Transmission stuck to the block??
Doing my clutch in the wagon, got all 8 bellhousing nuts/bolts off, axles out, driveshaft off, crossmembers disconnected, and STILL can't get the trans to separate... What am I missing?

You have to pull the clutch fork pivot pin/guide/arm thing. Look right in front of the slave cylinder. Look for a hex key hole ( looks just like a oil galley plug) .

You're probably missing force if it's never been separated. Don't forget the pitch stop (under the intercooler), shifter linkage and neutral & reverse switch wiring as well, since you didn't list that. The locating pins are most likely stuck. I usually recommend pulling the motor for this reason, it's easier to apply force from above with everything out of the way. Last edited by retrac; 10-16-2011 at 06:43 PM. Reason: Put location of pitch stop. |

Yep got the pitch stop, wiring, starter. Everything is loose, just not breaking free

Retrac is right... If you aren't pulling the engine you need two jacks, one under engine the other under the tranny so you can assust with seperation. Undo your mounts before you do

What Retrac and Dubya said. The aluminum bell housing sticks to the aluminum block pretty tight after a few years. There are alignment pins that tend to really want to stay engaged. I had to *gently* use a sharp chisel to initially start the two sides apart (02 WRX). Once I saw a small separation, I used PB Blaster at the alignment pins to help free it up. Use a little anti-seize on the pins when you reassemble. Good luck.

Well 10 hours and the engine is still seized onto the trans. Pulled the motor up to see if that would do it but it's still stuck. I got aggressive enough to have the jack stands start shaking so im at a loss. I was thinking about using a gear puller where the starter goes and see if I can get the cases spread enough to get a chisel or pry bar between them. If not, motor and trans are coming out together and I'll beat the piss out of the trans on the garage floor. Talk about frustrating!

Mine was pretty stuck as well.... huge pry bar. I used a three footer and well placed jacks. Seamed like it would never come out, but it did.

Great Success! Got the trans down tonight. What a pain in the @$$!
and my secret tool to start separating the cases: simply a 2/3 jaw puller, put a socket and extension on the end, insert into the starter opening and the jaws grab the outer ring of the opening. gently tighten, wiggle the motor, tighten some more until you can get a pry bar in the between the two. Worked pretty slick, only took us an hour after I rigged up the tool. |

I realize I'm revitalizing an old/dead thread but I'm having a similar problem on my 08 WRX. I'm hoping the OP could repost/pm the pictures of how they had the jaw puller set up. Thanks. |
