To gut, or not to gut
I'm considering having a muffler shop pull my stock STI quad tip exhaust apart, pull out the restrictive pieces and weld it pack together.
Has anyone done this? Really all I want is to let this STI sound like it should. Fitment issues with cheap exhausts sway me away. I want an SPT but not for $1000. So this is what I thought up. Might get good results for less than $100?! Edit: we used to do this to our Ducati Monsters back in the day with great results. Should be just as effective....in theory...

I wouldn't trust any of our local exhaust shops to do the job. Things might be different around where you live. I'm also not too familiar with your model, so I don't know how easy or difficult it would be.

Again in theory, this is a simple job. Probably less than an hour. I don't think a local shop, even in your area, would have trouble doing this.
I'm surprised no one has done this yet. There are several older model STI links I did find (with varying degrees of success), but none with the new 2008+ STI. A lot of people spend $800+ for an exhaust to just more sound out of their cars. Doing this would cost a fraction of the price and would yield the results desired. |

Sounds like you've already decided...
Outside of the muffler can itself, obviously the aftermarket units have larger mandrel bent piping that is sometimes a higher quality steel or even titanium in some rare cases. The muffler internally is often baffled and there is some material in there to dampen the sound without it being raspy or resonating too much based on the vehicle cabin design. The reality is that there is some testing involved in "Did the car make more power?" "Was the sound level and quality acceptable?" "Was there any noticable downsides like drone or resonance in the cabin, etc?" After those tests are done, a product is finalized, built, mass produced, marketed, distributed, sold, etc... With a markup for profit. What you think they will sell it to you for near cost, because you're on a budget? That said, I see no downsides to it, and if you're trying to save a buck, just do it. But note, there is some value to an aftermarket unit but how much will depend on your power goals... |
