Scrap Pile Engine Build
My car has been sitting for a couple of years waiting for me to come up with the spare time and money to build her a new engine. I now have some spare time, but still lacking a little on the money.
The car is a 2001 2.5RS with a 2003 WRX merged wiring harness and ecu. It previously had an EJ207 in it, but thats been sold for a few years. I surveyed the spare parts pile and this is what I have. Is there a combination in here somewhere that would yeild a decent engine to get the car back on the road? 1. USDM EJ257 short block, complete, spun rod bearing 2. JDM EJ205 short block, complete, rod knock 3. JDM EJ205 AVCS heads, small port, complete 4. USDM EJ205 block, bare 5. USDM EJ205 heads, mismatched cam caps (could potentially bore and polish) 6. USDM EJ257, EJ205, and JDM EJ205 cams The possibilities that come to mind: 1. EJ257 with EJ205 heads hybrid. Assumes the EJ257 is still useable after machining. 2. EJ257 block, EJ205 crank, JDM EJ205 heads. I would need to buy the correct rods/pistons. Other than that, I am back to buying something else. Any ideas?

my option would #2. plus I'm hoping the jdm heads are AVCS that would be a blast to drive with the right turbo. so if they are AVCS make sure to get the ECU and appropriate wire harness.

Thanks. The JDM heads are single AVCS. I bought the engine thinking it was an EJ207. Thank goodness it was cheap. I might talk to the machine shop about oversized valves. Coupled with STI cams they might get back to 207 specs?

option #2
if you use the jdm avcs heads then you need to use a jdm savcs ecu to run them , you also must use the jdm intake cams as the position sensor and trigger on the cam if not compatible with any usdm cams or ecu , your old 207 had the same setup as the jdm 205 heads and if you had the avcs running w/ that you're golden i would use the usdm sti exhaust cams with these jdm intakes i would definitley have the chambers machined to 257 specs rather than use a hybrid piston , but thats me at the least , use the usdm sti springs but i would probably use some cheap bc singles or gsc beehives if not trying t make a bunch of power or use a large turbo the sti valves , specifically the exhaust , are pretty good , maybe back cut them , but it looks like you don't have any of them aftermarket valves should flow even more though no need for big valves with oem cams but if you're looking ahead............(p.s. i have some new ones- pm me if interested) use a 2mm longer rod , there are quite a few out there now (p.s. i have some new ones , same as above) any std pin height 255/257 piston but keep in mind the advertised compression ratio will be higher than actual c/r on a destroker , and they can handle a bit more c/r btw this will be like the 207 on steroids and it will still take money to make it happen here's the real question ------ what turbo , injectors and fuel type do you plan on running Last edited by motorbykemike; 05-03-2022 at 05:33 PM. |

I have STI pinks, modded WRX blues and some DW injectors (650s I think) in a drawer. Would probably need to send any of those out for cleaning/balancing. I would like to stay on pump gas. 91 Octane is the highest I have here. E85 is hard to find. |

It sounds like sending the JDM AVCS heads out for work is a good first step. Getting them cleaned up, opened up to EJ257 bore size and may look at larger valves.
I have the JDM AVCS cams, EJ257 cams so I should be able to run a mix of both if needed. The heads do have both mounting locations for cam sensors. One on the back of the pulley and the ones in the back of head. I think I ran the one closer to the pulley on my last motor using an 04 USDM STI ecu. I will pull both short blocks apart and see if either crank is useable. |

Pulled the JDM 205 apart and 4 spun rod bearings and #2 was basically a ghost. Crank, rods are trash. Case might be able to be saved, but the mains will need honing at the least. Will pull the EJ257 apart tomorrow and hope it looks better.

If you’re going to stay small turbo and pump gas may I suggest a bit supercars 16g or 18g
Quality stuff at reasonable price point |
