Confirmed - V7 STI AC Compressor plug and play with USDM Bugeye
Did a ton of research to try and figure out definitively if the V7 STI AC compressor is completely plug and play with my 02 WRX. The answer is yes.
Both have the same 3 pin connector. The USDM compressor that was on mine had 2 pins shorted with a looped wire while the third wire goes to the AC clutch. JDM V7 connector has those same two pins going to a sensor on the back of the AC Compressor. I have seen this called a speed sensor, I have seen it called a temperature sensor, I am not sure of its function. My hope is that is is indeed an RPM sensor and it shuts the pump off at high RPMs, would make sense as the EJ207 revs so much higher than our EJ205s, and our AC compressors are only rated to 7000RPMs via the FSM. I doubt they are much different internally. It is also possible it is just to release the clutch if the compressor is going to stall. But regardless, the compressor works as intended without any re-pinning needed, truly plug and play. Hopefully this helps someone out who is looking for definitive answers, and if anyone knows exactly the function of the sensor at the rear of the compressor, it would be great to know. This information is useful because the JDM components are usually in excellent condition for people that need a new compressor, or even just a new clutch and pulley. I installed a brand new aftermarket pulley and clutch on mine and it died after 15 months, same as everyone else I have seen. The bearing fell apart and the bushings melted. It ended up destroying my compressor. In addition, if anyone is pushing more than 7000RPMs and wants a compressor that was designed to be on a higher revving motor, this will satisfy that. This can also work with GD Subarus with the single pin connector, your compressor connector will just need to be spliced onto the wire coming from the V7 compressor clutch. If there is indeed a high RPM shutoff, then this feature will not function in this scenario. I paid 100$ for the V7 compressor and it looks almost new.
