Default Passport 8500 installation question

All,

I really really appreciate all the help I've been getting from here. It has helped me make numerous decisions in little time.

My question this time is that I've read information on being able to by an adapter and install the Valentine 1 directly into the rear-view mirror, is this same option available for the Passport 8500 and what do I need to do to get all of these pieces if so?

Thanks!

Probably the best thing to do is sell it and get a V1.

Well I have not bought one yet, but every reputable source that does not have personal backing by the company itself has shown the Passport 8500 to be superior in distance and in filtering out noise. But if someone can give me clear objections, maybe I'll go with the Valentine 1.

I'm fairly certain that the V1 display in the rear view mirror is actually aftermarket.....meaning its not available from V1....there's a 3rd party that does it for BMW and.....a couple other cars, but definitely not Subaru. If there's any chance of a custom install, you might want to check with the 3rd party vendor here:

I have the adaptor for my passport and have it installed permently. I got it locally for $25. I installed the "head" for remote slot next to the IC sprayer switch, ran the wire up the A pillar and under the head liner. Then through the auto dimming mirror plastic wire guide. I have my passport right above my autodimming mirror. PM me your e-mail and I'll send pics.

Default V1

Does anyone have pictures of their V1 installation. And information on the procedure involved with this one? Still trying to make a decision between the two.

Thanks!

If you do a search on the V1, you'll find several threads on it. Personally, I found the 8500 to be wonderful. I used the remote head for it (with the mute and LEDs on it) and mounted the unit on my windshield. However, it got stolen so I bought the SR7 with remote sensors instead.

I've owned both the V1 and 8500. Both are excellent units. I've kept the V1 mainly due to the arrows and superior windshield mount...

Onto the install a radar install is a radar install. All you need to do is find a 12v ignition and a ground. Whatever directions you see for the V1 you can use for the 8500...

When I had my 8500 in my rex I had the unit in the middle of the windshield and the remote display on the steering column. Now I have my V1 above the mirror, remote display in the spot, and the remote volume mounted in place of the ashtray...

Like it's been said above, all you need is a 12V source and a (good) ground, so the auto-dimning mirror power source should suffice nicely for either unit.

I have the 8500 myself and love it. I have it hooked up to the escort zr3 laser shifter, and it's pretty damn sweet. I have the power for the zr3 tapped off the cig lighter, and run the power from the passenger side foot area (where the zr3 control unit is located) up the A pillar tucked in and out of sight. I have the mute button located on the button blank in the center console next to the mirror adjuster (DCCD switch on an STi) so it's right by the shifter, a quick tap for mute or double tap for laser shift/jam disable. These units work rather well together too (laser jamming verified 3 times now :-)

When I saw that option for the V1 on BMWs, I emailed the company who makes it - they said:

"Thanks for your interest in our mirror. The mirror should work with you
car. You would probably need a different windshield mount as I am not sure
how your current one configured. The mount (96-99 BMW M3) could be
purchased at any BMW dealer and replace your existing windshield mount.
Let us know if you have any other questions."

So, it looks like if we buy the BMW mount their mirror will work...

I do wonder, though, how great a benefit the integrated display/mirror would be; despite locating the display discretely in the mirror, wouldn't the unit itself need to be mounted to the windshield? If so, wouldn't its display be in practically the same location as the integrated mirror already?

Only if we could remote mount the detector unit itself, that would be awesome (though less effective, according to Mr. Valantine).

Can anyone tell me what pins to use when connecting the 8500 to the power/ground in the map lights? I don't have the original wires and I'm just using a regular phone cord. Does anyone have the wiring schematic for the escort 8500 so I can hard-wire it?

Thanks,

~JB

They sell a hard wire kit that will let you tap in to the rearview's power wire.. but nothing to actually intergrate INTO the mirror itself.

Here's mine:

Removed the center visor.. removed the suption cups off the windshield mount for the detector and screwed it in where the visor was.

I also have the remote mute/led mounted similarly to liigod's setup.. except.. err.. cleaner and flush with the console. Most likely cause of different sized switches/blanks between cars.

How did you get the remote mute/led to work if the detector is plugged in up at the rear view mirror? I mean how does it communicate with the 8500?? Also how did you get a flush setup, because that adaptor they gave is big and meant to go in the cig lighter....are there pieces I can order that I'm not aware of here? Or did you do it with everything that comes with the 8500??

That's what I wired it with.

Ok maybe it's not exactly *flush*.. but it sits in the blank next to the cruise control switch a lot deeper than the other picture showed.
