News Subaru Of America, Inc. Reports July Sales (2020)

  • Forester sales up 4 percent in July

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 51,458 vehicle sales for July 2020, a 20 percent decrease compared with record July 2019. These results reflect the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding economic recovery. Following eleven consecutive years of sales records, Subaru reported year-to-date sales of 318,572, a 21 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2019.

July marked the third consecutive month of 50,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. As the top performing carline by volume, Forester sales increased 4 percent in July 2020 compared with the same month a year ago. WRX/STI posted a 6 percent increase, while BRZ posted a nearly 60 percent increase compared to July 2019.

“Given our low supply of key models such as Forester, Outback, Crosstrek and Ascent, overall, we were extremely pleased with our sales results which were delivered by our retailers, who are also persevering through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Our retailers’ proven commitment to caring for and retaining our owners was reaffirmed in July when J.D. Power awarded Subaru with the Best Brand Loyalty in the automotive industry for the second consecutive year.”

“We are pleased with the results and the stellar efforts of our retailers given the inventory available for July,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “Our manufacturing facilities are now fully ramped up and the delivery of Subaru vehicles to our retailers will significantly improve in August so we can better support the demand from our customers.”

WRX, STi and BRZ sales up. Good. Shows Subaru to continue with the new models of each.

I wonder if Sportscar sales in general are holding up OK during the pandemic. Even Porsche is doing OK overall. We saw these numbers were both good last month too...

Might be a few reasons:

End of the world purchase "World is going to ****, better buy this before its too late"

Racing events are still active in a lot of areas because its easy to social distance as opposed to other activities.

People aren't spending money on travel and other things, so they might spend it on Sportscars they've always wanted instead (all the performance shops and vendors I know are doing crazy business right now).

Sportscars don't seem to be depreciating as much, and collector cars are doing OK still monetarily, so might make more sense financially?

I'm curious if the announcement that BRZ production has ended prompted people to go and get the "last" one. Contributing to the "big" increase. That was the reason I got my Baja. I found out they had stopped production.

It's possible, and dealers offering 0 APR and summer time & boredom also plays a role, I suppose.

Nothing really surprising outside of Outback sales taking a big hit. Is this an availability thing?

This. A little surprised about the WRX/STI increases but happy to see it anyway.

Simple, Fed printing benefits the top 1% by a huge margin, and the top 10% by a good margin. The top 1% buy Porsches and the top 10% buy things like WRXs and sub $60k sports cars, new trucks etc.

The bottom 90% is getting screwed by the lockdowns and doesn't benefit from Fed printing, but they don't buy as many new cars.

Where? Outbacks are in plenty of supply here in Portland and they are being discounted. If dealers across the country are facing shortages of supply from Indiana, why offer discounts if you're a dealer with high supply? Sell them to other dealers where demand is high. Demand must not be high.

I guess you weren't paying attention last month. The plant was shutdown for over a month during lockdown and opened back up to reduced capacity. There's 150,000 vehicles of lost production between both plants with the heaviest impact being Lafayette. Cars.com shows ~7k Outback in dealer inventories. You're not selling 18,000 Outbacks in a month with on the ground inventories that low. I suspect Subaru will get inventories in line in the next few months, but the drop in Outback sales is directly related to production. I imagine you'll see some pressure on Forester soon as well as the production timing offset of vehicles coming from Japan should be setting in right about now.

So there should be ZERO inventory.

Why are you so bad at trying to make points? Production stopped, but there were cars produced already in various stages of transit. Car sales stopped in some places and not in others. Factory started producing again, but at reduced levels. Sales picked back up significantly from prior levels. All of this adds up to reduced inventory, not no inventory. I guess business isn't your forte.

Edit: By the end of this month inventory should be depleted. I misunderstood when the shortage of supply occurred.

Shouldn't be the case either. We were told that this month's allocation will be more. Now, I can't remember if it was this month or next, but allocation should be double.
