Default Rear end clunk

Hi all,

My daughter has an ‘05 Impreza outback sport and it just started making some strange noises in the back. There is a intermittent clunking noise along with the sound almost like something is rubbing. I lifted the rear and visually inspected everything (all looks good) and spun both rear wheels. The passenger side makes a kind of rubbing noise but not real bad, drivers side is fine. I was assuming that it might be the wheel bearing and was going to replace but nowhere have I read about the clunking sound with the bearing or hub. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mark

I've had the diff mounts (the two above the rear end of the diff) shred; the diff is then free to roll and makes a loud thunk when getting on and off the gas. Unfortunately they're pressed into the rear crossmember so it isn't a DIY job unless you have a press and are prepared to dismantle the rear suspension. It's usually easy to see - there will be a couple of bolts free-floating inside rubber donuts; you can usually check without even lifting the car - just shine a strong light at the diff from directly behind and look a few inches directly above the diff.

Likely rear diff bushings or swaybar issue.

Likely culprits are:
-Rear diff bushings
-Subframe bolts which they make a subframe lock down kit to help with this
-Swaybar end links
-Rear struts

Bearings typically make a buzzing/humming sound on these cars. The above mentioned can make clunking noises under various situations. Chances are one of them is a bigger issue than the others, but given the age of the car, all of them should be addressed and aren't expensive especially if you can do the work yourself.

Is that the case with the 05 Impreza Outback sport model? I think anything above 2002 would be the "mustache bar" type of mounting.
