Default S209 Intercooler Spray System Install

So this is a separate thread detailing how to install the S209 Intercooler Spray System and Harness into a VA Chassi STi.

One of my pet projects for my Type RA-R themed build was to figure out if the S209 intercooler spray system would simply just plug and play into the existing harness of the RA. It turns out it does! Well, 95%

The S209 as a different Instrument Cluster that has the warning light for the low I/C Tank Level. This plug just wont be used. No biggie.

All of the parts for the swap can be bought directly through Subaru. If you shop around for the best prices it comes out to be around $700.

Intercooler Spray Harness: ST84981VV030
Intercooler Spray Hose (Front): ST86688VV010
Intercooler Spray Hose (Rear): ST86688VV020
Intercooler Spray Tank Assembly: ST86669VV000
Intercooler Spray Paddles: ST34329VV000
Intercooler Spray Paddle Column Trim: 34317VA010
Intercooler Spray Nozzle Kit: ST57253VV080

Here we go!

FINALLY received my S209 Intercooler Sprayer harness. This thing was a pain to source. I tried to buy this off of 10 different dealer sites back in March only to have them call me and cancel my order. They require proof of purchase of an S209 and a valid Vin#. Dealers told me they had to personally call Subaru Japan to place the order as these are made to order. Other dealers said that this wouldn't fit a "regular" STi as the car is different.

Well, I was able to get a harness through a dealer in Ohio. Super awesome to work with and their parts girl definitely did some leg work to find out what had to be done. Between that and Covid delays the harness arrived today.

Here is the harness all laid out. The left side is the front and the right are the plugs for the reservoir in the trunk. I separated the harness to make it easier to work with.

I removed the Air bag in preparation to remove the steering wheel to install the S209 paddles that are on their way. I also verified that the RA roll connector was pinned for the CVT/Intercooler Paddles which they are.

I removed the lower steering column cover to locate the plug on the back of the roll connector that the S209 Harness Tee's into.

Here is the harness installed and tucked away. The white plug at the lower left is the plug you remove. you install the S209 harness into that spot and then install the plug that you removed into the other side of the S209 harness. Tuck everything up and out of the way and reinstall the covers.

Route the harness over to the lower kick panel to prepare to route it towards the back. Note the plug in the center of this picture. This is the only plug the RA does not have. The S209 has a unique gauge cluster with a low IC Sprayer light that has a 1 wire that connect to this plug.

Next remove the B Pillar cover and locate this plug that is stuffed into the pillar. This is the power for the rear door. The S209 harness will Tee into this plug to pick up power.

Here is the S209 harness Tee'd into the RA Harness. Route the Harness up the B pillar, connect, and then push everything back into the Pillar.

Here is the end of the front section. The rear Section of the S209 Harness plugs into this plug and is routed towards the trunk

The S209 Paddles should be here next week hopefully. Once I install them and the new steering wheel surround I can verify that everything works like it should. The 209 Service manual shows you how to use a multimeter to test the circuit. Once i verify it works I will be ordering the reservoir and the plumbing

This should also work for the WRX that is a manual transmission. The CVT models all ready have the paddles, and im not sure if the wiring would be the same.

Oh very interesting. I hadn't kept up on the S209 to see that the I/C spray is activated by a "flappy paddle gearbox style" paddle.

I wonder how many of the S209 parts Subaru Japan will sell aftermarket before potentially shutting it down?

So far I have been able to source everything. I needed to provide a Vin number for certain pieces to get the dealer to approve the release of some parts. But everything is leftover S207/8 parts and RA-R part numbers.

Installed the S209 Paddles into the RA steering wheel today. Everything was plug and play.

As S209 parts are VERY hard to get through the dealer you can get what you need if you order CVT WRX paddles. The rear steering wheel cover is also a WRX part.

Removed the steering wheel and used a piece of tape to keep the clock spring in place. Also, dont forget to mark the steering column and the wheel.

Everything laid out ready for assembly.

Everything reinstalled and aligned

Ended up buying the IC Sprayer Tank from the S209 owner that has made this swap possible.

Bracket mounts from bottom through the drain holes.

Wired up and installed

Brilliant work.

Do you retain the spare in some other capacity?

Tried to place an order through a few dealers for the S209's rear cargo area foam floor support. The S209 has a unique floor support that is molded to clear the intercooler spray tank. Well, every dealer told me that STi of Japan is not approving any orders for S209 parts unless it is warranty work. Guess the window to buy certain S209 parts has closed. Bummer.

Well, I needed to do something so I could put my race tires back there. So i made some measurements and cut my RA foam floor support. I plan to get some plastic and go back and enclose those areas I cut out.

The RA comes with a spare tire delete as well as the S209. I guess if you get a flat you probably are hauling a set of race tires with you lol

Very nice. I want a similar solution for my methanol tank. Did you use any mounting brackets?

Very good and thorough writeup.

I too, was wondering about S209 parts sourcing, as I haven't had any inquiries at my dealership for that yet, but had a feeling they would be VIN locked.

Completed the S209 Intercooler System retrofit in the RA today. Still waiting on an inline check valve to make the system 100% complete.

I sourced the GR Spec C Intercooler Spray Nozzles to finish the install as S209 parts are getting harder to order directly from STi now. I then fabbed the 2 Nozzle brackets to mount the sprayers high enough to direct the spray onto the intercooler.

Overall this was a fun project that a lot of dealers said wasn't possible. Hope it makes a difference at the next track day.

Nice work with extensive research and accurate result.

as for the low water level warning on meter cluster, do you manage to trigger it? As I am using GRB, the warning lettering is on the meter, but if i add on the system, wonder how to trigger it. I saw from your diagram that there is a connection to the micro controller for the meter. thank you

Any updates? Did you ever notice any differences with the setup on track days?
