Question I'm new what do I do?

Hey all,

I am officially the proud owner of a beautiful 2013 WRX Sedan. Pics related.

It only has about 70k miles and one previous owner and came with a ton of upgrades (about $6000 worth.)

Upgrades:
  • Cobb v3 AP
  • Cobb CAI with box
  • Invidia catless downpipe
  • Tomei equal length headers with up pipe
  • Invidia R400
  • Grimspeed EBCS
  • Exedy stage 1 clutch
  • BCBR coilovers
  • Rear Lower Control arms
  • Prova D shape steering wheel
  • Grimmspeed TMIC

I have only come across one issue, which I think is a fairly easy fix. I got a check engine light and pulled a P0171 and P0300 (Fuel bank lean.) Looking into it and doing a check for vacuum leaks, I found a leak somewhere near the intake manifold. I am thinking a hose connected to the EBCS popped off or cracked, but I have to take it apart to see.

Beyond that, I am not having any major issues, besides the fact that it was making 21 psi before the code and only 14-16 now--which is expected. I wanted to get some opinions on the modifications that were done and where to go from here. I love working on cars and am excited to learn more about forced injection as this is my first turbo'd vehicle.

Thanks a lot in advance!

-Ian

My login wasn't working over there for some reason, so I just went with imgur. Thanks!

So did you buy this car knowing it was throwing a code?

You're on the right track, fix the leak and hopefully the lean condition and misfire will go away.

What tune is the car running? OTS or Protuned?

Where to go is up to you. Looks. Handling. HP. Nothing. Four routes. We don't know your desires or budget and both are critical as I don't want to recommend a full Roger Clark Motorsport engine swap for $20,000 when you want JDM looks for $400.

handling modifications are in my opinion a good place to start. relatively cheap, no tune required, not terribly to hard to install, and have some nice benefits. I'd look into sway bars, shifter bushings, subframe bolts and bushings, diff, trans, and engine bushings and mounts. word of advice stick with one type of bushings ie. don't get comfort bushings for your trans and then race mounts for your engine.

good luck and welcome!

I did not know it was throwing a code, I test drove it with no issues and drove it 50 miles home with no issues. I think it's just a coincidence. The car is protuned.

Thanks for the response, your threads have already been super helpful to me. I was more wondering if the car seemed like it was missing anything/if it was on a certain track of upgrades that weren't obvious to me. It drives amazing even while throwing the P0171 code.

Nothing will kill the joy of a car quicker than chasing down maintenance issue after maintenance issue. Unless you have paperwork showing it has been done, I would look up the maintenance schedule for your car and make sure it's up to date with required items. Save your money and just drive the car for a bit and make sure no new issues pop up and either get under the car yourself or pay someone to give it a very thorough inspection.

I'd stay away from suspension modifications until you have a good feel for the car and what you need or want from it. You should make sure it has a good alignment.

Edit: I forgot to mention that you should put a steering wheel with an airbag back on there.

Thanks for the heads up about the steering wheel. I'm assuming it has an airbag (unless it's not possible) because it has the oem buttons and horn on top. It's already lowered with suspension mods as well, running on the harder side. I might try to raise it up a little and soften the suspension, but I'm still very new to the racecar life being that I switched from a Jeep haha.

Ahh ok cool it sounds like you're good then. I'd still want to make sure it works though, just to be safe.

Codes are gone! Found a little hose behind the intake manifold on the driver's side that had popped off. We are back to making 22 psi! Today was a great day!

Looking into getting an ewg or oil pan upgrade, any opinions on either subject would be appreciated!

I've run into a new issue here. Whenever I get to around 18-20 psi I notice a weird squeaking sound almost like air being let slowly out of a balloon while pinching the neck. It is much more noticeable in 5th gear. I called a local tuner since I haven't found a good mechanic near me yet and he told me my turbo is probably going bad?? I highly doubt this as my wrx only has 75k miles and has been very well maintained.

If anyone has any suggestions or diagnostics for me to run please let me know! I could use some help.
