![]() As far as driving, I see all kinds of South American day workers pack in a car or truck like sardines driving <40mph in the left lane all the time. High beam and horns do not work. Last edited by WRX11; 10-20-2006 at 01:56 PM. |

many asian immigrants in my parent's generation are from Taiwan and came to the US for some sort of graduate degree. at the time they came over (1977) it was very hard to come from china. so anyways, some history... there are two types of people in Taiwan, natives and those when fled there when Communism took over China. my grandparents are part of the refugees from China. at the time they fled, Taiwan was very poor, and so were they. i went to the house my father grew up in and it's literally a two room shack by the ocean. the only time other time i've seen something like that is when i went on missions to tijuana. so basically, their generation didn't have the money for dental work. my mom told me they barely had money for shoes. their families believed that a good education was the way to escape poverty, and they were right. |

![]() Where the heck did you get that notion? @_@ Maybe they will put their surname last for and as a Western convention (i.e. Romanized names), but when writing out the Kanji, the surname is first just like Chinese names.

![]() +1. this thread is here to aid in understanding. also, E-TOX brought up awareness about asians most people never hear about. there are asians in the US who are a "struggling minority" instead of the "model minority". affirmative action doesn't help them because they are "asian", but they really are at a disadvantage. which is part of the reason i'm against AA unless it's heavily revamped, but that's a whole different thread.

![]() another thing on the last names:
many, many spellings all for the same name. There were some serious communication issues when that first instance of writing down the name in english happened. The funny thing is, for some, the pronunciation evolves to match the spelling and pretty soon you have kids adding syllables to their names and stuff that doesn't even exist in their native tongue. Kids actually pronouncing thier names differently from their own parents.... or even more weird is pronouncing their names correctly when speaking their native language, but pronouncing it as spelled when speaking english...it's like having two names. |
