Default Mega Squirt Fuel Injection System

Has anyone seen this? It looks like a really good deal. It only cost $110. What do you think?
Here is the website, lot's of technical info

Q: Does MegaSquirt control ignition?

A: No

Q: Why not?

A: Because the original goal was to develop an inexpensive fuel injection controller - something that one could you to replace a carburetor. Also, there are tons of ignition systems out there, but very few stand-alone EFI controllers, and nothing that can be put together for $150.00 like MegaSquirt.

Hello,

So... has anyone used the MegaSquirt? I want to hear more information about it. I know some of the teams are using it for the GRM $200x challenges (past and the upcoming one). It sounds pretty cool, especially for a project car. That plus a simple spark controller...

Sorry about reviving this old thread, but megasquirt can control spark, assuming you download the megasquirtnspark code to the controller and make a few adjustments.

Basically instead of using the FIdle pin to control an idle air motor, megasquirtnspark uses it as an output to an ignition control module. Another change is that the Coil signal to Megasquirt can't come off the ignition coil, but has to come off a Hall effect sensor on the distributor.

It's been done on some Volvo 740s and 240s, not to mention a bunch of other makes and models (Volvos are the ones I hear about). I haven't checked to see if people have used the setup with coilpacks rather than a separate ignition coil, but I haven't attempted to MSnS my 2.5RS (probably won't for a while).

Before I added a turbocharger and Megasquirt to my Volvo 240, I got somewhere around 22 mpg highway, and even going up hills could be a pain at 65 mph.

Now I'm running Megasquirt and 11.5 psi and I recently got 25.5 mpg on the way to an autocross, at the autocross, and part of the way home from the autocross. There's more tuning to be done, but with my cheap Thinkpad in the car I can make datalogs and tune all I want.

A $60 companion to megaquirt for ignition control.

I know Brent personally and his kit has been proven to perform well.

I stumbled across this thread. I've been running Megasquirt + Spark control for a couple years now (spark in the last 6) and I couldn't be happier. Its pretty simple but a great setup.

www.msefi.com - the MegaSquirt forums.

I have been watching the project for about 6 or so months now as I have been thinking of using it on my Corolla. I have yet to hear of anyone using one on a Subaru, though I don't see there being an issue running standalone fueling, though I'm unsure if the lack of closed loop corrections from the ECU directly would throw a CEL or not. The MS does have a closed loop mode, though, so possibly you could get it just right and not even throw a CEL.

There are PLENTY of hacks for the MS to utilize the idle output to instead control timing, most of which are using a Ford EDIS timing setup to alternate sparks for a waste spark setup. This also means adapting a 36 tooth wheel and sensor to your crank somehow, but it should be able to be done pretty easily.

Hello,

You could do that the same way Shiv did it for the TEC-II / III folks. Bolt the toothed ring to the back of the crankshaft pulley.

Yeah, exactly. I think that wheel is also a 36 toother, as well, as it's a common part.

Hello,

TEC is a 60-2 wheel... and the stock WRX uses a 30 toothed wheel. So you need to come up with your own, but these aren't hard to come by...

WRX? Who needs a MS on a WRX? Flashing the ECU in a WRX/STI gets far better response then any standalone fueling would. Especially since they only reason you'd go standalone fueling is because you want to eliminate the MAF, which you wouldn't be able to do with timing on the stock ECU.

The RS is a 6 tooth pulley. My mistake on the TEC kit... I never was a big fan of it, though. *shrug*

yeah i can't see puting this on a subaru .. maybe a formula ford or somthing really basic

but if you look at the people that have been swapping subarus motors in, like the guy that put the 1.8 into the porsche 912, they have been just using the stock ecu

the next best thing would be a link 1. link is really the only ecu that supports the old style subaru IAC and the 6 tooth wheel

Hello,

Oh, I just meant as an example. 60-2 for TEC, 30 for WRX, 6 as y'all are saying for the Impreza, etc. Not exactly standard But so many implementations out there, should be easy to do.

A couple years ago, I was close to entering a car in the GRM $200x challenge - that's where I would have used that. For a turbo Mustang.

I'm in the middle of an engine swap and mechanical resto of an old jeep. While I'm putting in a factory MPI engine, I'm thinking of converting it to MegaSquirt to get live tuning. In the past few days I've talked to several people that have used MS for their engines, including turbocharged motors, and in general, no complaints.

A lot of four wheelers are moving to MegaSquirt to convert their old carb'd V8s to TBI or (banked) MPI injection by modifying the intake manifold. For boosted engines, MS will handle up to 20psi through the MAP sensor; any higher boost requires a different MAP sensor and MegaSquirt source code changes to handle sensor outputs.

But you nailed it Jaxx -- it's a great controller for basic setups. No way would I put it on my Scooby though.

An earlier poster is a little optimistic on price. A typical setup that includes the other diagnostic tools and possibly new sensors pushes the price to $300-400.
