Default DIY Powder Coating?

Just curious to see your thoughts on the DIY powder coating kits, like Eastwood's Hot Coat:
http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powd...-coat-kit.html

What were your results?

Mess?

Difficulty?

Quality of finish

Durability

Worth the $200?

Just curious to see if it is a worthwhile investment to refinish parts and re-powdercoat worn and refinished parts and some parts I will be making

works everybit as well as prof-shop coating, as long as you follow the directions, just like painting at home.

it is identical in durability, gloss, etc as prof. coating.

Mess: I have only done small/medium brackets, a V-8 intake manifold, some small go kart wheels. I have a very large garden tub (like for a water feature) I have a wire rack that sits in the tub. so any excess powder is collected in the tub. I have an area in my garage with some plastic in a corner with the tub on it... I can collect 95% of the excess.

I have found two (2) thing that cause less than stellar results:

* no dedicated oven that can go to 475* Fahrenheit
* improper removal of old coatings/paint & proper prep for coating.

The finish is only as good as the prep work.

When I have time I use mine at least once-twice a month.

I really need to start a gallery of coated parts...

One question I was wondering was when you hang it with the wire, does the powder coating fill underneath it, or does it leave a line?

Have you ever sandblasted a part then PC's it?
Does the finish self level out? say fill in the pits of the sandblasting

The powder will not fill around where the hanging wire is touching.

As for sandblasting stuff, It will smooth over a little bit of the dimples left from sand blasting but not all. It will leave a fairly rough finish. Use glass beads instead of sand. They cost about 4 times as much but they will not cut into the metal nearly as much. They just remove the coating and leave a satin finish on the metal. Just clean the parts off with soap and water after blasting them to get all the dust off. Then let them dry completely.

They used to. They still sell some powder though. The only thing I think Sears sells now is the Eastwood gun.

I know the $170 Eastwood gun is a quality unit. A family friend runs a huge powder coating and plating business. He has an amazing array of guns, and ovens. He even has an oven large enough to put entire cars in. All of the smaller stuff he does, though, he uses his 10 year old Eastwood gun. It's what got him started doing powder coating. He says, on small stuff, it honestly does just as good of a job as the $8000 setup he has.

A small up date:

One of my buddies mentioned the `famous harbor freight had a PC system for 60 bucks, so I said screw it and picked it up.

First impressions on how it works...It works awesome!
I just had a small dewalt compressor and a toaster oven to dry and it looks just like any other PC job. bigger ovens are on the way and I will also do a write u from step 0, all the way to after baking for everyone!
