Default Am I crazy to trade in my 2018 Tacoma for a WRX STI?

I don’t hate my truck, but I frequently miss shifting gears and have wanted a Subaru for the better part of 7 years.

I bought the truck because it is useful supports my hobbies and I can modify it like crazy, oh yeah and it is pretty darn reliable. However, it’s not really fun to drive daily.

Has anyone else moved from a truck to a Subaru and had any regrets?

Well.....what is it that your truck can do that is important to you? If you're hauling sheets of plywood, a Subaru can do this with a light trailer, right? If you want to offroad over boulder gardens, a Subaru can't do that without a bunch of modifications and receiving a lot of damage. A Subaru can't easily plow snow off your driveway.

I'm just citing a bunch of stuff I do with my Wrangler that I can't do with my Crosstrek. From a financial standpoint, every time you switch vehicles, you lose a bunch of money. So there's that. Your best financial move is to just keep what you've got as long as its reliable. So we'll see you again around 2034 or so, when the Toyota starts to die.

if you actually use your truck as a truck more than once in a blue moon like most truck owners, then you would probably be better served to keep the truck. however if you only haul or tow something every once in a great while, then a car that you would enjoy more would probably be the better choice. of course on could just live the dream and have 6 cars, 3 trucks, 2 boats etc.

How about keep the truck and get the STI. Then you have 'hauling' capabilities in both cars..

To answer your questions, I have yet to offroad my truck although I would like to and think it would be a good time, but having to travel almost 2-3 hours to get there isn’t always in the cards.

I do frequently go to Home Depot and wood working has become somewhat of a hobby of mine, other than that, picking up furniture, hauling my dog in the back seat and the occasional surfboard trip is about all the action the bed sees. Can this be fixed with a roof rack? Can a WRX STi haul a trailer?

I would lose about 6k on the trade which kind of sucks, but if it keeps me from constantly thinking about getting one, it would be well worth it

I suppose one can also rent HD's trucks when needed to haul planks.

I'm looking to go the other way, trading my wrx for a 2020 tacoma. I do enjoy the speed and handling of my car but the practicality of owning a truck would be much better.

Don't roll any money into the STI loan, not worth it.

For me also a big factor was where I live. In New England the winters are typically horrific. I know a Subie w/ winters is a force, but I just can't deal with knowing the millions of pounds of salt they dump on the roads is eating my frame away.

So having the taco is perfect for the winters and general hauling of stuff, and the STi is the fun whip.

Sidenote: I have learned being the only one in the family/immediate friend circle with a pickup truck is NOT a great thing

^ I agree. My area has good plowing service, but that also means they use a lot of salt and icemelt which seriously accelerates the corrosion on the subframe, knuckles, etc. etc.

When I compared the undercarriage wear, one season (4 months) of normal winter driving equals about 3-4 yrs of cars that were never driven in snow cosmetically. It's not rust to really 'worry' about, but when you're under the car and see filth it gets you thinking.

I tell ya what. I have a 2 place aluminum snowmobile trailer that I can pull with one of my Crosstreks or the Jeep. I'd challenge any pickup owner to a hauling contest. I can put as much on the trailer as you can put into any pickup and if I need a little more room, can open the hatch of the Crosstrek to put in smaller things. I'm actually thinking about when I bring scrap steel to the scrap yard for cash. I load the trailer with the bigger stuff and the boxes of small stuff go in the back of the vehicle.

Things I've put on the trailer? A stand up compressor from Lowe's. A new living room set from Jordans furniture (leather couch, leather love seat, foot stool). Now, you might be able to do all this with a pickup. Actually, I know you can. But when this hauling task is done, I unhook the trailer and drive the car like a car.

I'm arguing that most people don't need a pickup if they already have a car. But you already have a truck. The longer you keep it, the less it costs you. So again, from a financial perspective, you're better off keeping the truck.

You could certainly buy a "fun" car in addition to your truck and that costs even more than making the choice. It's something lots of enthusiasts do. I was never able to haul more than one guitar in a hard case in my Lotus. Our household currently has 5 cars in it, but it's not a Hoovies garage....2 crosstreks, a Legacy, a Fusion and my Wrangler. I've got 2 driving kids and my wife. So we've got a "spare" car which comes in handy and I'm willing to pay the money to keep it.

This is why when I had my Hellcat I bought an 05 GMC 2500 6.0 that I use to haul my utility trailer for my SxS, or the 900/month trips I make to lowes/home depot. Plus the many other home project the wifes needs me for.

Now with the Sti I still have my truck for home things. Being you said you'd be 6k in debt to trade it in that is not smart at all. STi's will be around a long time, whether new/used you'd be able to get one in a couple years when your not so upside down on your truck.

I'd keep the truck and make it your own just like modding the STi. Then when your not so upside down get an STi if you still really want one.

As some one that was in the same exact scenario. I decided that having a truck is far too valuable for me. I kept my Tacoma and bought the sti. My truck was already paid off. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of the truck.

lol, no I’ve never done the debt thing. Trade in on the truck is $6k less than a new STI. I would never be upside down on a loan trying to make this decision lol

Put a snowplow on the Tacoma and make it earn its keep. I checked and Curtis makes one for it. I've got a Curtis poly blade on my Wrangler 4 door. Body on frame vehicles need to earn their keep.

When I said 'this' it was in reference to the guys post before me, not this as in 'what I have'...and until I no longer have a choice, I will only drive manual transmissions. Also, whatevs dude

I traded a 2014 crewcab f150 ecoboost. It was an Fx4 4x4 lowered 6" on 24s. It was quick for a truck and fun to drive. I traded it for my Sti. I would do it again its well worth it, you have to live a little. I have a company truck that I can use as my own. That being said, get the Sti and a cheap truck to go to HD with.

when i moved from SoCal to Hawaii I sold my wrx for a tacoma, when I moved back to the mainland from Hawaii I traded in the Tacoma for a new STI. So far I'm loving the STI and haven't missed the truck at all. It only served it's purpose when I was more active in Hawaii.

Hmm.. Took me just two weeks to encounter my first forum A-hole! Nice move.. make a topic and flame people commenting?

Well either way if you were ever serious about your post, good luck with your decision. Just make sure they give you the vape pen with your trade.

I would ditch the Tacoma in a second for an STI. The joy of driving is worth a ton.
