Their are brown ones too, a lot of dealerships will recommend replacing both at the same time if one goes out and save the working one for a spare in case one goes out on the road

What does it matter? Why don't you read through the threads to see if they have had one. Since your car fire, you always seem to make posts inquiring about certain things to help your case or lack of a case. Maybe you should try the search feature. It might give you better results.

Why do you keep asking random questions in various threads?

Why do you need to know? Did YOU have one replaced? What relevance does it have to the issue with your car?

Random posting is not going to get you the answer you want. Lay all your cards on the table and we will see what we can help you with.

His 08 or 09 Impreza WRX STI caught fire after being parked for several hours.

I guess it was caused by an electrical fire.

Yes, I am aware of that. But posting multiple random questions in multiple forums is not going to get him his answer. Off the wall questions, I might add. He needs to keep his questions in the thread he started.

Actually, we are currently waiting on HIM to answer some of OUR questions so we can help him out.

ok i have a question for this sticky... my dealer service department specifically said no piggybacking, but after reading unabomber's engine management manifesto, i can see the difference between a piggyback and a custom tuned ECU. will SoA react the same way to both of these ECU alterations?

Default Engine wiring harness

Name:

Make: Subaru Impreza 2.5i 2008

Mileage: 7600

Time Out Of Use: 2 weeks

Problem And Likely Cause: multiple CELs - unknown cause

Modifications: none

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): yes

Reason Given For Denial: none

Your Story: Purchased new February 2009 (Worden-Martin, Savoy, IL). Early December 2009 first CEL. Service department cleared all codes to see if any returned. CEL returned late December 2009. Service department replaced crankshaft position sensor. February 11, 2010 CEL returned - cranked cold - felt like cylinder misfiring. Service department diagnosed as engine wiring harness. Replace harness (and manifold gaskets?). Picked up February 22, 2010. Cranked cold February 25, 2010 and CEL returned with a light overheated wiring odor in the interior.

Problem And Likely Cause: Car not starting

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Nothing wrong with car, car starts every time diag couldn't find a problem

Your Story : I have had the car for 2 years no problems what so ever. Then out of the blue one day the car would no longer start. Brought my car down to the dealership to fix the problem. They found that the clutch switch was the problem and i had a bad turbo waste gate solenoid. I go down to the dealership to pick up my car today and they charge me 52 dollars for a diag that they did not find any problems with my car and said that the car starts every time and did not replace the clutch switch. Why should i have to pay if my car is under warranty i bought the 7 year/70,00 mile warranty and yet had to pay to get my car back. Also states the check engine light was on which was not the case. Any solutions to how i can get this problem taken care of or thoughts of what I should try to fix this what appears to be a mistake in my warranty.

You should not have had to pay a dime since you are still under the 3yr/36K warrenty. I would call and speak to the service manager about it. As far as the car not starting, my clutch switch did the same thing and was intermittent. The dealer swapped it out and the problem was solved.

For starters, they should have informed you that there is a diagnosis charge to look at the vehicle in case it is not a warrantable issue. The techs have to be paid for their time and either Subaru pays them(repairs made under warranty) or the customer pays. Generally if we can't duplicate a concern we do not charge. That also depends on the issue and how much time we have invested. Either way the customer is informed of thise upfront and not on the back end.

Anytime a repair is attempted, they MUST duplicate the problem. If they don't and Subaru calls for that part back and find nothing wrong with it, then the dealer has some explaining to do and they get it charged back and could be in hot water if this has happened more than once.

Assuming that the car is stock, why would there be a diagnostic fee when the car is still under the 3yr/36k warrenty?

Again, somebody has to pay the technician for their time in looking at the car. They don't work for free. So either Subaru pays them if they make a repair under warranty because it was a manufacturer defect or the customer pays them(not covered).

I have seen brand new cars with as little as 700 miles have issues that were not covered by warranty because it was not a defect. Here are 2 case in points.

Customers car a 2009 Outback with 750ish miles would not stay running and die right after you start it. After days of diagnosis and wire tracing and immobilizer diagnosis, the culprit was a field mouse that chewed her air filter element and it was sucked up came in contact with the MAF. That is not a manufacturer defect but the dealership paid the techs instead of charging the customer being they just bought the car and I felt it wouldn't be right to charge the customer.

A customer had their 2007 Impreza with 16,000 miles come in because the a/c was not blowing cold air. Culprit was the Condenser had a puncture in it from a rock. Again not a manufacturer defect.

Both cases the cars were within warranty coverage and the techs had to be paid for their time to diagnosis the problem or make the repairs and SOA would not pay them because they were not warranty concerns.

Just because the car is within warranty does not always mean warranty covers everything. They only cover manufacturer defects.

Technician pulled codes and the crankshaft position sensor was the latest problem. Technician will call SOA to get help with diagnosis. Service manager will call me when/if there is a repair recommended by SOA. Thus far no denial of warranty, but no idea what the problem could be.

Hey local, I'm a student at UIUC, and I've been there a couple times. Personally I haven't had problems with them, but plenty of people here at the car club say they aren't that great. They don't even stock a lot of Subaru parts. They're really slow sometimes especially with Subarus. I hope it works out, but if it doesn't your best bet is a different dealer.

Thanks for the reply.

I have not had any problems with the car since the last "date" at the dealership. I suspect the last CEL light was due to the tech not clearing the codes, after the replacement of the engine wiring harness, as the final CEL code was only for the crankshaft position sensor. That was replaced in late December. Now it has improved performance. My speculation is, the vehicle was setting on the lot, and was probably a late 2008 production. The 2009s had already been on the lot for 4-5 months and the dealership was trying to move the 2008s. I was in a lease 2006 and didn't want to buy it. When they knew they were going to get it back, rather than me buying it out...

Fortunately, I bought the longest warranty package on this 2008 along with the car. I really posted to see if there were any other owners with the same problems. As for the dealership quality, I have them as a choice or the next closest dealer in Bloomington, IL. From what I have heard, it's a wash. And I live in C-U.

Quality might change as the owner has decided to put Subaru in the former Saturn facility to the south. He is also supposed to be getting more Subaru inventory (parts and vehicles) with an increase in sales and service that has recently happened.

Additional Information - Nothing has been done by the dealership technician(other than probably clearing the last crankshaft position sensor code) and the car is now running very well. No more CELs, no rough idle, etc. Thus far I am pleased with the results. I will post again if anything else occurs.

Time Out Of Use: Two days so far

Problem And Likely Cause: Engine stalls off throttle, rough idle, and low idle rev 400~500 rpm. WVU31 and/or Clogged throttle body

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes (agreed to pay for out of warranty service if problem is not covered/or related)

Reason Given For Denial: Clogged throttle body

Your Story: Took the car to the dealer to have WVU31 warranty service performed. When the vehicle was returned, engine was not idling properly, and stalls when shifted into neutral, off throttle, while vehicle is in motion. Was told by dealer my throttle body might be clogged, and is not a covered warranty repair. I agreed to pay for service to clear clogged throttle body if the diagnosis point it as the culprit. No service on throttle body was performed, as was deemed unnecessary. I am left uncertain whether the car is safe to operate. Reported the case to SOA, pending further advise.

Unfortunately, this is happening on some cars after having the recall performed. Subaru has issued a statement on how to 'fix' it:

Quote:
At times, you may encounter a rough idle condition following WVU-31 reprogramming. During the reprogramming process, learned memory is erased. As such, re-initialization of idle compensation will need to take place. Allowing the vehicle to idle for 5-10 minutes (depending upon ambient temperature and conditions) with air conditioner OFF will return idle stability to a satisfactory level. No other intervention is recommended
However, we have found that sometimes, even after doing this, it's not 100% perfect. After cleaning the throttle body, the car is as good as new.

Thanks, RexyGirl!

Car still idles a bit rough compared to pre-WVU31. However, engine stall seemed to have been tamed. I have 60K service coming up shortly, and will request to have the throttle body cleaned.
