yup...

a lifted outback... just exists in a weird spot in this world, imo. The outback mostly sells to the soft-roading crowd who might need to occasionally park in a grassy field to pick pumpkins, or drive down a well graded forest road to get to a crowded trail head so they can get some pics for the 'gram. Just not the crowd that needs a lift and a skid plate...

It's cool that they're offering something more than just some slapped on cladding, but the rest of the car is pretty soft - factory lifting it just seems to be missing the mark a bit. Lipstick on a pig and all that. Would be cooler if they could create something actually rugged and off-road capable, a Subaru version of a 4 runner or something...

I agree in general but I see plenty of Jeep Trailhawks that do the same and are never dirty. It's street cred for the red tow hooks. I see more 4 Runners doing off-road things but still plenty that are mall crawlers.

I hate that cladding is coming back bigger than ever.

I don't understand why the LEGACY has cladding. It would be a nice-looking car otherwise. Just for fun I tried investigating aftermarket bumpers, but couldn't find anything. I figured one could take the Legacy bumper and place it on the Outback to lessen the cladding. Alas, 'tis but a dream.

An exercise in marketing. These things will be in the Star*****s drive thru along with all the existing ones.

yesssss

Though you do have to wonder where it all leads. Will people ever go back to driving normal trucks, or will everything eventually become bro truck?

What has happened to the grown man driving down the road in a Wrangler that can only be described as "post-apocalyptic Halloween special-ops Tonka toy"?

This is the beauty of freedom.

oh for sure. There's a market out there for people who just want the image. Maybe they bought into the advertising and thought that somehow by buying something more off-road capable that they'd suddenly be changed into something that they're not. Car commercials crack me up - buy this car and you and your family will instantly have these awesome adventures that you never did before!

It sells, so whatever, I'll still continue to chuckle. As I said, positive that it looks like they might be adding some utility to it, but I'll certainly lol when we find out that the "skid plate" is merely a silver painted piece of plastic...

I saw a bright orange 4dr RAM brodozer today, complete with bolt on paint matched orange flairs, massive black wheels with tires that simultaneously would suck off road due to no sideway, but also suck on road due to knobby tread blocks.
I also saw a blue challenger with the yellow splitter shipping guards on it.

I see way too many Joops that are lifted, wheels, knobbys, skid plates, winch, flares, etc. etc. etc. that are way to clean to have ever been taken off-road.

Over here in Mass those Jeeps are typically driven by women. I didn't notice until my buddy pointed it out, and I didn't believe him initially. But it's been a consistent observation in my 15.5 months of living here.

Which car companies are you referring to about their commercials?

It's becoming factory equipped bro trucks now. The Raptors, TRX, etc. are high performing vehicles but most don't see anything off-road to utilize their full potential. Most are too clean and are daily drivers.

Right... like this family who couldn't figure out how to provide their son with adventure, to connect with him, or be together, somehow figured out all of those things just because they bought a new car... And of course, it could only be done in a subaru.

uh huh.

Clearly this is the "marketing" part of it; but, you are CLEARLY disconnected with the "true" Subaru demographic. Did you ever get the Drive magazine? Ever read article after article after article people doing just about everything in Subaru's commercials(I haven't heard of an ACTUAL dog car wash)? They don't just pull these ideas out of their butts.

edit: And I HAVE had people tell me they bought a Subaru pretty much for the reasons in that commercial. "We're moving to the mountains and heard Subarus are good in the mountains".

Article is a little old, but I can't see much having changed.

It's all marketing, and all manufacturers are guilty of it to some level.

I think it's pretty hilarious that you think I'm "clearly" disconnected from the "true" subaru demographic. I live in subaru mecca. I own an outback and considered buying an ascent instead of the highlander I eventually purchased... This demographic you speak of, it's me. It's my neighbors. It's everyone around me. I see it on a daily basis. I see it at the crowded trailheads that we go to because of kids. I see it at the pumpkin patches because of wife. I also see it at the more remote trailheads that I venture to. I go places with our vehicles that I couldn't get to in a car because of ground clearance issues - it's the primary reason I don't own my Golf R any longer. (still waiting on that crosstrek wrx).. You might think I'm referring to people other than myself when I make these comments, but I'm not. I just have no problem making fun of myself...

But there are a lot of people that buy the car because of the image it portrays, and I think a LOT of that has to do with the marketing.

Thank goodness people buy things for image even if they don't plan to use it to its fullest extent. If not, everyone not getting their vehicle off-road, hauling stuff, or racing would be in a Camry or a minivan.

Oh. Absolutely. How else are they to get their "message" out? Carmichael Lynch just came in with a clear understanding of Subaru's customers and it has shown ever since. They were soo "dedicated" to the deal, they put a 360 in their office in Minneapolis. And the campaign Subaru has run with them since was directly related to their conversations with owners. Sooooo, could we really say it was Subaru owners doing the marketing? As I have said before, I ask every customer I deal with why they chose Subaru. Up until the past few years it was 9 times out of 10 "I've had one before" or "My friends have/had one and they LOVE it". That's why I asked whom you were referring to in case you did understand Subaru's approach. Which you explain you do. My apologies. You statements just seem soo against what is just.....truth with Subaru owners.
