Moving to the US
I want to move to the USA (trisate area) from Canada. The thing is, I have no relatives there, no job sponsors. So, does anyone have any suggestions as what I should do? Does anyone know of any companies that sponsor people from Canada?

Cool Hmm how about something related to school? I know a few of my distant relatives came to the US from Poland by taking part in some school thing and they stayed in the US.
I don't know if that really helps but good luck |

That's a good suggestion. It's just that I need financial aid and I don't think I'd be able to get it.

My problem with the financial aid is that my dad works for the government and in the eyes of lenders, he makes too much money. But, in reality, he has no money to give me. It's so messed up. I hate the system!

Nah, thats half the reason people join our military is to use it as a way to gain citizenship. Hell my first roommate at Ft Drum was a Korean citizen. Eric |

Don't worry, just being semi-serious, no disrespect intended toward the service
And that's all I'll say, as this thread is getting way OT and not helping answer the poster's questions. |

When I was on active duty in the Marines, there was I kid in my platoon that was from Mexico and barely spoke English, Also my best friend that I served with was from Peru and got his citizen ship after serving. I respect the hell outa someone that will come here and serve our country give their lives and they are not even citizens! There were a couple Marines that just died in the gulf that were Mexican and got their citizenship posthumously. Ur right what a country!!!!!!!!!!

it probably wouldnt be to hard to find a job in this area as a bartender, there are tons of clubs/restaurants etc.
that would be your best bet, dollar wise, but longevity is another issue. not too many places (in regards to retail/telemarketing etc) will pay 8 bucks or more starting...with just a high school diploma. All I can offer as advice, is, save every penny you can. Buy only what you need. It will be hard but, you need to have a good chunk to make the move. Cause when you get here if you cant find a job you will be screwed. And even then an 8 dollar an hour job will not provide you with enough money for a place to live. and the cost of living in this area, nevermind the fact you will need transporation, car insurance. Figure a one bedroom place will cost you anywhere from 800 - 1200 bucks a month depending weather or not utilities are included. Not trying ot discourage you, but its alot to think about and will be very demanding to make such a move. Jay |

You might be able to live on 8 bucks an hour upstate ny, but, not near nyc, or anywhere in NJ. You will make very good money bartending, pletny more than 8 bucks....

If you are considering going to a school in the city, you may want to look for a place a bit outside of the city it may be cheaper. Just have to find something near a train

You have 4 choices.
1) Get a F1 student visa and go to college here. After completing school, you can apply for 1 year OPT (Optional Practical Training) visa through INS to apply to various companies. 2) Because you are a Canadian citizen, you are eligible to apply for a TN visa. This is a work permit for Canadians working in the US. I don't know if you need to be accepted by an American company beforehand or not. Either way, a company sponsors you for a TN visa and you can start working in the US. 3) Find an American citizen and marry her. You will be granted with a conditional (probational) green card for 2 years. After that, you are entitled to apply for a regular green card. 4) Apply for a yearly green card lottery through INS. If you're lucky, you will get a green card and you can live in the US forever. |
