It's started puffing some white smoke, which means oil is burning somewhere, so I'm thinking I'm going to take it down to Despain and have them smoke/compression test it to see if there's any possible leaks and if a seal is bad on a piston, that would explain the stutter. If, and that's a big if, everything comes back fine from Despain I'll run a bottle of injector cleaner, and do coils/plugs/filter. I've just gotta see what happens from here. Luckily my 08 is running awesome, and my new turbo should be here soon.
Yeah smoke/compression would be a good idea. For sure a leak down test. Hopefully everything goes good for you.

What turbo you go with on your 08?

Hill country forced inductions "modded" VF52. Its not some huge rotated set up, but will be a welcomed bump of HP from the stock TD04. They rebuild and ceramic coat turbos, but also do billet wheels and ports/polish. just waiting for it to get here so I can go do the pretune inspection and set up some dyno time. Bug eye is going to despain on Thursday for checks. I trust them a lot, and I know they'll figure out what issues this thing has.

That's a huge upgrade from a TD04 lol. You're gonna be happy with that. Maybe you can get a E85 map as well for that extra HP depending if you wanna go through the trouble's of finding E. Regardless you'll be happy with just the turbo upgrade.

Yeah I'm not sure how easy it is to find E85 around here, considering I can't even find 93. But the turbo will be a lot of fun once it gets here. I'm glad I got the extra bells and whistles because I was a little worried about spool time going to a bigger turbo, I just need it to get here so I can go down to Simple and have them put it together.

well, got it smoked and its got a bunch of leaks from the turbo inlet through the intercooler, boost control hoses, and throttle body. It's down at simple being looked at and they're going to help me with the AFR numbers after swapping leaking stuff. Better than a dead cylinder, which is what I was dreading. its gonna sit until after the holidays though.

Welp.. I spoke too soon. It's not a dead cylinder, but I have low-ish compression across the board. It's coming in around 125 on the compression test, So I now need to figure out what goes into pulling and refreshing an EJ20. I've never done this, but I'm mechanically inclined and willing to learn. Looks like it's going to sit for a while so I can read and buy some parts/piece together what I need before tearing it apart.

Also had copper spark plugs that were gapped way too far out, so Simple is throwing some iridium ones in at the proper gap and I'll see if that takes away the stutter.

Feeling like I bit off a little more than I can chew here, but you don't leap over a mountain, you go up one step at a time, right?

What am I missing? 125 is really good especially if they’re all reading equally

Apparantley that's "low" according to Simple. At our elevation it should be closer to 185/190 from what I was told.

The stutter is gone though, so I may just cruise it for a bit and then dive into the engine when I'm ready. As long as it runs and drives I'm happy to daily it while I do the turbo/tune on my hatch. I guess my big concern is, will the motor hold for drifting at 125 all around, or under that much load am I begging for it to grenade.

That is very interesting! I have never seen compression test that high before on a Subaru if i remember correctly. My cosworth block in my track car was reading 120 all around and runs like a champ. My daily is reading about the same and still running good.

Maybe it's the type of heads you have?

it's the stock block and heads, they have a ton of miles on them, so I knew a tear down was coming at some point. Despite "low" compression, the engine runs really well now that the plugs fixed the stutter, and I had a bunch of the seals/hoses replaced. Turbo spools nice and smooth, and pushes all the way to 17lbs. No banging or knock, and it seeks to be running great, only problem is an exhaust rattle that I just need to cut and weld a piece on. I'm actually really liking this little bugeye.

Niceeeee! Glad to hear you’re really liking the big eye. Also, glad to hear everything is running good.

I have to do my first oil change this weekend since I put the new engine in it August. I hit 3200 miles just yesterday so a little over what I would like. I also need to get my wheels rotated and possibly another alignment.

Luckily that just sounds like preventative maintenance. Is the new block in your daily or do you have a track car that you're doing all this on?
