Default NA EJ Build

Looking for some advice for an engine build for my 1996 Impreza Brighton. Bear with me, I'm not very mechanically inclined, I've only been turning wrenches a few years.

Currently I have a 96 Brighton Coupe that I'm using in SCCA Rallycross (Blue Ridge Region). It has a stock 2.2 from a 98 legacy in it (with the cars factory ECU) with an 04 WRX 5 speed behind it (3.90 final drive).

I've spent the last year working on everything else on the car like suspension, brakes, skid plates and getting seat time, with the plan to focus on power later on. well now later on is fast approaching and i still have a lot of unanswered questions about older EJ builds. I'll try not to get too winded with this post, but I'd like to provide as much information possible for anyone reading to make giving advice easier.

I'd Like to stay N/A

I'm not interested in a turbo build or turbo engine swap because it just not really applicable to my level of competition currently. If i add aloot of power now it will just put me up against drivers with alot more skill and way better builds. I just want a good steady NA power band that's got more pep than a stock 2.2

I've always wanted to build some crazy Frankenstein motor with high revs and high compression, but for now something a little more tame would be better for my skill level.

Mostly I'm just wondering what 2.2/2.0/2.5 hybrid set up would be best for making around 200-220hp at the crank or if a 2.2 with better flowing intake and exhaust with 2.5 cams would just do the job. Long term I'd like to add megasquirt and corn to the mix.

I've spent months trying to research the topic and keeping hitting dead ends on forums and YouTube videos. really hopping someone here can help, I'm trying to learn everything i can about the EJ platform so i can build something strong and reliable that can take a beating all season and put a little pep in my step.
