Question Additional crank position signal for stand-alone data logging / acquisition?

I'm looking to do some stand-alone data acquisition of additional sensors that I'll add onto my turbo EJ engine (pre-CAN bus ECM).

I'd like to get thoughts/suggestions on:
  • How to get a crank position signal for the new DA unit to be able to log engine RPM. (I don't care about the actual position, only need to calculate RPM.)
  • If it is necessary to add a separate sensor, like a hall effect sensor, where would you think to mount it on a stock EJ? doesn't seem like there's a lot of room to add a second trigger wheel on the crank and the stock trigger wheel seems pretty low profile and not much distance from the crank pulley.
  • Do you think it would be possible to splice a separate wire into the existing signal wire? (do you think this would mess up the OEM signal?)

Anyone know of anyone doing something like this for Engine Management / logging?

IIRC on the GD it has a signal you can grab off of the tach signal. You should also be able to pull data off of the OBD2 port.

If it's just for an rpm reading....take it from an injector trigger, coil, cam sensor etc etc. It doesn't need to be from the crank which is more awkward with 2 wire sensors.
