Help - turbo metal in otherwise good motor
I have 36,000mi on a rods/pistons/studs/JE proseal short block with ported heads and some other cool stuff. I just caught the still stock VF turbo making noise like one of the wheels is hitting the housing. Even though my cold and hot oil pressures haven’t changed noticeably recently, I started to investigate.
Obviously it’s getting a new turbo. The bad news is there’s a lot of glitter in the oil from the failing CHRA bearings. Besides replacing the oil cooler, pulling the pan and cleaning it and the pickup, and maybe taking the AVCS pulleys apart (again) for cleaning - anyone have good ideas how to get metal out of an otherwise fine motor? I datalogged AVCS response on both sides and they work fine FWIW. This is/was a really solid motor - 35 idle 80 cruise oil pressure, barely used any oil between changes, no smoke, great vacuum

Multiple oil changes with clean oil in a short time and then send your oil to Blackstone for analysis to see what metal is left and where is it comming from.
