Default programming mode for 2012 impreza keyless entry?

Hi,

I can't seem to get my car into programming mode to program the keyless entry remote. I followed all of the instructions I could find (all variations), but none of these are specifically for a 2012 impreza.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a 2012 into programming mode without going to a dealer?

And if I do have to go to the dealer, any idea how much (approximately) I should expect to pay to just have the buttons programmed? I know it costs somewhere around 130 at my local dealer to get a key cut and programmed, but I don't care about programming the transponder chip right now, or cutting the key. I just wanted something that could turn on and off the alarm so I could use the valet key without setting off the alarm every time I open the doors.

Thanks for any help!

I don't think what you're trying to do is possible with the factory alarm.

Ive HEARD that some locksmiths have the ability to do this. Ive yet to actually look into it. From what I ultimately understand is that you need to visit the dealer to pay them an arm and a leg.

The one you didn't try is listed on page 2-11 in your owner's manual: Take it to the dealer and have it programmed, although for the keyless remote you don't need an immobilizer code, so you *might* be able to access the appropriate functions with a good scan tool.

Thanks for all the responses.

My dealer wants 130 dollars to program the key. It wasn't clear as to whether or not this included cutting the key, and I did not ask because I don't have an extra 130 dollars laying around right now anyway.

I asked if they could program just the keyless entry buttons for less money, because I really only wanted this spare key for the ability to turn on and off the alarm. They don't do that there, though. (Or, he didn't understand what I was asking, but I think that he did.)

130 seems kind of ridiculous to me, especially if it doesn't include cutting the key.

I also verified that the 2012 impreza can't be put into programming mode by the customer. Older models could, but not newer ones. He said that was for security, so no one else could program their remote to unlock my doors, but I'm not sure if I understand that logic. I mean, it still required a key to get the older models into programming mode, was it that much more of a security risk for people to be able to program their own keyless entry remotes? If someone already has a key.. well, nevermind, that's irrelevant right now.

Of course, this was all according to a guy at the dealer.. I'd still like verification from someone who doesn't stand to profit from programming my remote (which I suppose I just got from those of you who responded so far).

So wait, you have a valet key that you use, and you already have another remote/key that isn't programmed/cut?

Don't lose your valet key, man, you have to have one working key or you're replacing the BIU and ECU.

I actually have one regular key, with the buttons and one valet key. The valet key is my spare, which I use whenever I have to get anything out of my car after I'm home (the main key is in my purse which is nowhere near the garage, the spare is kept on a hook near the garage). It is just driving me crazy that the alarm goes off whenever I use the valet key to unlock the doors.

I'm not sure that this is an issue that is worth 130 dollars, though.

I just wish I'd done more research before ordering the key.. I assumed that I could program the buttons myself and use the blank key as a keychain for my valet key (since they don't sell separate key fobs for my car). Then if I ever lost my main key, I could get the blank cut and programmed. I'd read instructions on lots of websites and watched several videos and I neglected to notice that none of those were for 2012s or newer.

Oh well... looks like I'm out of luck.

That makes absolutely no sense why you'd do that, but I'll just assume I'm the one that's not making any sense and that you have a good reason that I don't understand.

You might be right, it might not make sense. I might just be lazy. I don't want to go all the way to the front of the house to get my key whenever I leave something in my car (which I do more often than I would like to admit!). It's not even that big of a house, I don't know why this suddenly became so important to me.

All I really wanted was a spare keyless entry remote, but they don't sell any that aren't integrated with the key. if I had been able to program the buttons myself like I thought I could, I would have had a spare keyfob that just happened to also have an uncut key blade attached.

Not that I wouldn't like to cut and program it too, of course. I just don't have the money right now.

Gotcha.

Don't set the alarm when parking in your garage?

Oh.

Subaru is currently selling their interface/laptop to independent shops now, so it's possible you could find a subaru specialty shop that has everything needed to program it. I'm not sure if they'd be any cheaper though.

I didn't even think to call around to other shops. I'll do that, thanks for the tip!

Haha, yeah, but that requires actual logic! Not sure if I can manage that

sorry to bump this thread but did you ever figure out how to get the 2012 into programming mode?

I've tried 3-4 different methods but still don't get the chime or dome light flashing.

Close door.
Open and close door
Key from lock to on 10 times in under 15 seconds then stop in acc
I get nothing
