If Mercedes pulls out in 2021 McLaren may be the place to go.
They may get the factory engine and some Mercedes support. Just like the old days.
Maybe Lewis will go there instead of Ferrari. That's a train wreck waiting to happen.

Yeah, RIC to Ferrari doesn't seem very likely considering Charles has proven to be the next big thing. As not one of the "top dogs", Sainz is a fast, reliable and strong driver. Perhaps a tier below Ricciardo but again, with Leclerc, they won't care.

I guess it wouldn't have mattered if Vettel switched to Ferrari or not. Nothing was up for grabs in the turbo hybrid era, it's been all Merc.

Vettel out at Ferrari at end of year... Good riddance. Lewis to Ferrari would be interesting.

Looks like Riccardo to Mclaren.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/r...-seat/4791924/

Daniel Ricciardo is understood to have agreed a McLaren deal for 2021 and he is expected to be announced by the Woking outfit this week.

Ads by scrollerads.com
The Australian will replace Carlos Sainz, whose departure for Ferrari will be confirmed in parallel, as the Spaniard replaces Sebastian Vettel.

Both drivers will come to the end of their initial two-year deals at the conclusion of the 2020 season, although McLaren had an option on Sainz for a third year.

Ricciardo came close to joining McLaren when he was considering his options while still in discussion about a contract extension with Red Bull in the summer of 2018. Ultimately he decided to go to Renault instead, while in turn Sainz left the French manufacturer to join McLaren.

Ricciardo's move to McLaren - which gains Mercedes-Benz engines next year - opens up a seat at Renault alongside Esteban Ocon, who has a deal that runs to the end of 2021.

Fernando Alonso is understood to have indicated his interest in returning to the Enstone team for a third stint.

Speaking to Sky F1 last week Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul said he hoped to keep Ricciardo, but hinted that there were no guarantees.

"We like Daniel," he said. "Daniel embarked on a project, that was very clear from day one, and that project is clearly incomplete, both at a team level and I guess also at Daniel's level.

"In particular the circumstances are very strange in that the season has not even started, so we are literally just halfway into what we need to do together, and already we need to think about the future.

"I like to think we can do more together, accomplish more together, and get more results that what we've done so far. Clearly that's the intention.

"Having said that, we have a strategic plan, that plan was around substantial investment for the 2021 car. It happens that it's 2022 because the rules are delayed by a year, it doesn't mean that we are dropping the ball on what we need to do this year and next year before 2022.

"We'd like Daniel to be part of that construction but clearly we know that we need to be focussed on what's been missing so far from the team, and what's been missing is not the pace of the drivers."

Suited to Newey/Redbull cars, maybe.

He sure didn't seem to be looking forward to the season as much. Makes more sense now. Also explains last year a lot.

As much as I understand the move there's something I don't like about it. (as always)

Well this is interesting.

Mercedes and Wolf are fighting over Vettel.

https://www.essentiallysports.com/f1...-vettel-repts/

According to the latest reports, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Daimler are at crossroads over Sebastian Vettel. Allegedly, Mercedes’ parent company is in favor of signing the 4 times World Champion but Wolff isn’t on board. Keep in mind, these are rumors so treat them accordingly.

Wolff and Daimler at odds over Sebastian Vettel
While Toto Wolff hasn’t rejected the possibility of Vettel joining Mercedes, he’s hinted at the team retaining its drivers. However, the Austrian has acknowledged Vettel’s strengths and how Mercedes would benefit from Seb joining the team. Being German, Vettel would greatly help the Brackley outfit, if he joins Mercedes.

Apart from the Marketing aspect, Vettel’s experience could come in handy for the German team. Yes, some would argue that Lewis Hamilton is experienced enough but the German’s insights could help Mercedes build the ultimate machine.

Despite all the positives of Vettel signing with Mercedes, there are some very good reasons to not do the same.

All Mercedes needs to secure Championships is one strong driver and a team player who can rise to the occasion when needed. Lewis Hamilton has been the team’s star driver since the turbo-hybrid era and is showing no signs of slowing down. Mercedes can rely on the Brit to do what he does best and bring the silverware to Brackley.

With Bottas, they have a strong driver who’ll play the team game when required and support Lewis when the need arises. More importantly, Bottas’ role in helping the team secure the Constructors’ Championship isn’t insignificant by any means. As a result, Mercedes can stick to their current drivers and continue dominating the sport.

However, it appears the team’s parent company is pushing for Mercedes to sign Sebastian Vettel. According to Italian columnist Giuliano Duchessa, Toto Wolff is reluctant to break up the team’s current pairing. Allegedly, Hamilton is in favor of keeping Valtteri Bottas as his teammate.

F1 fans have been dreaming of Sebastian Vettel facing Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery. Hamilton against Vettel makes for great entertainment but also results in a giant headache for Mercedes.

The odds of Vettel joining the Silver Arrows are very slim, but could pressure from the higherups force Toto to rethink his decisions?

Maybe the end of Renault Sport.

https://www.pitpass.com/66980/End-of...ad-for-Renault.

The future of Renault's F1 team could be known as early as next week, as the French car manufacturer stares into the abyss, with finance minister, Bruno Le Maire admitting the company is in "serious financial difficulty" and could "disappear".
At a time the company is said to be considering dropping a number of its models and closing several of its factories, with talk of partner Nissan shedding up to 20,000 jobs alone, mainly in Europe, the French finance minister, Bruno Le Maire has admitted that the car manufacturer is in "serious financial difficulty".
Among the factories being considered for closure is its flagship facility at Flins, north of Paris.
"Flins must not close," Le Maire told Europe 1 radio. "This is the position of the government and the state shareholder."
The French government and Nissan are the biggest shareholders in Renault, each holding a 15% stake.
The government is currently in talks to loan the manufacturer $5.4bn, which Le Maire has yet to sign off.
"We sign when we know what Renault's strategy is," he said. "We want Renault to be more productive and to produce even more of its vehicles, particularly electric, in France."
The future of the company's F1 team has been in doubt for some time. Despite being the driving force behind the introduction of the hybrid formula, which it has never mastered, winning just 12 (9.9%) of the 121 races held since it was introduced in 2014, the team, which finished 'best of the rest' in 2018, slipped to fifth last year behind McLaren.
While Red Bull and Toro Rosso previously used its engines, both subsequently switched to Honda, and while McLaren currently uses the French power units it switches to Mercedes next season, leaving Renault only supplying its own team.
In the wake of Sebastian Vettel's split with Ferrari, clearly seeing the writing on the wall, Daniel Ricciardo, who was on a two-year contract with Renault at around £20m a year, jumped ship to McLaren, replacing Carlos Sainz who is heading to Maranello.
A proposed merger with Fiat Chrysler, which would have created the world's third biggest car manufacturer, fell through last year, while the company, which was already damaged by the Carlos Ghosn scandal, has, like most manufacturers, been hit hard by the effects on sales as a result of the ongoing pandemic.
The French manufacturer is due to reveal its cost reduction plans next Friday (29th), with all the signs being that the plug will be pulled on its F1 programme.

Guess we now know why Riccardo jump ship.

Formula E driver Daniel Abt uses professional gamer to compete for him in esports race

Formula E driver Daniel Abt was disqualified and ordered to pay £8,900 to charity for getting a professional gamer to compete under his name in an official esports race.

Organisers also took away all points won to date by the 27-year-old German in the Race at Home Challenge series.

Lorenz Horzing, who competed for Abt, finished third in Saturday's race behind Britain's Oliver Rowland and Belgian ex-F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

Abt later apologised.

"I did not take it as seriously as I should have," he said.

ABT DROPPED BY AUDI OVER IMPOSTER CONTROVERSY

Daniel Abt has been suspended by the Abt-run Audi team from all competitions for his involvement in the Formula E Championship imposter scandal last weekend.

The Race understands that he will not drive for Audi Sport again and that the term “suspension”, which is used in the official statement, is effectively part of a process in ending his association with the team due to the breakage of strict compliance criteria.

Abt was disqualified after it was proven that he instigated a scheme in which professional esports racer Lorenz Hoerzing took his place in the latest round of Formula E’s virtual series, which was held using a virtual Berlin Tempelhof circuit.

He issued a full apology on Sunday after Formula E officials confirmed via IP address details that Hoerzing was at the wheel of the No.66 Audi throughout qualifying and the race.

In the official statement released on Tuesday afternoon by Audi AG, Abt’s separation from the team was confirmed: “Daniel Abt did not drive his car in qualifying and the race at the fifth event of the Race at Home Challenge on May 23 himself, but let a professional sim racer do so.

“He directly apologised for this on the following day and accepted the disqualification.

“Integrity, transparency and consistent compliance with applicable rules are top priorities for Audi – this applies to all activities the brand is involved in without exception.

“For this reason, Audi Sport has decided to suspend Daniel Abt with immediate effect.”

The Race has learned that Abt was told of the decision earlier this morning.

The 27 year-old has been an ever-present fixture in Formula E since its inception in 2014 and won two races at Mexico City and Berlin in 2018.

His contract with the team was believed to run up to July and had been on a rolling 12 -month basis since 2018.

Abt’s dismissal means that the Audi team will have to find a replacement for when the 2019/20 series continues later this year.

It is expected, ironically, that the Tempelhof track will host a series of races to help conclude the interrupted season.

The most recent two drivers to have tested for Audi are GT3 racers Kelvin van der Linde and Mattia Drudi. The pair ran for a full day of testing at Marrakesh in March in Abt and team-mate Lucas di Grassi’s race cars.

Renault Sport survives corporate cutback

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/r...elbos/4798159/

Renault has announced that it remains committed to a future in Formula 1 despite making major cutbacks in its core business.
Like other manufacturers, the French company has been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, and it has announced that it will be cutting 15,000 jobs worldwide, including 4,600, as part of an effort to save €2bn over the next three years.

The fallout of the departure of Carlos Ghosn, followed by the ousting of his successor Thierry Bollore, created extra turmoil within the organisation.

Inevitably, that put a focus on the F1 team, which along with the rest of the company has been subject to a review over recent months.

The timing of the end of the current Concorde Agreement this year gave Renault the opportunity to reconsider its future, while the lack of any engine customers for 2021 also made it potentially easier for a withdrawal decision to be made.

However, the change to the post-2021 cost cap, formally confirmed by the FIA this week, has allowed all team owners and investors to get a much clearer idea of what they are likely to have to spend in future years, with the budget initially restricted to $145m and then dropping to $35m by 2023.

Clotilde Delbos, Renault's financial boss and currently interim chief executive, has made it clear that the changes are crucial to the company's decision.

"We have said publicly and we confirm that we remain committed to Formula 1," she said in a phone call with analysts today.

"The announcement of new regulations on spending limits is very good for us because we will have to invest less in this discipline than some of our competitors who spend a lot of money."

Renault's F1 team principal Cyril Abiteboul has made it clear that racing is a key part off the brand.

"Motorsport has a unique value and contribution into it," he told Motorsport.com recently.

"That's why we believe in it, just like we believe in a number of marketing activities, except that it's sport, except that it's been a core of technology.

"That's racing, that's emotion also, and Renault stands for emotion. So all of that means a lot. And that's why we've been in this for decades and we intend to do so for very long.

"You want to have a clear narrative as to why a consumer should be interested in your brand and your product, rather than others. And I think what you have in your DNA, in your history and your legacy counts to a certain degree much more than anything else."

I still don´t see Renault F1 racing in 2022. Because of frozen rules for 2021 Renault has now more time to find a wealthy buyer for the team.

And congrats Claire Williams, she was the last nail in the coffin.

I see the Williams 'sale' being reported in several different ways.

It seems that they're selling majority stake.

I don't see many buyers stepping up at this point. The business model is sketchy at best. I think Renault would be best to drive through the 2022 season if they want to sell, then things might be better for a new owner.

nope, you need to burn a lot of money to develop everything new for 2022. For 2021, not so much because of frozen rules.

Someone's been watching 2010 highlights.

F1 confirms first 8 races of revised 2020 calendar, starting with Austria double header

Formula 1 today confirmed the 2020 season will begin in Austria next month - and revealed details on the first eight races of a new calendar.

After racing was put on hold because of the coronavirus outbreak, F1, the teams and the FIA have been working to put together a plan to allow the season to begin safely, and today F1 chief executive Chase Carey outlined the first part of a revised calendar of races.

The season will kick off with the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on July 5, followed a week later by a second race at the same track.

The Hungarian Grand Prix will follow a week after that, before a break. Then there will be two back to back races at Silverstone, followed by the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.

The Belgian Grand Prix will follow that, with the Italian Grand Prix at Monza a week later on September 6.

All the races will be supported by Formula 2 and Formula 3.

The first 8 rounds of the 2020 calendar

Race Venue Date
Formula 1 Rolex Grosser Preis von Osterreich The Red Bull Ring, Austria July 3-5
Formula 1 Pirelli Grosser Preis der Steiermark The Red Bull Ring, Austria July 10-12
Formula 1 Aramco Magyar Nagydij The Hungaroring, Hungary July 17-19
Formula 1 Pirelli British Grand Prix Silverstone, UK July 31 - August 2
Emirates Formula 1 70th Anniversary Grand Prix Silverstone, UK August 7-9
Formula 1 Aramco Gran Premio de Espana Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain August 14-16
Formula 1 Rolex Belgian Grand Prix Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium August 28-30
Formula 1 Gran Premio Heineken d'Italia Monza, Italy September 4-6
Due to the ongoing fluidity of the COVID-19 situation internationally, F1 will be finalising the details of the wider calendar and hope to publish that in the coming weeks with an expectation of having a total of 15-18 races before completing the season in December.

F1 currently expect the opening races to be closed events but hope fans will be able to attend again when it is safe to do so.

The health and safety of all involved will continue to be priority number one, with Formula 1 and the FIA having a robust and detailed plan to ensure the races maintain the highest level of safety with strict procedures in place.

Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1, said: "In the past weeks we have been working tirelessly with all our partners, the FIA and the teams to create a revised opening 2020 calendar allowing us to restart racing in the safest possible way.

"We are pleased to be able to set out our opening eight race calendar today and look forward to publishing our full calendar in the coming weeks.

"I want to thank every promoter and partner for their support and ongoing commitment to Formula 1.

"While we currently expect the season to commence without fans at our races we hope that over the coming months the situation will allow us to welcome them back once it is safe to do, but we know the return of Formula 1 will be a welcome boost to sports fans around the world."

Better articulated:

Whatever happens, I'm fine with this season having all of the asterisks next to it forever.
