Default Concerned about my oil consumption.

I’ve got a question about the oil consumption in my car.

I bought the car about a month and a bit ago, it had around 52,500 and I’m now around 55,800. When I first originally bought it I put 4L of oil in it after noticing that the dipstick was reading very low, I decided to do an oil and filter change after the same problem came as I checked the dipstick and was barely reading any oil again.

So I did the oil and filter change, went with Motul 5W40 FS 5L jug, I didn’t put all of it in, I left maybe half to 3/4 of a litre in the jug and I did that July 23rd. Went for a drive to work in the oil and let it do it’s thing, after about 30-40 mins of driving I arrived home, let the engine cool for a little and checked the dipstick, it read close full. When I checked the oil a couple days ago, the same problem is persisting with the dipstick not even reading at the lowest marker. There’s no smoking, no knocking, no weird noises, the car still has oil but I’m fearing that if I drive it when the dipstick reads on low, that the engine will seize and I’ll be looking for a new motor. Also, no oil light has come on since I’ve had it in the 2500kms I’ve had it, but I also wonder if the dealership disconnected that fuse as to hide a bigger issue.

When we did the oil change, we checked the plastic underpiece for any pooling of oil etc, and it didn’t look like it was an excessive amount of oil to the point that it was leaking anywhere underneath. All that we noticed was that the oil filter was leaking a slight bit, but nothing enough to cause a noticeable loss of oil. I’ve checked in the engine bay for any oil leaks, pooling of oil, there’s no spots of oil on the ground anywhere.

I’m not very experienced in the knowledge of Subaru’s as this is my first car/Subaru that I’ve ever owned, so any pieces of advice help. Thanks all.

The oil light comes on when oil pressure hits single digits. If it comes on, the car needs to turn off immediately or engine is pretty much toast.

That’s all to say, the light not coming on isn’t likely an issue. Unlikely to be foul play there.

These things can be funky when checking oil level, so best to check the dipstick after it sits overnight to get the most consistent reading. Did you also happen to register how much drained out when you did your oil change?

They can burn oil, so missing oil isn’t necessarily going to be from a leak. It does hint at other issues though...

Are you saying in 3000 miles you lost 4L of oil?
And you are saying that there is no oil leak anywhere?

You bought this car from a Dealership? Was it a Subaru Dealership?
Did you have a pre-inspection done before you bought the car?

What is the warranty on the car you purchased?

Sounds like you need to take the car to a Subaru pro shop who knows Subarus and have them determine what the problem(s) are. Once you have that, then you can determine your next move.

Yeah. When I did the first oil and filter change, we noticed that there was a considerable amount of oil that was gone already. From the time I put 4L of fully synthetic 5w30 mobil oil to the oil change, there was under half the jug of oil left and that couldn’t have been more than 20 days. Like I said though, there was still that little leak from the oil filter that had yet to be changed, but the problem is still persisting with the new oil filter.

I know for sure that the previous owner put some $$$ into the car though, so I’m unsure and fearing that they were pushing serious WHP on the stock engine and now I’m sitting here with a ticking time bomb. But I’m assuming the worst at this point.

pop the radiator cap off and take a look. if your coolant looks like oily sludge, you know where your oil went. hint-pop the cap off when its cool!

I bought it from a car dealership who's used to selling cars like the one I had bought, he had a couple other modded cars on the lot pending sold. 2 Years/ 24 Month Power Train Warranty ($1000 per claim, $250 deductible) is the warranty I got from the dealer and obviously the Subaru warranty is out the window because the car is older than the warranty even though under KMs. I have a buddy who does some serious work and knows a lot about Subaru's, so I'll most likely go to him and see if we can figure a deal out. Appreciate your time man
