OnGrid Season 2 Round 1 @ SPA!

Heat #1 -
Heat #2 -

Heat 1 -

Qualified 4th, and while on grid told Gary? about my terrible starts. With this knowledge he jumped me on the lights, and immediately went to my outside. Burke is on my inside as we drive hard into T1. Somehow I managed to hold 4th going down the front straight. Immediately Kevin popups in my rear view, and I'm flashing back to Season 1. He so graciously give me a little bump, and my car immediately lurches forward narrowing the gap to the leader pack. I find myself back in the mix going into T6, just in time to watch Davis and newcomer, Barker, battling it out for P1. The two of them touch in T10, which forces Barker wide on exit. These two go side by side for the next corner and keep it super clean. Coming out of T11, I'm right on #29 (sorry don't know who this is, a lot of new names for S2). As we enter T12, green goes wide, so I start to tuck in down to the inside curbing. Just as I do this, I see Barker touch the inside curb, and start to get loose. He tries to catch it, bouncing of #29 once, but can't catch it without hitting #29 again. This send them both way off the track, and leaves me sitting in P2 right behind Davis.
With half the lap gone, S1 drivers hold the top 3 positions: Davis, Me, and Burke. Lap 2 starts, and Davis gets to work and I settle in trying to keep up. Burke finds himself in a battle with Gary, which lets Davis and I pull away a bit. I think at the end of lap 2, Burke and Gary make contact, which lets Davis and I extend the gap further and that's all she wrote for the remainder of the race.

Heat 2 -

Reverse Grid!!! T1, amazingly clean. Not one incident. But coming out of T1, it looks like some of the guys way up front made contact. This sends a few cars spinning around the track as the rear of the grid makes it through T1. Burke executes a crazy inside dodge around recovering car, only to have a car fly right infront of him and hit the inside wall, which he expertly dodges too! Talk about eyes up!!! Before I have a chance to truly admire Burke's driving, I look up to see cars going 4 wide? 5 wide? down the front straight. Literally cars stuff in from one side of the track to the other. This doesn't end well, and sends a bunch of cars spinning, and bouncing of walls. Bruke comes out the other side of the carnage, I'm right behind him, and Davis right behind me. All three of us celebrating our luck. As we head up Raidillon, I close the gap tightly to Burke bumper. Time to return the favor from Heat 1, bump! Bruke's car flys forward and he closes the gap on Miller. Unfortunately, as Burke trys to go left on Miller, they barely touch and it doesn't end well. I see the both of them heading to the outside wall, and I try to drive to the inside. However, both their rears get loose and the next thing I see is Miller and Burke, perpendicular to the track, coming right back across in front of me. At the last second, I slam on the brakes, just as Burke clears the front of my car. I'm not sure if I t-boned him or just barely missed his car.
Between losing Burke and Miller and my celebrating having survived a wild 6 corners, I totally forget to down shift after slowing down and Davis goes right past me. As I enter T12, right behind Davis, I get loose but manage to keep it on line without losing too much speed. I catch up the next pack of cars, just in time to see a car bolt from the inside to the outside of the track and take someone out at the entrance of T13. Reyes, Barker, Me, then Davis make it past the incident (which Davis almost didn't make it through). As we go into T13, Reyes runs wide and Barker sets him up for the pass coming out of T14. With Barker on the outside, Reyes is forced to take the inside line going into T15, he gets the car up on the curbing, which causes his rear end to come out. This lets Barker, me and Davis get by.
At the end of lap one, Barker goes to woooooork. By T1 he is gone and by T7 he has passed the 2 cars. Going into T10, I accidentally touch the inside curb, which gets me super loose. I know Davis and Wong are behind me, and promptly tell them on comms to go to the inside and pass as I try to collect the car without losing to much speed. As I enter the back high speed section of the track, a car starts to try to unknowingly pinch Wong off the track. Wong passes Davis, and this mysterious car almost does the exact same thing to Davis. I then almost take out Davis coming out of T20 as I get loose on the curbs, but he managed to drive away from me.
Wong, Davis, and I pass this mysterious car on the front section of the next lap, but at this point Wong is FAR ahead. I try to setup myself up to bump Davis on the back straight of the track, but I killed my run into the section and find myself several car lengths behind. We turn another lap, and this time I manage to keep up to Davis on the back section. I give Davis a bump, but I forgot to shift into 5th as I was so focused on lining myself up. Not the first time this mistake has happened . As a result, my bump doesn't help all that much. Another lap gets turned, and as we head into T10 Wong and someone else get tied up. I'm too far behind to see what happens, but this give Davis and I the whole to run through. The next car up is wayyyy ahead, and Davis and I turn laps to try to catch up.
A few laps later Davis is closing on an orange car, Preciado. Preciado trying to hold 3rd gets VERY unlucky, as the race leader crosses the start finish just before the race timer hits zero, this gives both Davis and I one more lap to try to pass him. Going through T12, Davis gets a solid run, and Preciado try to take/defend the inside line. The curbing strikes again, as Preciado touches it on T13 and Davis drives around him. As a result of Preciado getting lose, I get a huge run out of T13 and T14, but I have to tap my brakes in T15 to avoid rear ending Preciado. My chances of passing might be gone, but I try to catch his draft into the back straight. Some how, I managed to pull up next to Preciado going into T19 and I find myself right next to him going into T20. Unfortunately we make contact, and I get a bad run coming out of T20 and Preciado nudges me by a nose across the line for P4. What a finish!

Roll bar is in!!!! Took a little longer than expected to get done, but its finally in the car. Thank you to TC Design in Campbell, CA for taking the car in and getting everything installed. They even washed the car, it was a mess when I dropped it off.

A few things to note about the setup. TC Design fabricated everything and welded it in. I opted to have the cage welded in vs bolted, I don't think I will ever be going back to stock with the car. As a result because I am on looking forward, we also cut the headliner to bring the main hoop up closer to the roof. As you can see in the photos there is ALOT of space between where your headliner sits and the actual roof. They did a great job of bringing the main hoop as close as they could against the roof and the sides of the car. The TC Design team also took the time to cut around trim pieces to make the install a little cleaner, which is much appreciated. One of the biggest things I noticed was the position of the diagonal bar in the main hoop, and the crossing of the x brace on the rear bars leading to the rear shock tower, they DO NOT block the rear view mirror! From my driver seat, I have a unobstructed clear view of the entire rear view window. I'm not sure if other setups are like this, but its very nice!

I also opted to upgrade my year old Sparco Pro 2000. I have a oddly proportioned body, which resulted in my shoulder blades covering the harness pass through on the Sparco. I ended up with a Racetech 4009WTHR (wide n tall, with head restraint). Finally they also installed a Racetech 6 point harness.

Track days are picking up again here, but I got a few more things to do with the car. Hopefully we can get out there relatively soon and shake everything down.

FHR arrived. A quick lock at a frontal head restraint, installing post onto my helmet, then testing fitting everything inside the car.

Car got some Element E50 Fire Extinguishers, a little different from your typical fire extinguisher but I like the idea that it doesn't need to be recharged.

Hope I never have to use thes.

Quick little project for the Sim Rig. With the Cayman sold, the plan is to turn the E30 into "around town" car, while the WRX goes to full track duty. That means the Corbeau seat that was on the sim rig, is now back in the E30. The Sparco Pro 2000 was up for use, but I decided to sell it and pocket the money for something else, so I turned to the stock WRX driver seat for the sim rig.

Here is a video of the process.

Curious what led you to sell the Cayman rather than turn it into a track car? Turning the nice daily (WRX) into a track car and the old BMW into a daily is an interesting choice. No negativity or judgement (I have a VA WRX daily, Porsche track car, and old an BMW garage queen). Just curious.

No matter what anyone says, I strongly believe the 987.1 is a terrible track car. I refused to be tricked by companies who insist installing a deep sump, baffle pan, additional oil pump, Accusump, etc etc will fix the Cayman's oiling problems.

Fundamentally the problem with the Cayman is that it is a Porsche parts bin car. The Boxter pulled Porsche from the brink, and the Cayman was just the hard top version of it. Pull up a Porsche PET, and every single part number starts with a 997.xxx.xxx.xx or 996.xxx.xxx.xx. Being a parts bin car, it didn't receive the nice dry sump system the older aircooled 911s got. It received a wet sump system, probably a cost cutting measure reflect of the time they were made. As a result, if you push them hard enough you'll spin a bearing. If any Cayman owner, with a M96/M97 motor, tells you they've been tracking their car without issue, they simply are not driving hard enough.

That is just the oil problem. Then you can get into how bad the AOS design is, and how they go bad constantly. Annoying as hell, but an easy fix. Porsche even develop a "motorsports" version of the AOS, undoubtedly because they knew it failed under hard use. They are stupid expensive too. The power steering is also weak on the cars, and yep you guessed it Porsche has an electrical "motorsport" power steering unit too! And also equally as expensive as the AOS.

Here is some links:
AOS - https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PK987SEP.html
Power steering - https://www.rennsport-one.com/shop/9...steering-pump/

Suffice to say, if I wanted to go fast and push hard the Cayman had way to many weak points. You could say the WRX has its own weakpoints, and some that are likely yet to be uncovered, all true because every car has a weak points. Relatively speaking, between the two the WRX probably can set a faster laptime than the Cayman with less money put into it. That and subaru parts are so much easier to find, and cheaper to buy. Porsche TAX is real. God is it real.

In the end don't get me wrong, Porsches are amazing cars and at the end of the day way more capable than a Subaru, BUT the 987.1 specifically is not a great foundation to start with. But hell, I'm not even sure a 3400lb WRX is a good foundation. I just slipped down the slope and here I am. I just was smart enough to avoid the mistake with the Cayman all the while making the mistake with the WRX. HAHA!

Oh I should note, I'm very very fond of the 9A1 motors. These came on the 987.2 and 981s. They have electrical oil pumps and are a much more robust motor. Here is some light reading on the 9A1 motor.
https://myemail.constantcontact.com/...id=KpujerQy6iw
And a old video of the 9A1 motor being put through a test rig to see its performance and oiling capabilities:

Sorry for the long post, but a lot of people think I am nuts to sell the Cayman. It just wasn't the right car for what I would have like to have done with it.

Quick little update here.

With all the new parts installed, I took the Saturday to make suspension adjustments to account for the change in weight as well as the change in weight distribution.

The car gained about 100 lbs with all the new additions, and this does not include the larger wheels and tires. I suspect this weight gain is closer to 150-175lbs, with about somewhere around 45% of it being unsprung weight. No ideal, but honestly the previous setup was extreme. 17inch rims, BBK but lighter than stock, 235 tire, etc etc. The new setup should be much more capable, but at a sacrifice for weight. As a result I think curb weight of the car with driver, is around 3500 lbs now. She's definitely not a lightweight.

Final alignment specs:
Camber FR/FL: -4 degrees
Toe: 0

Camber RR/RL: -2.5 degrees
Toe: 0

I took the car for a quick test drive, must to make sure everything was OK. Car tracked straight, barring any road crown. I also had the chance to load the tires up on a large cloverleaf onramp. With the pilot 4s tires, 265/35/18, the car managed a peak of 1.13g. Not to shabby. For street tires, this is pretty damn impressive. Especially considering the fz201s, 235/45/17, were able to produce about 1.2-1.25g.

Hopefully moving from a 235 to a 255, eeks out a little bit more cornering grip at the track. Guess we will find out.

Last minute track prep. With the car being done, and ready to go, I couldn't pass up on a last minute deal for a HPDE @ Thunderhill East. Very excited to finally get this car on track after almost a full year. Definitely going to be a different experience.

Took the photo above while I was trying to bed in the Ferodo 3.12. I was struggling with the pad, the tire, and the space I had. I didn't want to go too fast to get too much attention, but I had to go fast enough to get heat into the tires and pads. The FZ201s won't stick without heat, and it took about 10 good solid applications of the brake to finally get the tire to start to stick. Only then could I really start to get the pads to warm up.

I called it a quits after 15-20 mins because I just couldn't go fast enough, and brake as hard as I wanted. I did lay down some transfer layer onto the rotor, but I'm sure by the time I get to the track it will be gone. Hopefully it was enough too off gas any binding agents in the pad. I was at least able to get rotor temps to 430F.

Hopefully I'll have some track footage by Saturday.

More track footage!

I had a chance to visit Sonoma Raceway this past weekend. Unfortunately I couldn't find the space for a new PB attempt, but came within .5 second of the best time I've laid down there. I honestly think the car is mid 50s capable, and perhaps low 50s with the right tires.

This was my first NASA event, and although there was tons of traffic, I really enjoyed their emphasis on racecraft. Already signed up to go back in October.

With the new radiator in the car, and a test of it in 105+ weather, its time to make some improvements to airflow on the front of the car.

The first part of the project is to open up flow through the front grille. The stock grille leaves a lot to be desired. There is and inch of grille on the bottom that is completely closed off, the center portion of the grille's vents are closed, and there is a giant Subaru logo dead center.

I can understand why the center vents and Subaru logo don't matter much, as there is a hood latch support directly behind the grille blocking airflow through the AC condenser and radiator. I'm not sure why the closed off the bottom area of the grille though.

Took some time this weekend to cut up spare grille I purchased off of a local Subie owner. I took a plunge blade on my multi tool can cut out the upper section of the grille, just following the lines and being careful not to damage and of the OEM mounting points. For the bottom half of the grille I used masking tap to draw 3 lines, one across the bottom (again being careful to avoid the factory mounting points), and 2 lines running up from my bottom mask along the sides. The two masks on the sides tried to follow the diagonal lines coming off the upper portion of the grille.

The reason why I have two sections is because I cutting out one giant hole might make mounting the wire mesh more difficult, but I'm not sure. I'm waiting for the material to arrive, then see how difficult it is to work with and mount.

Here is a photo of the grille as it sits.

Ok the upper grille is done. Progress on the grille is below. It's a pretty straight forward process. After cutting the the sections of the grille, I use some card board to trace a template. I placed the template on the new mesh material, giving it some buffer room around the template. I slowly bent the mesh around the template, testing it against the grille for fitment. Relief cuts have to be made in certain sections so you can bend curves, and use temporary wire ties to hold the mesh to the grille while shaping it.

I also use a pair of sheers that would typically be used to cut a brake line on a bicycle. It was very effective.

Lastly, I ziptied portions of the mesh to the grille. For a cleaner look you could try to epoxy the mesh to the grille. I was lazy, and prefer the mechanical retention.

One draw back to this grille is that the mesh is relatively weak. I think it will be fine against small rocks, and rubber chunks, but anything larger or heavier might smash straight through the mesh. Nothing will be as strong as the factory grille, but that is the sacrifice we make to run the mesh.
