There is more going on here than just the way they drive. It's a combination of the clutch and flywheel.

There was an issue similar to this back in '02.

OEM clutches were acting exactly the same way. Don't remember the exact cause, although I "heard" it was the wrong clutch disk, but Subaru did a factory recall onthe affected cars.

Complete replacement of the clutch, pilot bearing and flywheel and the problem went away.

I recently installed an ACT 6 puck sprung race clutch and I have extreme chatter trying to slip the clutch from a stop in 1st gear. The whole car shakes violently and sounds like a jackhammer under the hood.

I have always rev matched downshifting, but a time or 2 I didn't and re-engaging the clutch makes the car buck from the harsh engagement.

Seems like this extreme chatter is normal for harsh engaging clutches.

I'm glad this mystery was solved 8 years later, thank you.

Update:

Just replaced my 6 puck sprung clutch. I was surprised it only lasted 45K miles, but speaking on the phone with one of the friendly techs at ACT, he said I got a lot more miles than most.

I bought their Prolight flywheel this time and threw in an OEM clutch.

As for the clutch chatter, after several thousand miles, the clutch chatter was less and less, unless I was slipping the clutch on a hill. Then it was very violent. But for those who have never experienced a 6 puck clutch, don't be alarmed that the whole car shakes. They aren't meant to be slipped.
