Default It aint gon fall apart no more; Welded cir-clip phase2 centre diff

Here is a center diff taken out of a WRX tranny fitted with PPG straight cuts. I was doing the tranny swap because his OEM WRX tranny blew 3rd gear. The setup is a '02 WRX, TD05H 18G 7cm, EWG, E85, EJ257 shortblock swap.

As some of you may know, the center diff LOVES to fall apart. I have seen this in a '00 2.5RS, '00 Outback, and '03 WRX. To service the center diff you have to replace it. Subaru doesn't sell rebuild kits for the center diff. It's a sealed unit. Well.... then might as well weld the cir-clip that holds it together so you don't have to worry about it coming off ever again.

Holy cow, never knew center diffs were known for coming apart.

At the very least, those welds will make sure no human ever catches a whiff of the horrid stench contained in that thing!

This is sound logic. Kudos.

not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but will this mess up the balance? I think I would have paid someone a few bucks to just put a few short tig weld beads instead.

If I had a TIG welder, that's what I would have done.

We'll find out in the long run. This is why I welded both sides... I know a little off...

Only question I would have is how the VC juice liked that heat.. Since it is the heat created by friction that drives it towards the semi-solid state - I wonder how extreme heat could potentially damage it.

This is how the GUTS look like if you where to take one apart.
This center diff was taken apart, gutted and used as an OPEN diff for a hybrid final drive setup; 3.900tranny and 4.444 rear diff.

So - by these pictures, you're saying you opened it up - drained the VC's "fluid" and put it back together dry? Thats kind of like letting the magic smoke out.. It's not going to work anymore.....

And this is what I'm talking about..

The VC has to remain sealed with its fluid intact in order to work....

sorry I didn't describe anything....

but that's how it looks like INSIDE the VLSD center diff. The one with the welded c-clip was NOT taken apart.

Buy a new center diff. You'll enjoy a fresh VLSD with a happy c-clip.

Oof, that ain't in the budget. May try welding with or without the ring first...

Bought a 2001 outback 5 spd 4.11 tranny last year, found the thread about this cir clip getting itchy feet and decided to look at the center diff in my replacement tranny. Both rings were in place, but had a local shop put 3 small tigs at equal lengths apart from each other on the inside part of the rings. Not going ANY where now...

Not that much work to do it right the first time around though other than a bunch of cleaning...

By the looks of it he didn't actually take it apart. It's a pic from some other opened up diff.

Default can i weld my center diff instead of using a snap ring?

my old snap ring failed and messed up all the gears. got a new kit of shafts/gears, etc. and a new updated snap ring.

the new one is MUCH thicker than the old snap ring, and I tried everything to get it in place, but it won't go in.

i'm thinking of welding the 'cap' in place, using some small welds equally around the perimeter.

is that going to be ok? or any suggestions on getting the snap ring in place?
