Impreza GC8 Fiberglass Oversized V1-2 vents

So I got bored and depressed recovering from surgery and started reading the Bakemono, and Bikkjaa MR engine golf threads and decided it was time. I wanted a V1-2 WRX hood for years but it was always too pricey and rare.

(:back story time: When i was 16 I rigged up modded 22B vents and a V7 scoop on my 1994 impreza.The vents never fit right cause of the different design and the amount of work i did to make them look like they were to fit the car made it pointless. The part i really wanted was the over-sized prodrive 22B vent, but again, it was for the wrong hood. so i ended up not fully satisfied and really wanting over-sized V1-2 vents which don't exist.)

I find myself with a lot of free passive time and a lot of supplies laying around so i surfed the internet for 3D plans for 22B vents to print out into 2D. After figuring out how big was big enough i started cutting out foam insulation and gluing little one inch thick pieces together to make the plug core.

You can see the layout mat siting underneath the core, and how a 22B style insert can be sat and bonded (or bolted) inside the final product

<a href="<a href=" http:="" s1290.photobucket.com="" user="" iskrarawr="" media="" img_1215-1_zpsfb60ed2b.jpg.html"="" target="_blank">">
I got sick of cutting out triangles and did the sides as whole pieces. As i was building the shape I also figured to make the center slotted insert separate from the vent since it will be hard enough to make this shape, i could calculate the inside shape after a set of vents were produced so it'll all fit with less complication. This led me to the idea of making different inserts like a 22B insert or V-4 inserts or go all original. The purpose is to vent MOAR hot air than the old 22B vents I have installed. The plan in the end is to tilt the radiator forward and install an air divider & duct to exit hot air out the vents.

<a href="<a href=" http:="" s1290.photobucket.com="" user="" iskrarawr="" media="" img_1223-2_zps8d42b9df.jpg.html"="" target="_blank">">

I used long strand bondo-glass to fill the gaps and bond the rim to the shape better and back the underside for strength, the next step is to smooth it out a bit and use dent filler for the shape

<a href="<a href=" http:="" s1290.photobucket.com="" user="" iskrarawr="" media="" img_1221_zpsef730ab5.jpg.html"="" target="_blank">">

The rim is the same height left and right, but the plug edge on the inside sits lower than the outside since the V-1 hood is sorta inverse of the V-4 hood, a lot of small trimming will need to be done on the final product, I might as well do a fiberglass hood so I could bond the two together.

<a href="<a href=" http:="" s1290.photobucket.com="" user="" iskrarawr="" media="" img_1220_zps53ca097b.jpg.html"="" target="_blank">">

the front is an inch rise, the back is a half inch rise , but that will all change when being mounted to the hood since the funky hood lines will need be trimmed into the vent base. (though the way its coming out it could be trimmed to fit either hood with ease.)

<a href="<a href=" http:="" s1290.photobucket.com="" user="" iskrarawr="" media="" img_1222_zps1981cf14.jpg.html"="" target="_blank">">

the insert will be six slats 1.5" long. calculating left to right cant be done until a set of vents are made. Maybe ill post the twin large scale Prodrive style roof vent plugs, (i dont have AC and i get too hot with the Box truck aluminum vent setup from primitive motorsport)

(to come)... vent insert
