Default 2000 Subaru Outback STI Hybrid build

Hello everyone, Im Dave and I'm getting started on a new project. Its a 2000 Subaru Outback that I am doing a hybrid build on. I'm shooting for around 300-350whp but im building it so I have room to grow. I'm currently having the factory ej251 heads rebuilt with turbo exhaust valves, and I'm having an ej257 shortblock rebuilt with wiseco pistons. I just got the up pipe built, and the jig motor set in to make sure everything fits good. I had to trim the crossmember but i will be reinforcing it when its in. So thats where i'm at now but ill keep updating this. I just wanted to document the build but wasnt sure where to post it. I've attached a few pics of the car and the turbo location. I wanted to see what you guys think would be the best route for tuning? I may need to do a full standalone which im ok with but wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks!

Sounds pretty interesting for sure! I'd suggest ID 1050x injectors. Your pics aren't working btw*

Have you replaced all the suspension bushings? At this age, I would certainly expect them all to be shot.

Thank you pickleslap! finally got the picture thing figured out. And no, I havent done anything suspension wise. The front struts were replaced when I bought it and the sway bar links look good in the front. Once I get the new motor in I will be slowly upgrading components. Inevitably if I achieve what I want power wise I will be upgrading the transmission/axles/differentials. Anyone have thoughts on what I should do for engine management?

Can someone tell me which injectors I need to purchase that will fit in my stock rails? 2000 outback ej251. I found a set of Injector Dynamics 1000s for 250 but they are for a 08+ sti. Wondering if I can just do adaptors but I’m unsure they will physically fit. Thanks, Dave

I got my crossover pipe, manifolds, and up pipe all wrapped up. Hopefully they are secure enough. Got the ej251 heads dropped off at the machine shop for a valve job and installation of turbo exhaust valves. Also I uploaded an image of my factory injector to see if you guys know what injectors I need to get that will fit. I cant find any 1000cc injectors that say they fit a 2000 outback. Also the last two are size comparisons between the td04 and the vf39.

Well i'm wanting to try and make 350whp so I think these would be maxed out for that amount dont you? Another person on here suggested 1000cc. Those look like physically they would fit but mine have this huge rubber seal on the bottom where it slides into the manifold. I guess I could order some and if they dont fit, return them.

Those guys there gave me excellent info when I was struggling with issues

Well, I thoroughly love this idea.

For injectors, are you planning on using pump gas or e85?

You won't find many aftermarket injectors that say they'll fit a 2000 Outback, but if you're using the STi fuel system then you'd want to go with injectors that fit the car that it came from.

350whp out of a VF39 on a EJ257 on pump gas probably won't happen. But stock STi injectors will flow enough to get the most out of it. If you're planning on e85, you should be able to hit that on some dynos and 1000cc injectors would be a good choice.

I'm not familiar with those heads, but I imagine that a stock STi ECU would work with a good tuner. If not then you're looking to go standalone.

For both of these questions, I'd find a really good tuner that you want to work with and get their opinions.

Thanks for you guys reply! I'm in SLC, which elevation also presents an issue and I'm not stuck on any number, I just want a stupid fast grocery getter/run up the canyon kind of car. I definitely want to stick with pump gas being as I may very well take it on trips. So let me ask you this, when you say if I use an sti fuel system do you mean running an sti intake manifold and everything?

Thanks for your offer Pickslap, I ended up ordering some FIC 1000cc injectors, i'll get you guys some updates once they come in monday. So I thought I would post this for any guys who are trying to do the same thing im doing. I had fun getting this walbro 255 to fit. They claimed it would fit with no modification but there's no way. The stock one was like 1/2" if not 3/4" longer, so I thought I'd post what I had to do. For starters, I broke the actual housing so I went ahead and got a new one on amazon for 70 bucks so all the components are new, however, the part where the pump slides into the housing is actually deeper so that helped. But as you can see I had to grind the plastic tabs at the bottom of the new pump flush and then remove the grommet that would normally go there. Everything is snug and the housing clips in to hold the pump in place.

Still waiting on the new motor to get assembled. Their builder got COVID, so it has pushed them back. Hopefully it wont be too much longer. On a side note I got all new multi layer steel gaskets for the cross pipe, manifold, and turbo from rally sport direct. Also got my gauges more permanently set up. Anyways, that's the only update for now.
