Camshaft Position Sensor
My FB20 in the ‘14 impreza base wagon has a P0011 fault code, which i’m trying to diagnose what the problem is. I know the engine had a sludge buildup from the previous owner, which i attempted to clean what I could and then have been running some seafoam currently in it.
However, I am unable to find how to test this sensor. Anyone know?! Thanks

Odds are the sensor is OK unless you see oil down in the plug for the sensor - then replace the sensor. Most likely it is the sludge which can clog the filter screens for the cam sprockets (in the cam carriers) and jam the sprockets themselves. I have seen intake sprockets that have a mechanical failure as well, a pressed-in-place plate that holds a spring comes loose on the back side of the sprocket.
You're on the right track for sludge. How bad it is will determine what you have to do. Subaru diagnostic for that or any of the cam timing codes is start with an oil/filter change with Subaru engine cleaner - Seafoam in the oil should do the same. Then change oil and filter again. If sludge is real bad you may wish to do this twice. If you keep experiencing codes and you can see different values from side to side for the cam sprockets then you will need to pull the valve cover, timing cover, cam carrier and replace the screen and the sprocket. Might as well pull the pan and clean that and the pick-up while you're at it as well as clean cam carrier and head oil passages. Do the other side screen and sprocket as well so you don't have to do the job again when that side goes. BTW: If/when you replace the cam sprockets you may have to replace the ECM. There is a learned initial cam value that cannot be reset and most times when you replace the sprockets in those early FA/FB engines you have to install a new ECM or you will keep seeing codes. First sprocket I replaced Subaru Techline told me to replace the sprocket and then after that when the code came back replace the ECM. Couldn't tell me why. My field engineer finally explained it to me. Last edited by Elbert Bass; 08-13-2020 at 12:50 PM. Reason: Add oh-by-the-way |

Oh yeah - sorry I forgot first step - clear the code and swap the actuators on the front of the timing cover from side to side. if the code switches sides then it is just a bad actuator.
