Was the ball socket too tight?
Also, when you grab the linkage arm that goes to the wiper motor, do you feel any play now? When you say "modify," how so? I'll probably look into this. Thanks for the update. Keep us informed. -Charles-

Charles,
The ball socket fit is good. The play is gone. Modify: The OD of the Jeep ball socket is too large for the hole in the Subaru long link. I had to trim the four "clips" on the socket OD and file a notch in the wiper link to install the Jeep socket. The real problem is that the Jeep socket presses into the long link from the opposite side of the Subaru socket. With the Subaru socket a socket failure will not let the long link fall off the wiper ball stud. The Jeep socket will let the long link fall off if the socket fails or comes out of the link. Been out of town since Monday so haven't used/tested my wipers since the repair. Roy |

wiper repair
Last update
I used the kit from Advance: Motormite 49447, as suggested by Roy (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...rtnumber=49447). Here's a pic of the bushing I used. All 3 will work, but I broke 2 out of 3 trying to make it fit. I finally got it to fit with the help of a friend holding the linkage arm while I took two channel locks and squeezed it in. Its a tight and safe fit. My wipers work like new again. Roy, I got this to fit without clipping the ears -Charles- |

Outstanding!!!
I love it when a plan works. But, I will never know how you managed to get the "clips" in without trimming them. Thanks, Roy |

Anyone have any updates to their fixes? I tried this fix but the ball kept popping out of the Jeep socket. So I went to a junkyard and got another arm for $5. Works perfectly and not a pain in the butt to replace.

I'm having similar problems with my 02 wrx wagon.
Anybody do a similar "mod" to their wrx wipers?? Also, the ones who changed out their bushings with the Motormite 49447. How are they holding up? dm |

I ended up just going to a junk yard and replacing the one troublesome arm for $5. I'm going to have to end up doing the same thing for my new Impreza soon.

so to confirm,
the bushing that seems to be wearing and needs replaced is in the wiper arm. So by removing the arms (take cover off and remove nut) I should be able to inspect the current play / condition of the bushings? dm |

Wiper Play
Remove the plastic shroud and grab a hold of the linkage arm where it connects to the wiper motor. You will more than likely break some of the plastic fasteners, but if you take your time, this can be avoided. If that bushing is worn, see my previous photos, you will have some slop or play when you wiggle the linkage arm. You do not have to remove the whole linkage from the car, just the arm that connects to wiper motor. There will be some various crevices and holes near the firewall and I stuffed some rags in the holes because you have to pop the arm off and the bushing will go flying. You can also take a piece of tape and tape it to the arm because the bushing and wiper linkage arm will come off together after you separate it from the wiper motor. The hardest part is attaching the arm to the motor and then popping the bushing back on, but it can be done.
My replacement bushing is still holding up quite well. No issues with the wipers. -Charles- |

Mine continues to work fine. But, I don't drive the car a lot since I retired.

Thanks, ImprezaVA and everyone else! My annoying A-pillar smacker is now taken care of! I avoided cutting the tabs on the Jeep bushing by heating it up with a heatgun, bending back the tabs 90deg, then heating again and pushing it in (with the help of some channel-lock pliers) from the back side. I finished with a zip-tie like ImprezaVA.
Lubed up the bushing with some grease and popped it on (with the help of the same channel-locks). Works great! |

A thousand thank you's to everyone posting a solution in this thread!
After being uber-pissed at the wiper for smacking my A-pillar night before last, I went to Advanced, got the parts and it's perfect now! I don't know how you did it, Beaverboy, I ruined a clip trying. I did have to trim the clips off, but I simply carved a little material out below where the clip attached to create an overhang for the zip-tie. Plenty of white lithium grease...perfecto! |

I just did this on my '03 WRX & the procedure is pretty much the same other than that you basically have to take the wiper mechanism out of the car (at least I did.) Two bolts and one nut hold it in, plus the wiring harness needs to be disconnected. Once you get the mechanism out the linkage in question is easy to get to and on mine the bushing on the end of the linkage connected to the motor basically fell off of the ball. I couldn't get the jeep bushing to fit without trimming the tabs & I'm not too sure the zip-tie is going to hold the bushing in the bar, but I seems to be doing fine so far. I'll post back if it fails...I wonder if on the '02+ Impreza's if we can order just the linkage with the bushings - hopefully Subaru has come up with an improved bushing.

This thread helped save the day.
I bought the help kit and some 5 min epoxy. I used a 3/16 deep socket to help get the clips out the hold the cowl down. Then took the wiper motor out. popped the ball joint off the middle wiper, the one attached to the motor just feel apart. I used a heat gun to soften the tabs on the new joint, I got 3 of 4 tabs to work. I then used a zip tie to hold everything in place. I also used a 2 part 5 min epoxy to build up the back side. Once dried I reinstalled everything. The pain was getting the new ball joint to snap onto the ball on the motor. I used a big and long set of needle nose pliers. I also installed it in a dry run off the car to make sure it all fit and used some white lithium grease in the ball joints. Once that clipped in, I tossed everything back together and all is good so far. If it starts to act up again I will buy a new piece. Thanks to this forum my problem is fixed, I used a Nissan wiper bushing from Napa though. Heat up the bushing, vice it in and done. I dont believe it will come apart as it's designed like the oem one...
Thanks all! Wayne |

I would love to tell you guys that I did this and it's working perfectly but I would be a big fat liar. I had to trim some of the OD clips to get them to fit and them ziptied them like the picture. I don't have a heat gun so I don't know what else I could do to make them easier to fit short of sticking them in my toaster oven for a few minutes. I got 5 perfect wipes before one of the all sockets popped out . It got dark on me so I'll try and fix it tomorrow.

As I recall, there's one little trick. Remove the rubber cover, and then then the nut completely. Make sure you lift the wiper up off of the glass while lifting the short, fixed section near the pivot point. Some wiggling combined with lifting/pulling straight out should do the trick, and if they've never been off before, they may be a little tight. Just watch that paint on the edge of the hood!
