Default how much hp out of a ea82T

Hello. I have a donor car, a 89' leone turbo wagon. The engine has been overheated. I was planning to rebuild it properly. But I am hoping to get some more juice out of it. It has a stock136 hp. Would it help, if I boost it up a little, and install an intercooler on it? How much would I gain, and what are the limits on stock parts?

Its a little different for you EDM guys. You got more HP right out of the box

We only got 115 for the 87+ EA82T

I am currently working on what will probably be my last EA82. Using a non turbo shortblock (higher compression), Intercooler, bigger injectors, extra pressure switched injector and a TD05 16G.

Should be fun. At least for a short time

are you going to build it with non-turbo block and turbo heads? The compression ratio stays the same? 9.0:1? That should kick ass. As I know, the turbo has 7.7:1? How much pressure should the standard injectors substand?
Well, for some time I intend to drive it with og 90 hp motor. then after the winter... the turbo goes in

What about the gearbox. Is it strong enough for the turbo engine? I have a 5 speed dual-range manual.

The main problem with building EA82Ts is the fact that A) the fuel system sucks and B) they have a problem staying cool under boost for long periods of time. First off, you'll want to upgrade to injectors for a Nissan 280ZX turbo since they are direct bolt in but are 100cc more then stock (185cc vs 285cc). Then add a fuel management setup like MegaSquirt or something similar that can be tuned. Throw in an upgraded fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator and voila, fuel system done. Next is keeping it cool. I thought about putting a small heater core inbetween the coolant outlet on the turbo and the inlet on the head but also had some ideas of just replumbing the coolant return all together but to where I don't know yet. Dual electric fans and a new 2 core radiator will also help in keeping it cool

You'll run into the risk of blowing headgaskets with lots of boost or blowing the ring lands off the pistons. Headgaskets can be helped by getting new OEM headbolts and torquing them a little more then stock. I torqued mine to 75 ft-lbs compared to 47 ft-lbs. Pistons will have to be made to help them from blowing apart, no way around that (unless you keep the boost down). Stock tranny will hold a bit of power so don't worry too much about it.

My setup I had (before I blew my third engine) was an SPFI shortblock, rebuilt gen 2 turbo heads, modified header for the TD04, obviously the TD04 turbo, AEM cold air intake, WRX top mount intercooler with Samco hoses, naturally aspirated XT spider intake with Nissan 280ZX turbo injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator at 40psi, Delta 260 street cams, Turbo XS BOV, Megan Racing 3" bellmouth downpipe, and a stage 2 clutch to hold the power, GReddy Profec 2 B-Spec electronic boost controller, GReddy Auto Turbo Timer, RX gearbox, rear LSD and a complete 5-lug conversion. This was all in my '89 RX. Its gone except for the tranny and 5-lug which is now in my SPFI coupe... Here are some pics of the build until I stripped it and sent to back to the junkyard...

Run an oil cooler, and build a better fuel system, intercool it, and run more boost. Then find a way to tune it. you'll have all the power you need.

EA82T is not capable of 'all the power I need' without thousands of dollars worth of work - and even then I'm not too sure.

It is capable of being a decently quick, fun little motor though.

I didn't say the most fastest, bestest EA-82t evAr, I mean I'm not will here... What I meant is what you said there. If you expect it to be more, than you need to find a different engine, or open your wallet, and bend over.

LOL

Well the way I see it is that even with little mods, it should be much better than stock 90 hp mpfi.
The original idea was to put the ea82t into a 76' VW bug... but hell, I like subies to much Currently waiting for snow to fall down,so the fun can begin...

Thats a nice looking wagon. I would be disappointed if you hacked it up for a VW.

Is that the factory paint?

If those pics show the wagon in its normal habitat, some 14 inch pugs with slightly larger tires could add many more hours of fun and enjoyment to your life

PS - beautiful scenery. Makes me homesick. I miss trees

Thanx! I bought it for 150€ (that's about 200$) and got another one. An 89' turbo wagon, with overheated engine - blown head gasket and missing co-passenger's side door.

Well, yeah its the factory paint, it only has got some minor rust issues and dents I have to take care of, otherwise the car is in good shape.

I was already lookin' for some bigger rims to fit this odd bolt pattern and all I've come across were pug rims. Here in Slovenia they are very rare and expencive, that is if you get lucky to find them. I already thought of crossdrilling a new bolt pattern, maybe 4 x 130mm for some empi 15' rims I can easily get from my bug dealer. Any suggestions on that subject? What is the recomended offset for my leone(or loyale as you USDM guys call it)?

P.S. the landscape here in Slovenia is really fantastic. Lots of forrest, hills, mountains, we have the coast of Adriatic sea, and beautiful green valleys. A small country though, only about 20,256 square kilometers and a population just short of 2 million.
This particual landscape is a hill called Slivnica (1100 meters above sea level). Its a beautiful view point. The famous Kras (Karst) country beneath, with the intermittent lake Cerknica. Especially now in autumn, the colors of the fallen leaves are breathtaking. It's getting quite cold here too... the snow is slowly headed our way. Me and my girlfriend like to drive around the country with our subarus. She has the 2004 impreza outback

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm watching you.

Flat4-SLO: more power means more money.

OTHERWISE...reliably...

12psi
WRX or STi TMIC thru a well thought out hood scoop and ducting
cone filter on the MAF (you'll need an adapter for that...should be easy to find at a 'go fast' shop)
some type of turbo-back exhaust system...2.5 inches (65mm) in diameter.
a header (or manifold as you may call it) would yeild a NICE gain. TechWorksENG has them. But they are not cheap. They also make downpipes that match perfectly with the header and the stock turbo.
Port the wastegate on the turbo, otherwise you'll have uncontrollable boost levels in higher RPM ranges.

I made 165hp/225tq to the wheels on a similar setup, but at 15psi. thats about 220hp/300tq at the crank. That engine is still alive (JWX's RX) today.

Stock transmission. it can handle some rough abuse at even those power levels.

Now, if I had an extra $6,000 laying around...I'd have a RELIABLE 300/300 to the wheels EA82.

Flat4-SLO, do you think it might be possible to get a set of the EA82 Leone headlights? I really would like a set since they differ from the ones here in North America...

Got one Leone thats preety much eaten up by rust, but all the mechanical parts are excellent. You can send me a private message, if u want.

Talking EA-82t power

Hello, just joined today. usmb having forum trouble idk? thought id add my 2cents so to speak.
1986 GL-10 = 775 us dollars
low milage ea-82t engine and d/r tranny= 500 us dollars

mods: t3 garret 60 turbo with audi s3 external wastegate mated to custom 2.25 headers manual boost controler and bov. spider intake, ported and polished with heads. stage 3 delta cams. fifth injector on pressure switch for above 13psi, only going to run to 15psi. lookin for medium-large intercooler options. front mount type.

problems: new engine not in car yet. stock ecu doesn't like the huge cams. oh and the added fuel and boost lol. so gotta tear it down and put stock cams in untill i can afford MEGASQUIRT. i plan on oil cooler and 2row with dual fans to combat the heat.

any ideas of how much power this could push at the wheels?
id like to see at least 180hp but i hear alot of skepticism about the heads and heating issues .

The heads are fatally flawed. Subaru got around 175 HP *at the crank* in race trim. 180 at the wheels is.... unrealistic I would say. The bottom end could handle it but the heads and head gaskets wouldn't - the gasket issue could be solved by having custom studs made and using copper gaskets or stock gaskets in conjunction with o-ringing the block.

There have been folks in the past that have cut the heads open to see exactly what the castings look like and the exhaust port wall thickness is disturbingly thin. This really limits the potential of the engine as it's not economically viable to mess with the EA82T when the EJ turbo's are so much more refined and capable of 300+ HP easily.

Ah, I see you bought Boostedballs engine. I thought about it, but decided it was to much trouble to get it to work.
