Default 2012, 2013, 2014 Impreza Sedan OEM Rear-view Camera

I wanted to summarize my recent upgrade of my 2013 Premium/AWP Impreza 4-dr Sedan with an OEM rear-view camera. It applies to MY 2012-2014 due to the same Rear Harness Trunk-lid Cord used in all trim levels that have a rear-view camera - 81811-FJ-050.

Motivation - after backing into my spouse's 2016 XV Crosstrek, I really appreciated the rear-view camera feature as the rear view through the back of the sedan is... awful. My sedan came with the standard low-end CM-621-UB HU, and I wanted to upgrade to the CM-631-UD HighDef FM radio anyway.

The hardest part of this was trying to find the correct Trunk Lid Cord, and by luck my first stab - the 8188-FJ-050 was correct. (I have the -020 which does not have the rear-view camera connector, the other possibility was the -030).

WARNING - Before you embark on this, thoroughly read through all of this so you know what is involved, and what wiring harnesses and cords you actually have. If you are lucky, you have have more than what I did - which is no wiring in the Instrument Panel Harness, right Rear Wiring Harness, and Trunk Lid Cord that will accommodate an OEM rear-view camera. Clearly there are easier ways to do this, such as using a 3rd party camera (like a Rydeen); I opted to use the OEM for "looks" and to be identical to the camera in the 2016 XV Crosstrek to minimize the "re-learning" when switching from one vehicle to the other.

For the most part, this is "plug-and-play" and a little soldering for the cables.

Parts List
1. Clarion CM-631-UD HD (found on-line at a parts yard for $250)
2. Subaru Rear-view Camera 86267-FJ-000 (found on-line at a parts yard for $150)
3. Subaru Trunk-Lid Cord 81811-FJ-050 (Heuberger Subaru - $65 delivered)
4. SVXdc's 8-Pin Rear Camera Harness with red 6 volt power wire ($23 + shipping at http://ae64.com/Rear-camera-8-pin.htm)
5. Shielded 2 wire audio cable (taken from a HotWires 25' microphone cable MUS HW-MC-1225 - $14 at Amazon.com)
6. Shrinkable 1/8", 1/4" and 3/8" electrical tubing ($3 - local hardware)
7. Touch-up paint

Procedure

Front/console Area Work
1. Make up your cable that runs from the HU back to the Trunk Lid Cord
a. Take the SVXdc's 8-pin harness for the HU camera connector and cut off the video cable leaving the longest possible yellow and black wires (3/4" or so).
b. Cut the red power wire to the same length as the yellow and black wires.
c. Strip off 1/4" of the insulation from all 3 wires.
d. "Tin" the stripped ends with the minimum amount of solder possible.
e. Take the 2-conductor shielded microphone cable and cut off the XLR conductors.
f. Slip 1-1/2" of 1/4" shrinkable tubing over one of the cut ends.
g. Strip off 1" of the outer insulation, taking care not cut the braid wire.
h. Strip off 1/4" of the inner conductors' insulation.
i. "Tin" the stripped ends with the minimum amount of solder possible.
j. Slip 1/2" of the 1/8" shrinkable tubing over the 8-pin connector's yellow wire, and slip all the way back to the connector.
k. Overlap the yellow and white wires and use a minimum amount of solder to join them. (These are the video image wires.)
l. Advance the shrinkable tubing over the soldered connection and shrink with a heat-gun.
m. Slip 1/2" of the 1/8" shrinkable tubing over the 8-pin connector's red wire, and slip all the way back to the connector.
n. Overlap the red wires and use a minimum amount of solder to join them. (These are the 6 volt camera power supply wires.)
o. Advance the shrinkable tubing over the soldered connection and shrink with a heat-gun.
p. Twist the braid wire into a single conductor.
q. Overlap the black wire tinned braid and use a minimum amount of solder to join them. (These are the ground and shield wires.)
r. Advance the shrinkable tubing over the soldered connection and shrink with a heat-gun.
s. Advance the 1/4" shrinkable tubing over all connection and shrink with a heat-gun.

2. Open up the console using the procedure in pages ET-7-8.

3. Disconnect the CM-621-UB HU.

4. Bring up the 8-pin connector cable behind the glove box area and bring it into the HU area.

5. Connect the CM-631-UD. (Note - this is strictly "plug-and-play" as the connectors on both HUs are identical. No rewiring is needed as the required "Reverse" signal is pre-wired. The 8-pin cable contains video image, 6 volt power and ground/shield wires that are missing in the Instrumental Panel and right Rear Wiring Harnesses).


Trunk Area Work
1. Open up the trunk lid area as shown in pages ET-39-44, and the right trunk shroud around the right trunk hinge.

2. Bring the HU cable back from front glove-box area to the trunk area following the right Rear Wiring Harness (page WI -158).

3. Examine your new Trunk Lid Cord (81811-FJ-050). You will note that there is an additional 4-pin connector on each end for you new camera compared to your old one (probably 81811-FJ-020).

2. Refer to the wiring diagrams for the Trunk Lid Cord, pages WI-123 and WI - 156-157. You will note the these diagrams are different. In all likelihood, the diagrams on WI-156-7 are "lower" trim versions that lack the rear-view camera and use Trunk Lid Cord 81811-FJ-020. The diagram on WI-123 includes the "extension cord" from connector R-356 to R-357.

3. IMPORTANT! Is very possible that the wire colors in this "extension cord" will NOT correspond to the colors of the wires of the camera "pigtail" nor those coming from the HU cable. What is important is that the colors of the wires from the HU cable, and those going to camera match. Furthermore, the ground/shield from the HU will divide when being attached to the separate camera ground and shield wires. The critical matching is done at the connection of the HU cable to the "extension cord".

4. Print out page W-123, and mark the colors of the camera pigtail on each of the "extension cord wires".

5. Disconnect all the Trunk Lid Cord connectors (license plate lights and trunk latch sensor switch).

6. Remove the trunk lid "garnish" (trim).

7. Remove the "insert" where the camera will reside.

8. Examine the "garnish" and note there is trapezoidal groove to the left of the left license plate light. This outlines a cutout from which the camera will protrude.

9. Carefully cut out the trapezoidal area with a cutting tool (moto-tool, hacksaw blade, etc.). Smooth the edges and finish with touch-up paint.

10. Insert the camera - if you install it upside-down, the "garnish" will not install properly.

11. Replace and secure the "garnish".

12. Working backwards to trunk hinge, remove the original Trunk Lid Cord. Be sure to look at the relationship of the trunk release cable to the cable as there are clips on the cord to hold the release cable in proper position.

13. Secure the new Trunk Cord in position, and reattach all connectors including the "pigtail" from camera (R-357).

14. Prepare the HU cable - choose whether you wish to solder (the soldering method follows) connections for permanence as with the front, use wire-to-wire crimp connectors, or new matching 4-pin Molex or similar connectors.
a. Cut the HU cable so you have a foot or so that is comfortable to work with.
b. Slip 1" of 1/4" and 1-1/2" of 3/8" shrinkable tubing over the cut end.
c. Strip off 1" of the outer insulation, taking care not cut the braid wire.
d. Strip off 1/4" of the inner conductors' insulation.
e. "Tin" the red and white conductors' stripped ends with the minimum amount of solder possible.
f. Divided the braid in half, twist each half, and "tin" with the minimum amount of solder possible.

15. Prepare the Trunk Lid cable.
a. Locate the camera "extension" cord R-356 connector.
b. Clip off the connector if your are not going to use it.
c. Strip off 1/4" of each wire's insulation.
d. "Tin" each wire's stripped end with the minimum amount of solder possible.

16. Connecting the HU and Trunk Lid Cable's wires.
a. Ensure the Trunk Lid Cord and Trunk Release cable are in proper position in relationship to each other, and the HU cable coming from the front
b. Slip 1/2" lengths of 1/8" shrinkable tubing over each of the 4 tinned wires.
c. Referring to your "marked-up" page, solder the braid wires to the cord wire corresponding t0 the camera's black and brown wire. (Ground and shield wires.)
d. Solder the HU cable red wire to the cord wire corresponding to the camera's red wire. (The 6 volt power wire.)
e. Solder the HU cable white wire to the cord wire corresponding to the camera's yellow wire. (The video image wire.)
f. Slip each wire's 1/8" shrinkable tubing into place and shrink with a heat-gun.
g. Slip the 1/4" shrinkable tubing into place and shrink with a heat-gun, then the 3/8" shrinkable tubing over the connection and 4 cord wires where need to neaten up the job.

17. Connect the Rear Wire Harness and Trunk Lid Connectors - R-24 and R-60

18. Carefully close the trunk lid (remember, there are loose wires!)


Testing the Installation and Closing-up
1. Test the installation by turning on the ignition.
a. Turn on the HU
b. Shift into Reverse - the camera display should be present.
c. Check to make sure the license plate lights illuminate.
d. "Pop" the trunk to make sure the latch sensor works

2. Relocate the Trunk Lid Cord into the shroud area along the HU cord (small nylon ties as needed).

3. Tack down the Trunk Cord Lid along the right trunk hinge.

4. Re-secure the right trunk shroud and trunk lid covering.

5. Reassemble the console as in WT-7-8.


Adjusting the Rear-view Camera Marker Lines
1. If the camera has been properly installed, by default, the camera display markings will be (measured perpendicularly on the ground from edge of the rear bumper):
Red - 1-1/2'
Yellow - 3'
Green - 5'
Green - 7'

2. Adjustments are required seeages ET-43-5


End Result - An OEM rear-camera with a High Def FM HU, indistinguishable from a factory install for slightly over $500 and several hours of your time.
Pulled HU and Trunk Lid Cord to EBay.

Great write-up!

A couple of suggestions:

Instead of cutting the female RCA jack off of my rear camera harness, I'd recommend soldering a male RCA plug to the HU end of your long video/power cable. Or for anyone who really wants to solder things the same way as you did, I can build a version of my harness with plain wires instead of the RCA jack.

There should be vendors selling the raw shielded microphone cable without the male & female XLR connectors. I'd expect that to be quite a bit less expensive. You could also probably find something a bit smaller diameter, which would be easier to fish throughout the car.

Default 2009 Sedan OEM Rear-view Camera

A friend recently purchased a 2009 4-Dr Sedan and wants to install an OEM camera (86267-FJ-000). Having done my own '13 (see above/below), I looked to see how that might be adapted.

Looking through the wiring diagrams, and the care itself, it appears:
1. The Audio Head Unit can be swapped out for the CM-631-UD used in '10-'15 (plug-and-play)
2. The Trunk Lid Cord (81811-FJ-050) may be plug-and-play compatible with the original 81811-FG-000, with adaptations for splicing in a two-conductor shielded cable run from the front with SVXdc's 8-Pin Rear Camera Harness with red 6 volt power wire.

The "sticking point" is that the '09 trunk lid "garnish" does not have the"slot" area that can be removed for the camera as does the '13. Therefore, I assume, this would cutting a port using a rotary cutting tool, and perhaps a bracket to hold the camera in position. I did notice that the license plate lights are farther apart in the '09 garnish that later versions, but still might be room on the left side, as in the '13.

Any thoughts on this, or might it be better to go a 3rd party camera. If so, which one?

Default Adding OEM reverse camera to MY16 Impreza base model

Hi,

I've used these forums to guide me so far, but I'm wondering what to do next.

I have a base model MY16 (2016) Impreza JDM version. It doesn't come with a camera, but there is a dealer option to have one installed. So, I was assuming it wouldn't be too hard to DIY.

So I have sourced parts from wreckers:
- part 81812FJ090 - tailgate harness with 4-pin connector for camera
- part 86267FJ500 - reversing camera

The existing rear wiring harness that goes from the rear to the instrument panel has the wires for the reversing camera already installed. I assumed that it would be pre-wired all the way to the OEM head-unit. I did a trial connection of the tailgate harness and camera, but the head unit didn't detect the camera.

The head-unit (86201FJ250 Clarion PF3677) should have the ability to display the reversing camera - when I go into the "secret settings" it lists the reversing camera as 'NG' meaning it isn't detected.

As it turns out, it looks like the wires aren't continued into the harness in the instrument panel. Using connector codes from the FSM, the wires are in the rear harness from R24 (12 pin) to R98 (24 pin), but they aren't in the instrument harness from i53 (24 pin) to i192 (28 pin connector). It was hard to tell, but the wires seemed to be in R98, but not in i53. Also, I pulled out the OEM head unit for a closer look - connector i192 is missing the camera wires on pins 11, 12, 20, 13.

So, looks like I need some way of getting the 4 wires from the front kick panel to the OEM head unit. Replacing the entire instrument harness seems beyond what the dealer would do for a standard accessory, so I'm wondering what they would have done?

Only thing I can think of is to buy a 28-pin jumper harness and run 4 new wires from the kickpanel to the OEM head unit with T-taps at both ends. Looks like AutoHarnessHouse sell the right 28-pin jumper.

Somehow I doubt that the dealer would install a standard accessory this way, so I'm wondering if there is a better way...?

A bit of an old post, but the most appropriate for my question...

I picked up a 13 2.0i sedan 6 months ago. As many are well aware, the view out the rear windshield is "lacking".

So I am wanting to do this mod. I found both the CM631-UD and the OEM 86267-FJ-000 Camera for $125 shipped to my door.

I have reached out to SVXdc to purchase his 8-pin harness with the +6V red cable. My thoughts are to just connect the shielded (microphone) cable to this 8-pin harness and then run it all the way to the camera in the trunk lid.

My question... is there any reason that I need to use the Trunk Lid Cord, or could I not just extend the Shielded (Microphone) Cable from the HU all the way to the Camera in the trunk lid?

I cannot think of a reason why this would be an issue, but wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy either.

Yes, you certainly could route it straight-through. I'm about to do this on a 2009 Impreza which was before Subaru thought about putting a B/U Camera on.

The reason for using the replacement cord was to keep it as "factory-like" as possible.

Will '10 have a harness that can be adapted for a rear view camera wiring, would rather not have to snake all the camera wires from dash to trunk
