Update #9
We installed the engine a couple of weeks back, and I've spent the last couple of weeks finishing up the wiring, fluids, intake, and AOS. I picked up a Grimmspeed AOS for $50 from a local guy. $20 in 1/2 fuel hose and we are all set. I know this AOS gets some flack for how its mounted to the oil filler, but for $70 I'm happy. I'm not 100% happy with the location of the air intake and will probably relocate it depending on intake temps. Only thing left is the tune and I'll be back on the road! SJ

Update #10
Well I've managed to get a lot done on the WRX! Car runs great and I haven't experienced any issues to date. We completed the Brembo swap this past weekend. I know this is a popular swap, but man, the difference is night and day. I do have some rubbing from the DNA rotors in the rear that I need to sort out. We also installed all new SS brake lines and Stoptech pads. I've also been working on the shifter assembly. My car is experiencing the shifter wobble while in gear issue. I bought the new assembly from fastwrx. I also upgraded the shifter bushings with a Kartboy set. Last big update is a full STi interior swap. I have always loved the blue STi seats and managed to pick up a full 2007 interior for only $600! SJ |

I participated in my first ever track day this past weekend! I had a blast and learned a lot about the car. The Oklahoma Subaru Group help their annual Subie meet at Hallet Motor Racing Circuit in Jennings, OK. I have to give a huge shout out to them for putting this on!
I'm very happy with the car, especially with it having a 146k miles on the engine and chassis. I'm actually surprised I didnt have any issues! Overall I'm happy with its performance on the track, but do know I have a lot of suspension work, and driver experience, ahead of me. Stay tuned! |

Great work so far
Some suspension advice if you haven't gotten your coilovers yet.. Depending on your budget.. I would highly recommend do bushings in the control arms/lateral links/subframe/rear diff.. It makes a HUGE difference on how the car responds and will be able to utilize the adjustment of your coils. Sway bars are a HUGE must for the track. I personally would recommend Whiteline Adj front and rear that will help dial in your suspension more to your liking and driving style. ADJUSTMENT is key.. Swaybars/coilovers/Camberplates etc.. the More Adjustment the better. Now for coils.. you mentioned FA...not a bad way to go.. but there are better for about the same money.. Dual Adjustment , Rebound/compression adds to that Adjustability I was talking about. The key to suspension is to get the most out of it...that suites your driving to make the car feel like 'YOU' want it. Comfort at this point is kinda out the window.. Hope that helps |

I appreciate the advice. I noticed almost immediately that I need some bigger sway bars. They would have helped tremendously. I had FA's on my 2011 WRX. I enjoyed them but never had the chance to track that car. What brands are you referring to? I'm open to suggestions. SJ |

- Megan Racing D/A $$ - FA $$ - Koni D/A Struts with Race Comp Springs *non height adjustable $$$ - KW Varient 2 $$$ - KW Varient 2 from Race Comp $$$ - Ohlins Road & Track $$$$ - MCS $$$$ All these manufacturers produce a quality 2 way or more adjustable setup Big thing is that you can put whatever spring rate you want on them.. most run a Square setup Ex: 500 frt 500 rear.. The Swaybars will help along with some quality endlinks..I recommend Kartboy. Your model of WRX is fortunate that when you slam the camber it will automatically toe the front out for better turn in.. As I tell my Novices that have fancy stuff.. Don't be afraid to TWIST THE KNOBS AND TURN THE BUTTONS... Things you want to add to your Track Day prep: Bring a Jack to be able to jack the front corner of the car up to set the camber on the front camber plates.. When you get your alignment. Tell them you want a reading for normal driving..EX: 0 toe. 1.5 neg front.. then a reading for when you slam the camber. EX 1/4 toe out 3.3 Neg Camber that way you will learn the various ranges to help facilitate tire wear and general felling of the car.. its going to be a bit 'darty' with the toe out.. but you learn to enjoy that for the future because it helps your 'turnin'.. If you need more info don't hesitate to reach out. the biggest thing is to learn the limits and have fun ..Hope that helps Bill |

Update #11:
Finally got around to installing the A/C system. The car was missing the condensor and lower A/C line that runs along the firewall. I purchased a new condensor from RockAuto and a grabbed a used line off a 2005 STI. The system charged up with no leaks! I ordered a full Whiteline sway bar kit with end links, and a set of Megan Racing SPEC-RS coilovers. Everything has been delayed due to the virus. I'm hoping to have them in within the next couple of weeks. SJ |

I installed the Bayson R Lip and Splitter kit from eBay last night. Overall, I'm happy with the quality of the plastic for the price. Both kits came with their own hardware; the clips are junk but luckily I had a full assortment on hand.
I'm thinking of leaving the splitters black. What do you guys think? |

Thanks, Bill! Well, it doesn't look like I'll be installing the coilovers anytime soon. They're on backorder for 3-4 months...

I would start learning how to set the suspension up once you get it installed.. One thing right off the bat.. Swap the springs from Front To rear and rear to front, when you get these so the higher rates are in the back.. Adj the front bar to full stiff and rear bar to Full Stiff right away.. .. Lots of You tube videos on how to Adj Compression and Rebound suspensions.. I have a coulple of lists for you.. Send me your Email add in a PM.. Bill |

Update #12
I hope everyone is doing well! I've made some progress on the WRX over the past couple of weeks. The first thing to tackle was a bent rear lateral link. Specifically, the passenger side toe arm. I looked and looked and could not find an OEM replacement arm that didn't cost an arm and a leg. So I decided to pick up a set of aluminum STi links. I also picked up all new hardware for the install. I was pretty lucky when it came to removing the long bolt that goes through the hub. Laterla link bolt? I only had to cut the driver side one, but it wasn't that bad. Overall, I'm very happy with the STi links. One thing you should consider before you install the STi links. You will need a STi sway bar and endlinks. The STi sway bar is wider than the WRX one to compensated for the longer lateral links. I opted for the Whiteline STi sway bar and end links. Lastly, I installed a COBB axle back to quiet down the exhaust a bit. Yes, I know. It's supposed to loud, it's a weekend track car. But, the older I get the more I want a mature exhaust tone. The cannon exhaust sounded great, but it shaked walls. SJ |

Update #13
Well, it's been awhile since my last update. My wife and I had our first child back in January, a little girl, and I've been sourcing parts. Who knew a global pandemic would slow down the aftermarket parts world... I officially cancelled my Megan Racing order last week. The coilovers never came in and I got impatient. I was able to pick up a set of brand new Fortune Auto 500 NSG editions with Swift springs here locally. I've managed to get the fronts installed as of this posting. I've also been working on repairing the driver side inner fender. The previous owner must have had a small fender bender, which crumpled the battery tray and inner sheet metal (See pictures). I was able to source a new panel, headlight bezel, and radiator support bar from Subaru. The install was pretty easy and only required drilling out the spot welds and then mig welding the new pieces back. I'm happy with the outcome. I'm also picking up a 2016 STi shortblock with D25 heads this week. I'll leave that for another time. Thanks, SJ |

Hello Everyone!
I didn't plan on being gone this long but a lot of progress has been made on the WRX. I have an ej257 going in the car with D25 heads. IAG AOS, and some other goodies to help the car on the track. I hope to have some pictures for you soon. Thank you, SJ |

Update #14
Well, a lot has happened since my last update. The hood has been painted to match the rest of the car, we had another successful track day at Hallet before the season ended, and a new engine is going in the car. The EJ205 has proven to be a reliable and robust engine for the couple of track days I've attended, but it does have over 140,000 miles and is getting tired. I decided to retire the old engine and put a fresh EJ257 in the WRX. I found a low mileage EJ257. The short block is from a 2016 STI, and the heads are D25s from a 2008-2010 WRX that have been completely rebuilt. All this is held together with ARP head studs. We have opted for the Moroso Oil pick-up and factory oil pan for now. I recently picked up an IAG AOS for oil consumption. The EJ257 swap has been pretty easy so far. We will be using the factory EJ205 camshaft position sensor so the engine can run on the factory ecu. This does mean we will forfeit AVCS for now, but I plan to add a stand-alone ECU in the future. Well, that's all for now. Thanks, SJ Last edited by Bugeye115; 12-15-2021 at 09:11 AM. |
