Ugh. Since Mercedes will win the Constructor's and Driver's titles, want Bottas to pull a Rosberg this season (minus the crashing into team mates bit) and get a championship.

McLaren set for shock F1 reunion with iconic Gulf Oil brand.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/m...brand/4842608/

McLaren is set to bring the iconic Gulf Oil brand back to Formula 1 as part of a new sponsorship deal.

Images of a McLaren showcar on a photoshoot at a Gulf-branded petrol station began circulating on social media on Thursday.

With Lando Norris and CEO Zak Brown taking centre stage, the McLaren car was spotted with the famous Gulf logo on the engine cover – suggesting that the team had concluded an agreement with the company and was preparing promotional material.

The team’s previous sponsorship deal with oil and fuel supplier Petrobras had been terminated at the end of last year, and the Woking-based outfit appears to have wasted little time in finding a replacement. McLaren declined to comment about the nature of the photoshoot nor of any potential partnership with Gulf.

However, the team posted a teaser image on Twitter that featured the Gulf logo from the shoot – albeit blurred out.

Pulling off a deal with Gulf would mark a renewal of a partnership that goes back to the origins of McLaren. In the 1960s, Gulf Oil sponsored Bruce McLaren’s efforts in F1 and in the popular Can-Am sports car championship.

The Gulf logo went on to become one of the most well-known in motor racing. It featured heavily in the 1971 movie Le Mans, with Steve McQueen driving for the Gulf-backed Porsche team.

The company went on to enjoy numerous victories at Le Mans, and in the 1990s it renewed a sponsorship partnership with McLaren and the privately-owned race team run by Ray Bellm.

The Gulf McLaren F1 GTR was dominant in sportscar racing at the time, winning the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and the GT Class at Le Mans in 1997.

U.S., Mexico and Brazil races will not go ahead in 2020.
Nurburgring, Imola, and Portimao will be added.

Yesterday I read that Ferrari were busted (paraphrasing so don't kick my ass) with regards to their fuel flow meter, thus the lack of power.

Trying to understand, if the cars are limited to a certain amount of weight of fuel, what difference does it make as to the flow of fuel? If a team were flowing to much fuel, and they have to conserve at the end of the race, shouldn't that be their strategy call? What am I missing? Why is there a need to regulate flow AND quantity of fuel?

I never understood the fuel flow (100 kg/hr) limit either.

So I did a quick look - and umm this makes a lot of sense.

TL;DR: FIA doesn't want a race where everyone saves fuel for the entire thing then dumps it all in the last few laps on a mad dash for the flag. They wanted to promote the fuel efficiency of the turbo engines and they want drivers to push as much as they want. The best solution for this is limited fuel and limited fuel flow, so the focus is 100% on the engine efficiency. Good for the business, good for the show.

Good info, thank you!

The concerns about "good for the show" seem valid. Too bad we already know the winner of this season, probably next season too. Nothing interesting about watching the "winner" of the race, race. Kinda like when Ferrari were running the Bridgestones.

That guy is missing a lot of apexes. Zandvoort is one of my favorite tracks in iRacing. I imagine it would be a blast to drive in an f1 car. Not sure about much passing, since it's very flowing and technical... not many hard braking zones.

No more wins fort Ferrari until 2022?

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f...lkann/4845193/

With the Italian outfit having fallen away from the pace-setting Mercedes outfit, it is under no illusions about the effort that is going to be required to get back in contention.

But with a raft of cost-cutting measures having been introduced that limit the changes teams can make to cars, Ferrari is resigned to being unable to respond in the short term.

Elkann, speaking at length to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport about Ferrari's form, suggests that it will not be until new rules come into play in 2022 that it can target returning regularly to the front.

"[Ferrari is going] through a difficult period that starts far back," he said. "We have not won a constructors' world championship since 2008 nor a drivers' one since 2007.

"There has been Red Bull's winning cycle thanks to aerodynamic capacity and then Mercedes for their great ability in hybrid engine technologies.

"This year we are not competitive thanks to project errors. We have had a number of structural weaknesses that have existed for some time in aerodynamics and in the dynamics of the vehicle. We have also lost out in engine power.

"The reality is that our car is not competitive. You saw it on the track and you will see it again.

"Today we are laying the foundations for being competitive and returning to winning when the rules change in 2022. I am convinced of this."

Elkann suggests that the chassis freeze, which prevents teams making major changes to their cars over the next two years, is a major factor in why it cannot recover faster.

Asked how much it penalises Ferrari, he said: "A lot, given that we have started off poorly.

"We must be realistic and aware of the structural weaknesses with which we have been living for a decade, and which the transition to hybrid [power units] has underlined.

"We have given the okay to the new rules that will start from 2022, because we believe it is right that there is greater competitiveness within F1.

"We do not see the limitation of budget caps as a constraint on our ability to win. We take it as a challenge.

"Our engineers, our mechanics and our drivers will find strength and creativity within those bonds to bring Ferrari back up. Personally I have never seen in the last 10 years such a cohesive and strong spirit."

While Elkann's view on how long it will take to recover may not be what Ferrari fans want to hear, he says it is important the team was transparent about its situation.

"The fans are suffering as much as we are, but we know they are close to us," he said. "This is why it is important to be clear and honest with them. A long path awaits us.

"When [Jean] Todt opened that historic cycle [of titles] in 2000, we came from a fast that had lasted for over 20 years from 1979. It took time from him landing in Maranello in 1993 to Ferrari's return to success.

"The important thing then is to work on the track and off the track, in a cohesive way, building the Ferrari we want to step-by-step."

Elkann has also emphasised that he has complete faith in team principal Mattia Binotto, despite the early season struggles.

"Total trust," he said. "Also because Mattia Binotto, who has taken the helm of the Scuderia for a year, has all the skills and characteristics to start a new winning cycle. He was in Ferrari with Todt and Schumi.

"He knows how to win and from next year he will work with two drivers who are young and ambitious like us."

Guess that's why they are letting Vettel go. What's the point on having a $30mi/year driver when the car is going to be a piece of crap for the next 2 years.

So last years chassis suck too?
How much HP was that engine putting out to overcome that?
How much HP did they lose? Gotta be more than the reported 50 hp.
I see why Wolf was pissed at Ferrari. He said that the Mercedes engine had to be pushed to the limit just to keep up. And now the Mercedes is a monster now!

Edit: Wolf claims that the Ferrari engine put out as much as 68hp more than the Mercedes engine in 2019.
So that explains a lot.

https://www.planetf1.com/news/ferrar...tage-mercedes/

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed that Ferrari had an "68 horsepower" advantage over them at some races in 2019.

Although the Silver Arrows started 2019 with the strongest race car, it was Ferrari who arguably took over that distinction once Formula 1 emerged from the summer break.

The SF90 took victory on the high-power Spa and Monza circuits, though that performance would vanish later in the season after the FIA released technical directives relating to engine performance.

To this day the details of the private settlement between Ferrari and the FIA surrounding the engine have never been revealed.

And while it was clear that the engine in the SF90 was a step up on Mercedes' at its peak, the difference Wolff describes is quite an eye-opener.

"I do not know where the others see their weaknesses or their strengths. I can only judge us," he told Auto Motor und Sport.

"We were so challenged by Ferrari on the engine side last year that we went in new directions to find performance.

"The cooperation between Brixworth and Brackley was also very strong. The two departments really pulled together and clearly weighted Aero against Power.

"On the other hand, the ratio of downforce to air resistance is properly balanced in the current car. We have a lot of grip in almost all corners, but we still see smaller weak spots in slow corners.

"In some races last year, we saw more than 50 kilowatts of power difference (68 hp).

"For us, the task arose: How much power can we actually extract?

"And you can only find them in the internal combustion engine. All other areas are limited. We turned over every stone we could find. Not a few horsepower, but more."

Perez out of British GP.
Maybe the next one too.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/s...aign=widget-22

Racing Point driver Perez was not present at Silverstone on Thursday after his latest COVID-19 test result proved inconclusive, meaning he required a re-test.

In a statement issued by the FIA on Thursday evening, it was announced that Perez’s second test result had come back positive.

“Following today’s announcement that Sergio Perez of the BWT Racing Point Formula 1 Team produced an inconclusive test result for COVID-19 at the Silverstone Circuit ahead of the 2020 FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix, the FIA and Formula 1 can now confirm that the result of his re-test is positive,” the statement reads.

“Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities.

"With assistance of the local organiser of the British Grand Prix, local health authorities and the FIA COVID-19 delegate, a full track and trace initiative has been undertaken and all close contacts have been quarantined.

“The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula 1 have provided for swift containment of an incident that will have no wider impact on this weekend’s event.”

Perez is the first F1 driver to test positive for COVID-19, and will now miss this weekend’s British Grand Prix while he quarantines as a result of the test. Perez will also miss next weekend’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone, with UK government guidelines requiring anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 to quarantine for 10 days as of Thursday.

Racing Point issued a statement confirming that Perez is “physically well and in good spirits” despite the positive test results.

The team added: “Our intention is to race two cars on Sunday. We will communicate the next steps for our British Grand Prix weekend in due course.”

Perez was absent on Thursday at Silverstone as he self-isolated following an inconclusive test result following his routine COVID-19 screening. Tests are carried out to detect two particular COVID-19 genes and, if a patient has both, the test registers as positive.

If a patient has neither then it results in a negative diagnosis, but if just one of those genes is present in the test, it can produce an inconclusive result.

Racing Point has also moved to self-isolate a small group of team members with whom Perez recently came into contact, following the ‘bubble’ system protocols F1 has in place.

How did he get it? You'd think he'd be in quite the bubble, considering his importance to the team?

Mexico's outbreak is bad, with many infested people not even getting into the hospitals before dying at home/street.

What I'd really like to see in the race is for Hulkenberg to get his first podium finish ever.

It's a long shot, but would be very cool.

Tyre failure galore on last two laps.
Lewis on last lap but manages to hold on for win.
Bottas not so lucky. Out of the points.
Bad move by Red Bull to pit Max. Could've won the race.

The plan for next week's race is to use softer tires.

Either they'll rethink that or they'll need a two stop race.
