Read the Phase Two, wiring thread. This topic is covered there. Link at the top of this thread.

Basically, the answer is "never".

Well, it's the same as watching a home decoration or landscaping show in HGTV, or watching them build something in Junkyard wars or Monster Garage: everything gets neatly buttoned up in one half hour and it all seems so easy.

Hardest part? Uh, wiring. Getting the engine to start. Making the fans fit (yeah, there was even welding involved just for the fan).

There's lots of other stuff I did that was a big project, like TIG welding up the aluminum intake, or welding up the power steering pump, that wasn't in the "hard" category, but it took a lot of time, planning, and sourcing materials. One of the big things to keep in mind is that this engine was _never_ supposed to go into this chassis or model. So unlike any JDM swap, where if you look hard enough you can probably buy the part that was supposed to work orginally, you have to build it yourself.

And my advice? That's easy: start saving your money.

This is my favorite project on this board..

I've got a question for you.. Does the H6 have an electronic throttle? If so, how did you hook it up

Uh, my favorite too.

No, cable throttle. Position sensor at throttle plate of course.

I just thought of a way for you "anders8" to make some of your money back. Produce a step by step manual on " HOW TO INSTALL A H6 3.0L IN TO A GC BODY IN LESS THAN 2 WEEK!!!"

With that said I'll expest 25% from the sales.

Let me know if you would like someone to distributing in Canada.

On a serious note... ... other than the intake and exhaust, what other welding was required?

Welding, uh, hmmm.
Aluminum TIG for the air intake snorkle, hood prop rod holder, and power steering pump low pressure inlet.

Steel TIG for a intake bracket. Power steering pump reseviour bracket. About half of the plastic braces on the radiator fan cage had to be removed and replaced with a lower profile steel band welded directly to the fan housing, then riveted back the the shroud.

I suppose I would also include all the welding involved with the battery replacement to the trunk, since there isn't room for it in the engine bay anymore. So that's an bunch more welding (steel) for the lower "tray", then a bunch more welding (aluminum) for the sweet hold down cover that protects the terminals.

Yeah, right. How about this: if anyone wants one, you can commission the manual from me.

$500 would make it worth my while.

And you couldn't even get all the parts shipped to you in two weeks, so I think I'd have to change the title.

That's pretty optimisitic, especially without knowing how much the swap cost! *grin*

Cheers,
Anders

Well how much did it cost? +/-?

I would like to try this swap someday. It seems my second head gasket has gone. I'd sure like to put my $$$ towards something positive rather than repairs!!!

I will only say, very quietly, this one time, that the amount of money required is above the range of money about which I feel comfortable discussing. This is just a personal habit of mine. Sorry jjelsma.

This is way kewl. Went back and read through all the previous threads, checked out the website, very informative. I've got an H6 in my Brat (ER27), and it's way kewl to see the newer motors put into other vehicles too, I was thinking that a Baja with an EZ30 and a dual range tranny would compliment the Brat so well (Mother and Daughter?!).
But all I ever read about is the aircraft guys grabbin up the motors and seeing them back in older cars puts a big smile on my face!

Anders, not sure if you still follow this thread, but I just wanted to say hey and see how the car is? Have you run into any obstacles since the project completion?

Also, I ran into someone who says he knows you, J. Miller? Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I have contempolated doing a similar swap, but with a new engine w/ drive-by-wire.

You are assuming that the scale for HP and TQ is the same. Looking at red and blue numbers shows that these scales are not the same.

Other questions about that graph will have to go to Subaru, as they provided the data.

Anders

Yea... I started organizing rallies instead of competing in them! *grin*

Rally people have friends all over the country.

Just make sure you do lots of research on the immobilizer system, that appears to be the main stumbling block for the newer H6 EZ30 engines. There's a thread around here about someone who's attempted it.

Cheers!

wow... this build was happening before i was even born

i recently blew the motor on my 2006 impreza 2.5i sedan and i found a cheap ez30r for sale nearby, and i found this forum and it convinced me to do the swap

its almost like all the pieces were laid out for me... i'm just worried about the wiring the most. it shouldn't be too bad
