2006 Impreza 2.5i, 4EAT
78,000 miles
Mods: Williaty hybrid intake, STI catback
CEL(s): P0700(Transmission Control System malfunction), P1718(AT CAN communication circuit)

I have searched all over this forum and the internet for solutions to this, but every thread seems to end without the OP ever posting how they fixed the issue..

Two days ago I drove to the gym, car was fine. However, when I left, the CEL came on. At first, the AT OIL temp was illuminated, but is no longer on. So I pulled the codes and got a p0700 and a p1718. Car still seems to be driving fine, no weird smells, still shifts smoothly and idles great. I attempted to clear the codes, but they stayed on. The only information I've been able to gather is that a few posters say it could be some sort of loose connection in the wiring/connectors, a short in the system or a loose ground but I have NO idea at all where to look for these Transmission connections.
I've recently changed the oil and had the cooling system flushed before winter. Other than that, I haven't done any work on it recently.

Only mods are the Williaty Hybrid intake mod from here(been on for about 4 months, never any problems/CELS before) and an STI catback.

Any input at all would really be appreciated. I am at a loss here and the light has been on for about 5 days now. I am starting to get worried since it is my only DD. Just wanted to see if anyone had any solutions before I take it in to the dealer.

Update: checked the transmission fluid today, levels are good and the fluid looks and smells normal. Checked the TCU under the steering column, no loose or shorted wires there at all. All fuses are intact. Reset the ECU again after all this and the light is still on.. Really at a loss

Update 2: when driving back to school tonight, the headlights both completely shut off in the middle of driving on the road. Pulled over, checked the fuses and both were intact. Then the headlights worked again after I turned the car off and back on. I did notice a significant drop in the voltage before the lights went out. Voltage dropped from about 14.3 to 12.5, which is shocking. So I am wondering if this is related to my CEL problem, maybe my charging system/ battery or alternator is malfunctioning. Guess I will be checking them tomorrow...

Bump.. The codes went away for about 2 weeks with no problems, and then today the CEL came back on. Pulled the code and its the P0700 and P1718 again...really frustrating as I have checked every connection and the TCU multiple times.. Made an appointment at the Subaru dealership for next Monday but if anyone has any input in the meantime I would greatly appreciate it..

I'm guessing you haven't had any luck finding a solution, either?

Not yet. I had a problem last week when i put the car in reverse it killed the engine and blew the ignition fuse. Then threw the check engine light. I'm thinking the problem is the reverse switch. I haven't verified yet as the problem went away the same day.

Hm, well at least you have some sort of idea, Lol. Mine hasn't blown any fuses or anything, it shifts great and idles perfectly. So even after you replaced the fuse, do you still have the CEL?

Yea I have cleared the code several times and the codes keep coming back. Would you please tell me what Subaru says when you go?

Now today the codes went away again. I was hoping they would stay on so the dealership could really figure it out.. Hopefully they still can.

I have a feeling they will know the problem exactly. I have a feeling it's a sensor on the side of the tranny.

Which sensor exactly are you talking about, and where specifically is it located??

Well the dealership couldn't do anything about it or tell me what the problem is since the codes weren't present at the time the car was in for service.. So here I am back at square one.. Hope the light just doesn't come on again.

I believe it's on the passenger side of tranny. I traded my 2.5i in yesterday on a 2013 wrx. Good luck fixing the problem!

Annnnnnnd now it's back off again. Really frustrating since it won't stay on long enough for me to get an appointment to get it looked at.

What made them conclude that it was the ECU? I've since replaced the hid kit with a higher quality OEM brand and the problem seems to have gone away. I was using 55w DDM ballasts before which are a poor quality.. I'm thinking they were causing the problem.

Sounds exactly like mine. I tried two alternators and the problem seems to have subsided. No more CELs or anything out of the norm. The idle voltage is still only 12.5-12.8, but that may just be how it is on these cars. I did also replace a couple grounds with some 4 gauge wire, which seemed to gain me around 0.2-0.3 volts at idle.

Unhappy Check Engine Light On

I have a Subaru Impreza 2.5 2006/ I am having the same problem with the Check Eng light coming on and off. OBD2 DTC codes indicated P0700 and P1718. Brought it to the dealership but they were unable to fault ( I was charged half the labour cost) Check Eng light reset but came on again with the same codes. This time I erased the codes myself. My question is this: Are there any danger or hazard associated with these 2 codes? Since the experts are not able to fix the problem permanently, what can I do?

The only thing I experienced was that cruise control would not work while the codes were on. The car still drove and shifted as it should.

Well that explains why my cruise control on my 05 outback xt isn't working. I have the P1718. That's my only code. AT CAN communication circuit. That's pretty much all I know after reading this thread: There might be a sensor on the passenger side of the transmission, but no confirmation there.
I bought my car with a engine that broke a rod and piston. Built a whole new engine using a lot of parts from this sites classifieds and a short block from a guy off craigslist in Seattle that turned out to be bad. Just bought a used long block from a guy in Portland here and put it in yesterday. So I'm really just driving the car for the first time. It would be nice to have functional cruise control and no check engine light!

I'm assuming I can just manually clear the code for good using my tactrix cable, ecu flash, and romraider to fool the cruise into working again and not having my check engine light on. But... I was hoping for some knowledge about the code, and what it means, it's relevance/ importance. My trans shifts ok, but it makes some bad noises at idle that are definitely not the engine. If finding a fix for the P1718 made the tranny noise go away, I'd be very pleased :-)
