VA WRX 6 speed into GR/GV details
WRX 6 speed?! No not the famous STI 6 speed, the VA chassis split case 6 speed.
Before we go further someone will inevitably ask why not STI trans and why a weaker WRX 6 speed. First the car is a 2012 WRX GR I picked up for 5000 bucks! Sadly the clutch and 3rd gear we’re toast. Good news I had a full 2015 WRX 6 speed with rear diff and all the shifter box parts and cables I removed from our 2015 that we STI swapped. Also this car will always be stage 1 and not meant to be a power house, it’s a commuter and the 15 wrx 6 speed definitely has better gears for that. Also because I can do all this work myself there is zero labor cost. So here it is. There is no fabrication work required. Simply install the 6 speed and rear diff using your 5 speed clutch, axles and driveshaft. The shifter box bolts right into the trans tunnel no problem. Remove your 5 speed trans harness and switches and place them in the 6 speed. Have your tuner update your gear ratios and enjoy! I added a cheap shifter stop and cable bushing ( not short shifter) and it’s honestly not bad, the shifter stop improves the feel of 1-2 and 5-6 drastically! Sorry I took so little pics. It’s my daily and last weekend was crazy lol.

Interesting. I just assumed the split case 6MT was longer because of the extra gear.

Exciting to see this, couple questions to build upon?
This is super cool it's pretty much a direct swap. I have a 2013 hatch and would like to do this in my car. I see all the parts that you re-used from the GR which is exciting that the axles, driveshaft, and clutch bolt right up but had a couple questions on some of the smaller bits. Did you just re-use the slave cylinder from the VA transmission and the clutch line connected to it no problem? I am assuming you were able to use the GR clutch master cylinder? Also, which starter did you use? From what I see online it looks like the VA and GR starters are the same but couldn't determine this, were you able to re-use the GR starter?

FYI, this will also work on the GDs. If it fits the GDs, should also fit the GCs.
To make it work on my bugeye, I had to use the entire clutch, tranny, shifter box and cables, and rear diff. Main thing to deal with is that the shifter box mounting is not the same as the GRs. You have to drill two additional holes and open up two openings for it. Underneath the shifter box you have to do some hammering on the tranny tunnel as well. I also had to add axle stubs to the transmission in order for it to accept my female axles. |

Is the 2015+ Diff needed or can you get away with using the GR diff?

The 2015+ diff is required, it has a different ratio to my understanding.

You need a rear diff that matches the final drive of the trans. I did this swap in my 07 outback and used a 4.11 rear diff that matched the 2018 wrx trans, instead of the 4.44 that was in there stock on the outback

So stub axles in front and use OE axles is a check, but what axles are used in the rear since your using the MY15 diff? Also this has to use a vsspro right? Since I'm betting this trans doesn't have a VSS built-in like all the newer CANBUS vehicles, but are there any other wiring solutions needed? |
