Question Kayak or Canoe?

Recently Sarah and I have been talking about getting either a kayak or a canoe. There are obviously certain pros/cons to both, but I was curious what OT thought. I am leaning more towards a kayak, but having a canoe would make fishing a lot easier if we wanted to do that.

Here's a few models we've been looking at:

REI Necky Manitou II Kayak

LL Bean Malibu II XL Kayak

LL Bean Old Town Charles River Canoe

Anyone here have a kayak? Canoe or both? Suggestions? Comments?

TIA

I have both.

How good is she in a kayak? A canoe is easier to board and use for gear, I have found a kayak is a lot faster but tipping over in one can be a scary thing for a beginner.

Canoe. Because you can't rhyme "Peru" with "Kayak".

If you're going boating with your SO, it's nice to have two separate boats.

My sister calls canoes and tandem kayaks "divorce boats."

^^^ I'd suggest you each get a kayak.. It's much easier and you can each take one out if the other isn't around...

Many people don't paddle well together. If you want to get just one then I would suggest testing a 2 person kayak for a while to see if you like it and if it would work.

We'd prefer to have just one due to storage and the fact that hauling more than one boat with the wagon and all our gear just won't work.

Storage can be an issue -- we "garage" ours in the crawlspace under our house (and put a storage skirt over the cockpit).

I assume you have a WRX wagon? If so -- you shouldn't have any problem putting two rec kayaks (ours our 12 footers with pretty wide beams) on a roof rack w/ J-cradles. We used to haul the 2 boats and everything for a weekend (including our dog) in the saabaru. Plus - as Seph points out -- it's nice to have a solo boat one of you can take out on your own. Solo kayaks are much lighter than tandems and way lighter than any canoe (even Kevlar).

IF we decide on single kayaks... recommendations (cost then becomes a bigger factor)

Outrigger canoes are polynesian/hawaiian canoes. They have an outrigger/ama that stabilizes the boat. http://www.huki.com/store/ has examples but those are true racing ones. They come in one man and two man or 6 man which i'm sure you aren't looking for.

Very cool looking. I don't see us hitting the ocean a lot tho; at least, not at first.

Wilderness Systems - Pungo (100 (10 footer) or 120 (12 footer)).

Great all-around boat. You can get a Pungo 100 package (including paddle and PFD) for $700 brand new. If I did it over again though - I'd buy used -- then you could probably get a pair for under a grand.

I'd consider removable roof mounts, but I won't put OE rails back on

Also - if I were you - and planning to paddle locally in South Fla -- I'd get a sit-on-top kayak that you could also use in the ocean. SOT's are cheaper and lighter.

With the warm weather down there (and lack of whitewater) - there's not really a need for a closed-hull boat. (Unless you are planning for some long-range touring).

Thanks. Something to think about. We'd like to do some road trips up into the mountains tho, so a SOT might not be as versatile as we'd like.

Then a rec boat - like the Pungo - would be a great compromise. Get a spray skirt for colder and/or whitewater excursions and take it off when you're paddling in the warm waters of home. I've always wanted to paddle Florida Bay -- you'll have some great kayaking to choose from.

On the racks -- my saabaru also lacks a factory roof rack -- so I use Yakima Q-towers which are easily removable when you aren't hauling boats.

Great info, thanks! And on the racks, I just couldn't put OE back on the car after all the work I've done The Yakima line is cool too.
