Lightbulb Fix / Adjust Manual (Crank) window on 95 Impreza

I have been annoyed by the manual window mechanism on the driver's side of my 95 Impeza wagon. It never seemed to go up quite all the way and make a tight seal, and when I would crank it down, it would drop quickly the first little bit then crank down normally. If the window was open when I shut the door, it would rattle quite a bit. I finally decided to take a peek at the problem, and actually remembered to document most of the process. I will try to only post usefull pictures, and not spam with too much obvious stuff. I know that most of you probably have power windows, so this will be of limited interest, but there are probably at least a few out there that would be interested.

The first step to remove the door card is to remove the grab handle insert. It is held in by a single phillips screw:

Step Two is to remove the bezel around the door handle. The best approach is to hold the handle in the open position while squeezing the bezel as shown here:

Step Three is kind of a b!tch, removing the window crank handle. It is held on by a little retainer pin, and the best way to remove this is by fashioning a small hook, or grabbing it with some needlenose pliers. (This picture was actually with the door card off so I could show the detail better):

Now you are ready to remove the door card. There are about 7-8 fasteners around the edge of the door, just gently pull out along the edges and you should hear them pop out. Then lift the door card up, there are three clips along the top. (One is part of the door card, the others are on the door. )

Here is the back of the door card:

Here is the bare door:

What I ended up having to fix were the four screws you see in the center of the door; the ones that hold the crank mechanism in place. When I pulled the door card off, 3 of the 4 had fallen out and were just laying there. I had to cut through the plastic, retreive the screws, (magnet FTW) align the assembly and reinsert the screws. Once that was tightened down, I taped the cuts in the plastic.
The crank operation was correct now, but the window still had a little wobble.
Here are the bump stops/guides for the window, the one on the right I have adjusted, but the one on the left I have not:

At this point I was ready to put the door card back on. Align the top clips first, push it down, and then make sure all the fasteners along the edges click in.
When putting the crank handle back on, don't forget this little ring

and to put the actual hadle back on, place the retaining pin on the handle as shown,

and just press the handle onto the crank.

Then put the door handle bezel back on and screw the grab handle insert back in.

Great write up, this saved my life today, I had the same problem were the bolts that hold the crank mechanism in came out, only all the bolts fell out and its been like 20 to 40 degrees out, I couldn't find that little pin till I saw this.

wow someone actually read this! That makes my day!

The local subaru/audi/porsche dealer had some of those stools behind the parts counter for store use. I asked how I could get one, they said that they weren't available for sale, but they would have a word with the rep. They called me back a few days later and told me a price!
