Default 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA Review

Ryan takes the $48,995 Subaru WRX STI Type RA Limited Edition around the Thermal Club Race Track in Southern California. Is this just another warmed-over sticker package or has Subaru made real improvements in the already great WRX STI? Along for the ride is British Rally Champion and #farmkhana hot-shoe Mark Higgins.

I thought the "standard rear view camera" was required by law after ~2017? This review claims it is nice to have lol... more like, it better have a rear view camera!

I had a BMW that I swore was a 2018 that didn't have a back-up camera standard. Which really threw me. Need to read up on the law. (Keep in mind that back-up camera requirement dates have moved several times. IIRC the first date was supposed to be 2012?!)

According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
On March 31, 2014, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would require all automobiles sold in the United States built beginning in May 2018 to include backup cameras.
The article cited was by USA Today from 2014, so not sure if that's still current. I would say they are pretty much standard in the majority of new cars being made, though. What was more surprising to me was that the BRZ/FRS (or 86 now) didn't have steering wheel controls until the 2017 refresh

Talking 242 just got sold

I went to my local Subaru dealership to get some things done to my 2011 WRX and to my surprise all the guys at the dealership who know me. Told me they had just received number 242. It was a wonderful car interior wise and I got to see it in person before it got sold. The guy apparently who bought it traded in his 2015 STi from what I was told.

Number 160 is at Neil Huffman in Louisville and it’s all Black. If it wasn’t for them being a ****ty dealer I would really have made my wife angry tonight. It is gorgeous and I want it but am going to hold off to see what the next year or 2 bring.

Looking forward to what Subaru has planned for its next gen STI. The Type RA is cool, but I know Subaru can do a lot better, especially for almost $50K!

My thoughts exactly. Its neat, but not 10 grand over the base STI neat.

After owning 2 WRXs and driving other owner's STi's I would have to say it gives me a $50k smile every time I drive it until I hit lumpy pavement. most of the time that is not the issue lol.

any chance you know how much harder the ride is over the standard STi? I am planning on a 2020 in a few months, but with used RA's starting to drop in price I am considering hunting one down...

I daily drive this car. In saying that I will say I am not suffering back pain, in fact the only time the ride is jarring is when the roads are pretty trash. otherwise it is a comfortable car that loves to take corners quickly.

With the CF roof and the Bilstein shocks the car overall is stiffer but not so significantly that it would make a break your decision between a 2020 STi and the Type RA.

If you can get the RA for a good deal then go for it. You will be part of a very small group that is only getting smaller. only 497 Type RAs in the wild after 3 got totaled already.

Great. Thanks for the feedback!
Now I'll just hope there are a few on the market when I am ready to buy!

There are actually quite a few for sale right now. One dealer is even trying to sell a 000/000 for $47k!?!
I didn't think those could be sold to the public but I guess why not.
What does that do to the limited 500 run? Is a 000 car more rare? If it was a press car I think I'd stay away from it.
Unfortunately I still need to wait until spring before I can really start my search.

2 white type RAs at Planet (a NASIOC sponsor)

I don't know if these are numbered ones or 000/000 ones. I sort of assume the latter.

Just picked up #490 on Friday and it's an absolute blast. It's good to be back in a Scooby.
