I would call the dealership to check whether they have a sort of warranty on body rust. I know that major carmakers have 5, 10 years... so why not check.
And yes, wish you luck in fixing this!

To my earlier point, Subaru acknowledged the issue and agreed to fix it (however I have a call with them today to determine how it would be fixed). They probably did not want to go through the warranty (below) because they would be on the hook if they did a topical fix and did not either replace the door or do an invasive repair (pictured earlier in the thread).

Does anyone agree/disagree this would fall into rust perf. warranty below? My car is new enough that I'd be willing to take them to small claims court. It's ridiculous.

So the below is the Rust Perforation Limited Warranty:

RUST PERFORATION COVERAGE for all models is 5 years, regardless of mileage. Subject to the exclusions listed in this warranty, defective original body sheet metal panels that are rusted completely through from the inside out (perforated by corrosion) will be repaired or, at the option of SOA or your Authorized SUBARU Dealer, replaced without charge to you for labor and materials. The following items are not covered: (1) rusting of the outside of the underbody (floor pan) or any other part of the vehicle except body panels; (2) rust resulting from alteration of any body panels; (3) rust as a result of damage to paint caused by normal road hazards such as stones or other debris; (4) body panel rust caused by abuse, lack of maintenance, or damage to the vehicle; (5) rust caused by sand, mud, salt, submergence of a body panel in water, exposure to industrial fallout, chemical fallout, tree sap, hail, or other causes beyond the control of SOA; (6) replacement body sheet metal panels and (7) other items listed under "What is Not Covered" (later in this section).

Rust Perforation Coverage applies to perforation due to corrosion only. Perforation is a rust-through condition, such as an actual hole in a sheet metal panel. Cosmetic or surface corrosion, such as that caused by stone chips or scratches in the paint, is not covered under this warranty. In addition, SOA or your Authorized SUBARU Dealer reserves the right to decide whether painting the repaired or replaced panel to match the original finish is feasible. SOA will not, under any circumstances, pay for painting the entire vehicle solely to match paint color.
Since your vehicle was designed and built to resist corrosion, use of additional rust-inhibiting materials is not necessary and not a requirement for coverage under this warranty. Whether to obtain such additional protection is your decision.

Unhappy Same issue on my STI

Same issue on the driver's door of my 2010 STI. Now has one dime-sized rust bloom and 3 smaller ones moving up the pillar, so definitely rusting up from bottom.

Any thoughts on drilling a drain hole on the inside of the door, at the bottom where the inside and outside panels separate?

I think I'll try that and flood the cavity with rust stop, via the top hole that holds in the corner of the rubber door seal. Not ready to cut the rust out - looks beyond my bodyworking skills.

That is exactly what I did after welding the patch. I left a small hole on the bottom where the panels separate and injected some rustproofing in the cavity

I just injected two doses of 0.5 oz of rust stop into each front door, from the top corner hole. I'll see how much it slows down the rust.

Turns out, the door cavity does have a drain hole - the excess rust stop drained out the drain hole at the bottom of the rear edge of door.

Any updates from folks who have been pushing SOA/dealers? Seems like a fairly widespread issue.

This is definitely interesting. My '08 2.5i (that I bought in Nov '07) is showing zero signs of corrosion both inside and outside of the doors. Granted I didn't peel back the black tape. My car has been parked outside since day one but I also live in a dry climate.

So sad my '10 STi is doing the same thing on the passenger-side door, in that exact location.

Going to get some estimates soon.

I would not be surprised if this rust(ing) is being caused and/or accelerated by deicing agents that are being used during the winter months on road surfaces in place of rock-salt, sand and/or equivalent.

My 2011 STi is doing the same thing. Both front doors in exactly the same spot. Really irritating issue on a 6 year old car!

Default 2008+ Impreza/WRX/STI - B Pillar Rust

Just got mine fixed. IAG (local tuner shop in MD) body shop ground the rust out of driver's side and covered with epoxy filler, primed and re-applied black vinyl.

Body shop manager thought the rust was happening because the internal channel gets too tight to let factory rust protection to get in there.

Repair looks good

I guess I'll just wait and see how it holds up.

Looks great. How is it holding up?

Mine is getting worse, thinking about getting it repaired.

I still think that this can be attributed to winter deicers that are used.

None-the-less:

My 12 Impreza has it on both doors, you can’t see anything on the outside but the edge of the door has a little rust spot where there is a hole.

The rust warranty only covers perforations (holes) which this is not.

It’s like deja’vu. My ‘15 WRX built in May ‘14 is showing almost the exact same issues as my ‘08.

Wow Subaru, just wow.

I have the same problem driver side pillar, i can see rust bubbling on the outiside and the inside, telling me its cancer.

I think its cheaper just to replace the door shell? with a salvage door in good shape? like 250-300$

thoughts?
