two questions:
1. You mentioned that the driveshafts out of the 1993-2001 Imprezas were best for the swap with an r160 because of a "correct center support". Now, if you get one off of the 2002-2007 version, what do you have to do to make it work? I do not have it in front of me yet, but I thought I would get a jump on it if I need to do something tricky... 2. I have heard through the grape vine that if you are swapping a 6 speed into a female axle styled car that you can RESUSE the stubs off of the original transmission in the car. is this true, or do I need to get a stub kit to make the conversion in an 07 6 speed? Thanks in advance, and a vote for a sticky! |

PCSki- The axles won't determine the width, the lateral links will.
arco- yes Xenri- 1. they both will work in the GC/GF chassis but the newer one will sit slightly lower. 2. you cannot reuse the 5mt stubs in the 6mt's. -Dylan @ DS1 |

Dylan, I just got some parts for my swap from the dealer and I thought I'd share the part numbers incase anyone needs them. Add them to your info if you think they are helpful. All for the 2004-2007 6mt (may fit other models) Clutch fork shaft (long part the clutch fork pivots on) - 30532AA020 - ~ $30 Clutch fork shaft plug (threaded cap that holds the fork shaft in) - 30550AA000 - ~$13 Output Shaft Oil Seal (oil seal for the driveshaft interface) - 806735210 - $11.50 Clutch fork spring (spring that connects clutch fork to bell housing) - 30546AA060 - $5.20 I see you already have the axle seal part numbers, but those were ~ $10 a piece. All prices are from my local dealer and are likely more expensive than getting them on line, but no one online would help me figure out the part numbers so I thought their help was worth extra cost. |

Also, I wanted to share that while the right and left front axle oil seals look the same, they are not. They have different part numbers because of a very subtle change on the inside lip that contacts the axle. If to hold the two side by side, the little micro groves spiral clockwise on one and counter-clockwise on the other. I assume this help push back rogue oil while the axles are spinning. Don't let the dealer tell you " they're probably the same... it shouldn't matter too much" which is the answer I got. You must order one of each: 806735230 and 806735240. I forget which is which, but it was stated in the original post. |

Kpluiten, are all those random clutch fork parts necessary if you were to buy a transmission from the dealer? I got mine brand new through them, and ordered a clutchfork along with the trans (as well as a mount and shift linkage), but do I also need to order the stuff you have listed there? I wont be able to actually look and see what all I have until the crate gets here from japan...

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. I needed everything cause the box I bought used was completely stripped of everything except harness and seals. I just decided to do the seals cause they are cheap and I don't want a leak after all the work of putting it in the car from a lousy 10 dollar seal. My transmission came out of a totaled 2005 STI with <10K. |

I'm getting ready to do a JDM V8 swap into my 05 WRX. I believe I have all the parts necessary for the swap, but I still have one question...
I recently replaced the clutch/flywheel in my 5 speed with an ACT Stage 2 setup. I know the setup will work in the 6 speed, but will I get more benefit from it or running the oem STI clutch/flywheel I got with my swap? Having just spent the money on the 5MT clutch/flywheel setup I feel like I should run it... Any thoughts? |

personally, I would hate to go back to a stock set up after running a light weight flywheel and a performance material clutch. Yea the STi stuff is bigger, but I would wait on that til you kill the ACT stuff. if nothing else, you have the stockers on hand if ur clutch goes unexpectedly, then you can throw a stage two STi set up on yours. I am in the same sitution with an exedy stage 3 kit. Can make myself toss that money out when I can still use it...

Altimit_09- To determin if you have male or female axles look at the inner cup of the axle to see if it has a roll pin through it right by the side of the trans. The 3.90 ring and pinion is correct.

ok 6mt with auto axle and r160 3.9. I'm confused on the front cv shafts. Can you explain in more detail? I seem to be missing something.

why 06 sti trans? Hard to find. Was thinking of what ever I can find and swap to 3.9 r160 if needed or maybe r180 in a deal I found.
After reading more I saw the part numbers for the axle stubs. So I understand now. |

The 06'-07' boxws may be a little more than the earlier boxes but when you take into account the money for a ring and pinion and install (or your time spent installing it) the cost is usually about hte same unless you find a screaming deal on an early box.

from my experience..i would ditch the 3.90 R&P mod in the r160. i blew 2 r160 diffs before i upgraded to a a full r180 rear end. this was in my old wrx.
the whole point of upgrading to a 6mt is to have fun and not really worry about breaking any drivetrain parts besides an axle..lol. the r160 can not handle hard shifts and/or donuts/drifts. |

the 2nd one i just grenaded..i drove my wrx hard so i don't recall after how many times i launched it before it blew. i had a V9 spec-c tranny with the 35/65 torque split so the majority of the power was always sent to the rear after a hard lauch. |
