Default Car washes don’t remove salt

Did a test to see how well car washes remove salt from the underside of vehicles. And the results aren’t good. The sprayers on all of the car washes I tested were abysmal and only covered about 50% of the underside if that.

here’s a video I made with the go pro footage from underneath my car.

someone once told me not to clean a car at the car wash in the winter because they recycle the water, which is then full of salt

Great video.

I'm feeling fortunate to live in an area where the roads aren't salted and don't have to deal with the rust it causes.

A Touchless carwash is going to have a better under body spray than a brushed wash. Not sure the exact year, but older carwashes are also ‘grandfathered’ in on the recycle water stuff and don’t have to. It’s also generally just recycled into the pre soak and not much else.

Default Protect Your Car From Salt Damage

Salt damage to cars can be incredibly damaging if left alone, so it’s important to take steps to make sure your car isn't exposed to too much salt.

So read this to protect your car from salt damage.

Put her win Colorado most Karcher touch less washers have a good under carriage spray that goes while you drive over it

We live in a cold climate: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada....just wash the car yourself. If you know your undercarriage isn't getting the love it needs, get some jackstands or a lift and give er a good cleaning. But yes, most automated car wash stations do a crap job at best. I hand wash most of our vehicles and treat them to waxes, polishing, iron oxide treatment, etc.

Also, salt is corrosive when wet. Dry salt is not. So if you wash your car please make sure to really get it clean.

You're lucky to not use road salt there though. That's where I picked up my c63 and the underbody was minty fresh

This is actually surprisingly insightful. I always just assumed that that undercarriage wash would be enough!

I genuinely had no idea and always assumed that the undercarriage washes were somewhat decent. This puts it into perspective and I'll just jack the car up and give it a good hand scrubbing instead of throwing money away at these useless carwashes. Thanks for the video sir!

Don’t go to touchless washes. They all recycle water and the chemicals are horrible for your paint/plastics/rubber. Go to a manual DIY wash bay with the wand and use the rinse setting only. Confirm with the owner of the wash that they don’t recycle water. Check city permits if you’re OCD like me.

In spring, do a full detail along with oil undercoating.

I haven’t had any issues keeping cars on the road for 10+ years here in salt land.
