if I could put a 6spd setup into my 99 Impreza wagon, you can too.

Just wondered if anyone could give any accurate information as to the difference in performance between the type 1 REAR VLSD's and type 2 REAR VLSD's ?
The type 1 clearly has a much fatter viscous unit and I have read that the STI centre viscous VLSD had five times the torque of the standard VLSD .
Is the rear comparison similar ?
And how come the type 1 is not referred to as STI , I thought these torquier VLSD's were an STI upgrade ?
I have a good used 4.11 diff with a type 1 , and I have a brand new type 1 VLSD unit as a spare . However I have been unable in months of searching to find any definitive info on the exact comparison of these two and I have never read of anyone with actual driving effectiveness experience .
Because I could find no information I purchased a further new ' in the box ' 4.11 R160 diff and had a Kaaz 1.5 way fitted .
But I would still like to know the truth about this so called type 1 VLSD please . Matt

Default vlsd half shaft sheared off

hi guys. i have a 2007 seubaru wrx r160 vlsd v2 diff. last year dropped the clutch hard one to many times and sheared off the driver side rear stub axle that fits inside the diff. just wondering if anyone has some imput like a photo of how far the splines engage in the diff. hopfully the pics make it easier to understand.

as you can see the axle sheared off not at the base of the splines but onlu like half way through.

sorry for blurry pic ill try and get a better one if i can find the part.

just seems like a lame design not using all the splines avaliable.

does the clsd have similar spline engagment?

thanks

Thank you for this!!!

By far the most insight and info received from a forum in regards to differentials.

And thanks for taking the time to assist the ones whom don't know as much to sift through the misinformation.

Fateo66 I have recently aquired a 2002 WRX from my son and so I decided to change the fluids because I am sure he hadn't in the time that he had the car. Everything looked good until I got to the rear diff. When I pulled the drain plug the magnet looked the end of a pine cone. These were the teeth from the spyder gear. That being said, can you point me in a direction for new spider gears or a rear diff. that is not going to break my wallet?

Thanks

It would be awesome if there was a parts compatibility chart in here to go with the awesome differential pictures and descriptions.

Something to tell transmission noobs like myself what R160 parts are interchangeable between cars and years, for example, what LSDs are a direct fit to replace an R160 Open diff.

(I want LSD in my 2006 2.5i, and would love to know which LSD's can be swapped in for my open diff, using my ring and pinion.)

If it helps any, there are also open and viscous units that have bolt in stubs, like my 91ss (viscous) and my 90ls/91lsi (open)

If you read through the entire thread, you will see that this statement was proven false. Unfortunately the OP has not gone in and corrected his mistakes.

Good work.

There is another Subaru R160. The "small" R160. It came in automatic Impreza late 90's to 01. You can tell it by the finned cover and it takes different smaller axles.

That would be the "VA Type" and not compatable with "T Type" housings. Everything about them is smaller. Bearings and axle splines for certain. I never bothered to try swapping ring gears between the two types.

Has anyone come across a R160 VLSD where the 2nd set of splines on the right hand drive shaft is the same diameter as the first set, unlike the above pic where the diameter of the first set of splines is thinner than the 2nd set of splines on the drive shaft ?

Sorry to ask foolish questions, but is there any way to identify the diff inside, by outside of the R160 case? Numbers, wax marks, unicorns, etc?

Also, I'm unclear. If I DO get lucky enough to find an R160 with a SureTrac, do I need to replace my rear axles as well (2002 WRX wagon 6/1 build date)?

Thank you!

I can't see any of the pics and am left wondering what is the best plan of action for my build so I get parts list in the proper order... Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm off to try and find another thread as I'm sure your going to roast my differential regardless is pissing you off. Thanks!

Default great post

definitely a wealth of knowledge there!! speaking in terms of the stock 02 wrx 5 speed, do you know any sure fire way to tell if the front diff bearings are going out? i get a rattling/slight grinding noise during off throttle decel. touch the gas its gone, engage the clutch its gone, and its only real loud between 4000rpm's and around 2000rpm's. it has been going on for some time now and everyone i bring it to tells me something different. its driving me crazy trying to figure it out.

Default Axles

Hey guys I'm from nz and have diffs and axles alloyd over the show. I know this is old but I can assure you that version 3/4 and 5/6 have normal axles difference between the 2 is at the end of each stub that goes into diff 3/4 ones are flat and the 5/6 ones have a little taper. As for version 1/2 93-mid 96 all have the "special axle" not so special here we got them all over the show. All r160 from v3 to v8 diff all use the same axle. R180 is the only difference having the bigger axles as I have a ap suretrac 4.444 r180 in my 1989 legacy. Which from factory had the longer axle. This info is correct as in my drive way I have a 89 rs bc5. 2x version 2 wrx version 3/4 wrx a 5/6 wrx and a v8 stI I know them pretty much inside out. Got diffs and axles galore!

See the end of your axle it tapers? Here in nz the version 3/4 ones do not do that and have teeth all the way to the end I think if you were to use those axles I have mentioned it might solve your problem as I had same is sure with a customer here I put the axle I mentioned in and am yet to have an issue

Here in nz r160 will bolt to anything and vice version just as long as you match the axles and use correct final drive. I'm running 04 v8 sti gearbox diff axles hubs brembos sway bars steering rack front subframe etc all in my 89 bc5 rs legacy alloyd direct bolt in. Subaru is like Lego just about anything fits

Default legacy ss open diff to vlsd swap.

I have a mt5 1993 legacy ss with a stock 3.90fd open diff. Can I swap in a 3.90fd 91/92 legacy ss vlsd using the rear axles already on my car?

If not, how hard is it to find the correct rear axle stubs? or is it possible to open up the axle housing and put the vlsd differential case into my open diff housing?
