2019 WRX and STi get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto... BUT
Hello everyone,
So I noticed the 2019 WRX and STi will receive Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I wish the 2016 to 2018s would receive an update to access CarPlay but Subaru is definitely going to be using this as a selling point. However, I was doing research and I found that the Mustang did something similar where the 2017+ got CarPlay but the 2016 got shafted... but if you upgraded the USB hub, CarPlay magically worked. (This does work, we did it for my buddy’s mustang) I was wondering what you guys think? Will Subaru change actual hardware in the head unit to enable it in the 2019s only? Or will there be something dumb like changing the USB hub and upgrading software to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the 2016-2018s? I like the stock look of the head unit and this is something I would like to research much more. Reference video that it worked for the Mustang |

I sure hope there isn't anything this easy to make it work. I just bought all the goodies to rip out my stock stereo and put something in with CarPlay in my 18 :-p

I'm willing to guarantee this type of thing won't be possible. Based on photos of the interface and screen, the hardware and starlink software in the 2019 head unit is pretty much what's in the Outback... which is different from the 2015-2018 WRX/STI. Don't bet on Subaru providing that new starlink software as a firmware update -- would be nice though

I purchased the 2018 WRX Limited for the hopes that Subaru will make it an option to upgrade the firmware in the future with the 7" infotainment system.
I honestly don't even mind paying the dealer to upgrade the firmware and reflash it! It seems like this might just be a buying point for Subaru to fetch in people. |

Anyone that works at a dealership seeing a part number for the 2019 headunit with nav+HK yet? I know it's early, but I noticed on Subaru's parts site that some 2019 audio system diagrams/parts are showing up under 2018, but not the actual headunit(?). I'm just wondering if the dealership database is the same as the parts site, or if it's more up-to-date.

Going off of that evidence, I'm concluding that the 2019s will have a slightly different system but will use the same headunit as 2016+ cars. Hopefully Subaru will release a firmware update for at least 2016-2018 cars. |

The actual radio body diagram doesn’t really show what year is 19 specific. Just 2 units that cost the same, but for some reason have different part numbers. Again, I’m assuming the ‘19 unit isn’t being shown there... I guess we’ll have to wait until the actual 2019 section shows up on the site. It’s highly unlikely Subaru would have a firmware update for older units to update to the new starlink. Last edited by littledrummerboy; 06-25-2018 at 06:57 PM. |

^ Thanks for the info.
The Subaru parts site has been updated with a 2019 specific section since I posted that, and they're listing part 86471VA710 as what I think is the 2019 Nav+HK unit. I'm not sure how it differs from 86471VA610 you mentioned. Could you let him run that part number and see what he gets? When it comes to recognizing your car he might be referring to the telematics unit that is sort of the middle man in the US cars. Previous years had issues dealing with telematics if it was bypassed. I'm not sure if it requires a reflash though since I'm pretty sure the HU doesn't interface with anything else other than telematics. In Canada, we don't have that unit, thankfully. The USB thing though... that is something uncertain. It might be an issue for people with the single USB module that came with the base 6.2". I'd like to think the dual module that came with the Nav+HK HU would be the same? I'm not sure about the over-the-air updates either, but my guess is it should just be built into the HU as long as its wifi. I wish we could get a pic of the back side of the 2019 HU and compare. It could go a long way to figuring this out before shelling out the money. |

So I just joined the Subbie family a few weeks ago. 2018 Sti. I made an appointment for this past Saturday because it's really my only complaint with the car, and I was hoping they would be able to flash a new firmware and fix the problem. The Service Department told me that the 2018's weren't able to use mirrorlink because of some big legal battle and that all the North American cars had to have it disabled. The tech said that the 2019's will have it enabled, but the 2018's compatible with the new HU's. =\ Major bummer. I was really thinking about ringing up SOA to see if there is anything that can be done to fix it without putting in an aftermarket HU. I'm pretty pissed about it tbh. It's ridiculous that I bought a 2018 car that I can't use navigation on and can't charge my phone properly. They need to fix this at no cost to customers.

I hear you though, who knew Subaru would actually have this many different infotainment units for one generation? It’s uncharacteristic of them to change hardware the way they have. Last edited by littledrummerboy; 08-15-2018 at 09:36 PM. |

Maybe they gave me the wrong part number since it kind of doesn't make sense for the new part number to be lower than the old. Also, Canada may have different part numbers or use different parts all together. You mentioned that you don't have telematic units and we do in the US. Sorry haven't showed your part number to the part guy. But appreciate the reply. Hoping that someone out there is bold enough (and with enough cash ) to try this and prove to all of us that it can or can't be done.

My issue with Android Auto is that the ones which work by requiring a USB connection to the phone (just this year they're starting to come out with aftermarket HUs that can connect to Android 8.0 phones and better via wi-fi) do NOT supply enough current. Most phones out there these days require about 2.1A or more to properly charge (3.0A or more for rapid charging). AA headunits provide at most about 1.5A for charging through the USB cable. That means your phone will be discharging AND charging at the same time if you have a smart phone bought in the last 2 years or so.
Going to have to go aftermarket, for example, if you're using a Google Pixel, or be willing to splice a 12V car charger into the power lines for the AA HU's USB cable. |

I emailed SOA last month and was told it's not possible to update the 2018 head unit to Apple CarPlay. I bought my WRX in April. Wish I had waited a few more months. I just assumed that since other Subaru's had CarPlay that they were never going to put it in the WRX. The same thing happened when I bought my 2015 Mustang. The next years model had CarPlay as a usb upgrade option for I believe $50 at the dealer. I hate the thought of spending money on a new head unit just for CarPlay, since I just paid $35000 for the car. And I'm going in for $1,500 for ceramic coating next month.

I'm don't mind the look of the new 2019 radio, but what phd12v said it would be interesting to see if the 2019 radio works for a 2018. I would like to have android auto.
