2010 Oregon Trail Rally
2010 Oregon Trail Rally - Round 4 of The Rally America Championship Series information: www.rally-america.com Location: The Dalles & Dufur Oregon Nasioc Official Photographs: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1991569 Pacific Northwest saw the Rally America National series in the area for the 2nd time in just 3 short weeks. I went out on assignment for Nasioc to capture the action - I'm really glad I did, it was a fantastic event! MIA was superstar Travis Pastrana who had other commitments and could not make this event. On hand were many other key teams all in contention for the podium including Ken Block, Antoine L'Estage and Andrew Comrie-Picard. The battle raged for 3 days including a hands on spectator friendly show at Portland International Raceway, some twisty and very rough wooded stages in The Dalles, and then finally the dusty, silty, very fast farmland stages in Dufur Oregon. (Oh man did I get dusted out, my gear is still not clean!) Unfortunately carnage and penalties took their toll in this event. Dave Mirra (Subaru USA) rolled his car on SS6 (Fir Mountain stage) and was out of contention. Not to be outdone, Ken Block (Ford) rolled his car on SS8 in nearly the exact same spot of the repeat of Fir Mountain! (Note: I did not see either car "afterwards" but I heard from competitors that the cars were pretty torn up. Not to worry, all involved were just fine and out with the masses spectating on Sunday.) Many teams incurred penalties for speeding on transit, some of them heavy contenders, a few of them withdrew from the event after obtaining more than 17 minutes in time penalties. This is a rare thing, but as a rally driver I can tell you that a quiet zone means you "tip toe" through it. It also means chances are an official will be out there with a radar gun! The full list of time Penalties can be found here: http://rally-america.com/events/2010...lts/penalties/ At the end of the weekend we were left with 3 Mitsubishi's on the podium - 1st overall went to Andrew Comrie-Picard, 2nd William Bacon, 3rd overall Antoine L'Estage - every single one of them displaying excellent car control, and the ability to show reserve when needed to focus on the finish. This all Mitsu podium is a first for Rally America - and there's not a factory team to be found! Go privateers! Super Production battle saw Patrick Moro (05 STi) come out on top this time! Pat has been battling the Hansons (07 STi) all season long for Super Production points. Third in SP was Jimmy Keeney (07 STi). After the points were tallied up, the Hansons still have a lead and retain 1st place followed now quite closely by Moro. This be a fantastic fight for points for the remainder of the season! I have to root for Pat as he's my buddy - he drives hard/fast and clean. Go get em Pat! The AWD battle was fantastic but let's not forget the 2wd teams. Oregon Trail was the opening round of the 2010 MaxAttack. MaxAttack is a 2WD Series for any and all 2wd entries (turbo vs non turbo etc). Pacific Northwest superstar driver Cody Crane took it to the competition in this Honda CRX winning the first round of MaxAttack by persevering through a broken transmission on day 2. Yes, this means he and his crew had to swap transmissions overnight in order to compete on day 3. An amazing team effort and a fantastic display of brilliant driving. Cody was by far the fan favorite of the weekend with the crowd leaping to their feet with an absolute roar after every pass! It was quite a show. See our gallery of photos for some examples. Next round of MaxAttack is the New England Forest Rally - July 16-17 Full Results list can be found here: http://rally-america.com/events/2010/Oregon/results/ The next round of the Rally America Championship is the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania on June 4-5.

cant believe Pastrana didn't compete, unless he dominates the STPR, things won't be looking good for us loyal Subaru lovers...at least Ken Block's been eating dirt with Ford!

Pastrana was originally not scheduled to attend STPR. He accidentally double-booked this past weekend. So, he may try to make it out to Pennsylvania, but it was not originally planned.

I worked the service park at Dufur, it was going to be a tight fit if everyone showed up. The first suprise we got was that we were told USA Subaru Rally team would not be setting up since they only had one car at the event and it rolled prior to service. Ford started setting up, but soon started putting things away and they were out also. The biggest stink in service was the penalties. I'd like to look at the route book warning for Stage 11 OBS Control, look at all those who got penalties there. The service park at Dufur was unique, first one I ever worked that had a concession stand, a band on Saturday night and a lot of friendly (one not so friendly) natives. Although the spot and activities were great, there will have to be some improvements made and better guidelines and coordinations laid down.
