FWIW the good E85 pumps in MN have E85 over 80%. Xluben posted a photo of 83-84% reading on his accessport. IMO you gotta find the right stations.

I have to drive into Vegas to get my E85 so I buy 50-100 gallons at a time and keep it in my shed. When I buy it it tests about 80-85% but after sitting in my shed for 6 months it's now 90%. So for some reason the gasoline is evaporating and the ethanol is staying behind. (best guess) I'm storing the fuel in High-density polyethylene jerry cans. (https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail...Gallon-Natural) I've tested this for 3 years now and it's always the same results. I also use the stabil for ethanol fuel stabilizer if that has any effect I don't know. Next time I'll test before and after mixing.

I like the jugs cause they can stack 3 even 4 high when full. :-)

This got me curious about how FlexFuel sensors actually work. This is what I found...

Typical sensors used for FlexFuel setups determine ethanol concentration by measuring the relative permittivity of what's flowing through the sensor. Gasoline has a lower relative permittivity then ethanol. Water has a higher relative permittivity then ethanol. Keep in mind ethanol is hydrophilic (water loving), so it will absorb water vapor in the air over time.

What's most likely happening in your case; the E85 is slowly absorbing water vapor in the air, which will cause a FlexFuel sensor to read higher concentrations of ethanol then actual. The Stabil may also be throwing off the readings. You could test the later by running E85 through a FlexFuel sensor without Stabil, adding some Stabil to your tank and then seeing what the sensor shows after driving around for a bit to mix it in the fuel. See the below links for more info:

actually I'm not using a sensor. I'm using the Quick Fuel Test Tube

https://www.amazon.com/Quick-Fuel-Te.../dp/B007ZJ749O

I definitely will test next time before and after stabil.

But I doubt it's much water being absorbed. I live in a very dry area of So. Nevada, typical humidity is single digits. The fuel is kept in the HDPE containers tight, and they are in a vented shed. Not saying impossible, but if it is, I can't imagine it being much.

I have a theory on this, I actually asked Bisimoto about this once on one of his life chat things and he didnt understand the question I dont think.

First to understand my theory you gotta understand that a GM ethanol sensor is actually just a ohm meter. It test the resistance of the fuel at certain temps, that is why it also has a temp gauge built into it. It knows the conductivity (ability for electricity to pass through it) for both fuels. Gasoline is pretty much di-electric, electricity can barely pass through it. Ethanol, allows a little more flow but still not enough to go shorting out your fuel pump and making you explode.

Second, you need to remember that alcohol is VERY hydroscopic, it absorbs water. WATER lets electricity flow right on through it. As ethanol sits it absorbs the water in the air and as it absorbs water, I believe that throws off the conductivity reading of the sensor.

My fuel tank is pretty vented, i have no evap or anything. I can fill up today with e75 and in a week it will be reading closer to e80 with Pittsburgh humidity

The quick fuel tube is a great no nonsense device that takes water absorption out of the equation. I was using one back when E85 started being readily available in MI (2008). Such a PIA to use compared to just watching a gauge though.... Using a Zietronix now and tuning for flex fuel. Unfortunately the days of year-round E85 in MI are over. Seasonal blend I'm getting E75.... Hunted around for any hold out stations that may still run E85 all year, haven't found a single one (Detroit area).

I would say it's probably a little of both. If the gasoline vapor can evaporate out, then it's getting out of the can. And, if gasoline vapor can get out, then air can get back in if the air gets cooler. It might be "dry" air, but it still contains some water vapor.

Recently fixed a worn wastegate actuator and injector leak. Pretty happy with the results, but wish there was more top end. Any suggestion on how to get up to 350-400hp? Thinking turbo, headstuds and decat?

Also, I've noticed the car is very hard to restart once warmed up. It'll spit fuel out the exhaust while cranking, then fire up after a few tries while holding throttle open 50%. Cold starts are fine.

Definitely a bigger turbo. Something GT30 sized would be good.
A fmic would help too.

Starting my closed deck on my 15 STI. Hoping for over 400 when done. I have the full cobb flex kit with 1050x's, Cobb FMIC, full Invidia Exhaust, TiAL EWG, and will have the Cobb 20g. We'll see in the coming months what she puts down.

Default E85 in the plans

I am in a different game than the posts I read here, but I am working on a Subaru project that I will be running E85, or at least whatever the pumps give me. Not a drag racer or street racer, but a sandcar. No high dollar motor, but a stock 2.5 n/a with added turbo. Still working on the conversion, so no numbers yet. The Corona virus has shut my tuner/dyno guy's business down until this stuff clears up. Major set back.

2015 WRX. Full bolt-ons / built motor.

Shortblock by Casey at Herbert Performance
Engine build and tune by Clinton at Shifted Performance

Car made about 390whp with 400tq at 4600' elevation at e80 final count.
Likely sending the turbo to SoCal Porting in a couple months.

Just a random question here but do you guys running E keep it on E year around? When it gets cooler here its such a pita on the cold start. Point of reference I'm running Id2ks, stage 2 cams, an AMS manifold(no TGVs), and speed density tune.

You need to adjust cold temp enrichment. My car back in SC runs E all year round and fires right up.

Default Question

So, I’ve been searching for a while and really haven’t seen any answers but I was wondering if there is any advantage to the Cobb fuel pressure sensor for E85 other than being able to watch fuel pressure on the AP. I’m already protuned and was planning on upping my car to flex fuel. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

If enabled, it can actually save your engine should fuel pressure decrease during boost. Fuel pressure should be base + boost and when tuned, if it varies from that it will add fuel through injector duty cycle to maintain the same afr. A failing fuel pump, marginal fuel system for your power level, overheating the pump, bad regulator, or vac line coming off the regulator can all cause fuel pressure to drop.

you might as well save money for standalone like link, because cobb app with cobb flex fuel kit is almost a price of standalone. And yes fuel pressure comp is very important, id say that should be your first upgrade!

Thanks for the replies guys. I already have regulator, pump, injectors, and basically went with the stage 3 setup but went protune with that. After seeing my numbers and what the car can do, I decided to go flex now.
