Default 2015 Subaru WRX Revealed at LAAS

2015 Subaru WRX Revealed in Los Angeles

See the exclusive gallery at subiesport.tv
Official NASIOC discussion already in progress.

On November 20th, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Subaru finally spilled the beans on its new 2015 WRX. Key words of the presentation were “power” and “handling.”

Under the sharply creased hood lies a new-to-the-WRX 268-hp 2.0-liter boxer engine with Subaru’s own direct-injection system (a similar engine made its debut in the 2014 Forester XT.) Peak power hits at 5,600 rpm, with enough torque to make even hardened tuners giggle: 258 lb.-ft across a broad 2,000 to 5,200 spectrum. MPG figures have yet to be announced, but they should improve on the outgoing model’s 21mpg combined EPA score.

Buyers will have a choice of either a six-speed manual transmission (!!) with carbon synchronizers on first and second gears for added durability, or a revised CVT that can also emulate either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed ‘box. The CVT also includes paddle-shifters, naturally. Here’s one particularly interesting side-note: only the CVT models get SI-DRIVE.

Subaru says this new model is a major step for the line, and to back that up they’ve equipped it with a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) all-wheel drive system. This uses a planetary gear-type center differential and an electronically controlled hydraulic transfer clutch to control front-and-back power distribution. Under most conditions the system is rear-bias (55%) to lend a RWD sportscar feel. Power transfers based on driving conditions and input from the steering wheel angle, yaw and lateral g-forces, much like the system currently used on the STI… although, here’s the kicker, this fancy AWD system will only be standard with the CVT transmission.

Should you select the 6-speed manual, you get the good ‘ol viscous differential with a straight-up 50:50 split. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is included, however, to assist with slippery conditions and to transfer more power to the wheels with the best traction. Still, doesn’t sound nearly as fancy as the VTD setup.

Stock tires are now 235/45 R17 94W Dunlop Sport Maxx RTs. Plus the steering has been revised and suspension tuned to potentially make this the best handling WRX, ever. We'll be driving it soon and will give a full report.

I like how they relocated the turbo to the bottom of the engine and also relocated the oil filter to the top of the motor. I don't mind the styling except for some angles of the front end. the edges are too flat but other than that I see many updates to the current generation. the aftermarket industry should be interesting...

I agree, The powerplant revisions seem pretty sweet. Not huge on the looks but it will probably grow on it.

Default No Hatch?!

I'm sure it will be beautiful, of course. And a thrill to drive. But to drop the hatch is a mistake in my opinion. I love my 2012 hatch and am surprised they're not popular enough to keep. Hey, who knows, maybe it'll help out when it comes time to sell mine.

What about an STi version? Is that coming as well?

I reserve my judgement on the 2015 for the release of the STI.

When they can release something that rivals the BRZ in style / aesthetics with a performance potential that trumps all other 'high performance sedans' in the same class... then I'll be interested in the $30k (wrx) / $40k (STI) price tag after all taxes / additions are included.

Right now? hell no. hellllll no. I'll take a 2012 STI sedan for a modest $8-10k off the original MSRP and use that moolah to put on a proper set of coilovers / performance upgrades (not that either of those are needed for street driving).

I actually like it a lot. The style has already grown on me ten fold since the leaks last week and now that the specs are actually out, I'm sure this thing will be a beast. I absolutely can't wait to drive one.

If they would have just narrowed the hood and made the fenders appear wider it would have been great. Reminds me of the crappy fender design on 08-10 models or 02-07 wagons.

It's weird they didn't keep the hatch. The 2 dealers in my area sell 60% hatch to 40% sedan. They'res hatches all over the place.

Not big on the looks like most of the users on here, but the new turbo location seems good. But looks like they put EL headers on these... Wouldn't mind testing the cars performance to see how it handles compared to prior years.

It is official: I am NEVER selling my 2006 WRX. Not if Subaru keeps up with this piss-poor styling. Subaru is supposed to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack, not conform to it! Being 100% honest, that is all I see in this car. Just another SRT4, Si, mazdaspeed, Tc, focus ST, boyracer doesn't-truly-give-a-d***-about-motorsports vehicle.

Well I'm glad you don't make the decisions for Subaru because that makes absolutely 0 sense.

Anyways, this happens every announcement; Everyone's gonna be in love with it in 1-2 years. The aftermarket is going to do amazing things.

Personally I think styling could have set it apart more. However, this forum isn't the majority of their sales so it may be that the style they chose will sell better. I'm interested to see how the FA25 fares when modded. Any update on a 20 year old motor is very exciting!

I dont think its terrible, and im sure with the 2.0L it should be a great mix of MPG and Fun. I just wonder how much torque it will make and handle when people start modding this platform?

I will say that since 07 Subaru has gone from a "Drivers car" to a "anyone can get it and have fun" car, which makes sense you need to appeal to a larger audience. I loved my 09 wrx Hatch but i will say when i switched to an 05 Evo I could tell it was a Pure drivers car. (auto x, snow, some track time in both)

With that being said i get that the WRX is made to appear to the Subaru "in crowd" who want a good daily derivable fun car that will still take them anywhere. I just hope the STI will appeal more to the actual car enthusiast like they have been for many years.
