Wow, im all for saving money. The dealer does tend to oversell sometimes, BUT, MANY of the services recomended against in the opening post are good for your car. Just because it is not required does not mean it isint good for your car. You cant replace more than about 35% of your Automatic transmission fluid for example without doing a flush, it is trapped in your torque converter and cooler. SOA's commitment to you and your vehicle ends at 5-50, you may own that car longer. They arent gonna be on the hook for repairs that happen after the warranty is up.

Dont be so quick to dismiss an upsell from your technician just because it doesn't coincide with your "printed service interval" Find an honest mechanic and trust his(or her sometimes) advice.

You can pay a little now or alot later

A nice addition would be a basic list of what parts are covered/not covered under powertrain warranty. I know for a fact that knock sensors aren't covered under the powertrain warrenty.

Also, how long is emission equipment covered under warrenty? What is included under the "emission equipment" umbrella? (Yup, I'm one of the few around here still rocking a completely stock powertrain.) Thanks,

~~Quentin

Love to do that Quentin, but that list would be 90000 items long as each component has to be looked up in the computer with a Subaru service manager. I found out the battery isn't covered. Wiper blades and clutches are, but batteries....not so much.

Well Thomas....I just don't know what to say other than read the first post here very, very slowly, installation instructions are there. Where do you get ANY part for your car? When you think of that answer, call them or visit their website. There are probably 97,045 places to get replacement parts for our cars.....no one can possibly list them all.

Default Great Post.. one question

Hi thanks for that post. Newbie here in Anchorage, Alaska. It is great to have a website like this with so much info. I just recently bought a 2005 WRX STi. It has about 28000 miles on it and I am looking at bring it in for the 30000 service.

Everyone I talk to up here wants between $650.00 and $725.00 for the service. After looking at Subaru online they do not suggest changing out rear diff fluid or flushing clutch. I have been told by the dealership that they add this in because we are in an extreme weather state.

I do not want to skimp on service but I would love to save as much as I can so I can upgrade this puppy. Anyone have any advise on this?

Thank you

^^Yes, coolant is also antifreeze. (Technically the ethylene glycol or whatever is the antifreeze; when mixed with water it becomes coolant.)

Thumbs up

Now that it's time for my baby's 150 K maintenance, I've been spending a lot of time referring to the Maintenance FAQ thread. Money is very tight--we could never afford to buy this '01 2.5 Impreza in 2007, even at its '01 price--and we are having to do a lot of stuff ourselves. It's really great to know what to look out for both when DIY and when "dealing with a dealor". All your links & info are very helpful.

Thanks, Unabomber, for taking the time to put all of it together.

Default air cleaner vs air filter?

I'm pulling together the parts/fluids I need for my 60k service and had a question with the maintenance list provided at http://subaru.com/owners/schedules/s...2004myfed.html

Item 8 "Air cleaner element".

Is this the engine air filter or the cabin air filter (the one in the dash)? It doesn't seem to differentiate so I would assume it is the engine air filter which would be more critical to the car.

The maintenance schedule has no mention of the cabin filter for some reason, so it's referring to the regular engine air filter.

I suppose you can always just take a look at your cabin filter if it needs changing. It's just a couple of screws.

Thanks for the replies.

Note to self: Don't be lazy. Walk downstairs to the garage and RTFM. The manual refers to the air cleaner element and it is clearly the for the engine.

How bad is it, if the front diff is over-filled ?, about 2cm above the full mark when cold. ;-/

if this is bad, how do I remove 'some'

You cannot over-fill your front diff.
This is not the place for questions.
If you think you can over-fill your front diff, you have much research to do.

Question Visit your local NASIOC Chapter or Regional Area????

Hi Tom,
Helpful post except I'm sure what you meant by this. Visit as in physically or online. How, where? I can't seem to find any links on this forum to regional clubs.
I am a newbie and dealing with "My dealer wants OMG $$$ for my XX,000 service, what do I do?"
I want to find an alternate provider of this service.

- Thanks

I'm looking for info on where all the vacuum hoses go.
The sticker under the hood helped a little, but I can't figure out all the hoses. The '87 GL runs a little worse than it used to, & I have 4-5 pieces left over. My 4 books don't help too much either.
It suddenly stopped idling. I took the top off, sprayed everything (I'm glad I was wearing glasses.); it still wouldn't idle. I took the Hitachi off my other '87 GL (4 months newer), & didn't bother labeling the hoses.
Since it now runs about the same, I now think the EGR valve needs to be cleaned. Also, I wonder if I should put the original carb back on it. There are 6 fittings on the front & nothing to tell what they are.

My Sooby got stuck once last winter due to mice filling up the heater ducts so I couldn't see well enough.
I got a Buick A/C for summer driving, which is why I stopped work on the Subaru.

Id like to add this, the "how to drain the STi 6MT"

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=964993

took me a while to find it and its not listed in the main post.

drain gear oil from both A and B bolts, plug them , use the listed torque, then refill through the trany dipstick.

Now if I could only find the size of the rear diff top bolt

For a WRX rear diff, what do you think about using Subaru's 75w90 Extra-S? A group of us bought some and I may have enough left over to put in my rear diff.
