well my point was the OP makes it sound like there's some sort of wealthy Asian aristocracy immigrating to the US. Though I don't doubt that there are some...but an overwhleming majority of immigrants are merely here for better opportunities and weren't buying lexus's back at home.

My parents came here in the late 70's and they only had a highschool education (barely). They worked like mad and was able to put two kids through good universities, without financial aid. That's just my story and the generalizations I make are based on my Asian American classes in college and books on the subject in conjunction w/ my personal observations and not just based on just my families' experiences.

I agree. My point is the stereotype that "Asians are bad drivers." came from some first generation asian immigrants. They drive like that because of the culture they grew up in.

Is it true? Are all asians bad drivers? No, of course not. But, I can understand where the stereotype came from and how it happened.

Wait. If there is no Asian aristocracy infiltration...how else can you explain why crackers love Asian girls?

Noted. Sorry if I came off harsh. If you meant Taiwanese, then you should have stated that instead of asian.

There's lots of Koreans who come here for education as well and yes, they are from wealthy families.

The generalizations that may have had some merit in the 80's don't carry so well nowadays.

Some of us need to update our stereotypes...nothing says idiot more than using an outdated stereotype

In D.C. we have a healthy mix. On one hand with have the tired, the poor, the huddles masses yearning to open up a soup restaurant. And on the other hand we have the families of the diplomats. They all do their part to make sure the stereotypes are maintained. When it comes to driving around here, Asians really ARE the worst drivers. Not Asian-Americans, Asians. I'm sure rogue's wife could out-drive me 9 out of 10 times on pavement, dirt, or wontons.

What happened to HAC? That is a stereotype...well, maybe a misnomer.

It's not limited to D.C. Come to SF where there are hundreds of Asians who cannot drive. Imagine them all let loose on narrow and one way streets.

whoa whoa. i never mentioned anything about wealth. i only brought it up to explain how people in Taiwan can have nice cars if the driving is so crazy there.

my dad had $200 when he came to the states to pursue his PhD. my mom told me how he used to go hungry sometimes instead of asking for money from his parents.

again, the example of my mom and why my parents immigrated was a more personal thing. there are other asians like the hmong who came here because they were refugees. their life and culture is very different than what i am describing. i'm just trying to help other people understand the GENERAL asian culture in the US. i can't describe everyone and all situations. i hope people can understand that.

they're bad because they are overly cautious.

i.e. i ran inside to help pops with his luggage. moms sat curbside. cop tells her to move. result - my mom getting nervous and ending up on the turnpike when all she had to do was go around the rotunda at the airport.

lets add asian females of all ages to that list. one time i went with an asian girl friend of mine to fix her benzo. she had her check engine light on for the past month. the only thing that motivated her to go get it checked out was the fact that her radio stopped working. and at the dealership, all she told them to do was fix the radio, cuz the car is still working fine....

So all asian females of all ages should be stereotyped based on that one girl?

i'm not sure what's up with this girl, but... i had some rich asian friends in college who had benzs and bimmers. they had no idea how to maintain them. why? their families were super rich, so they never worried about that stuff. their drivers maintained the cars. all they thought was they needed to put gas in... (those friends came to the US just for college)

honestly, i hate parking there. i try to park away from everyone else. but someone always parks like an inch away from me by the time i'm done shopping.

it's a conspiracy!! the government is poorly parking Honda Odysseys all over the nation.

I'd have to agree and disagree with you about drivers in Taiwan. According to my mom (I'm Taiwanese), a lot of asians are selfish in countries in Asia. Have you ever noticed how the streets are so littered but the buildings(both residential and commercial) are very well maintained with about 3-5 LV stores per mall? Doesn't Taiwan look like a third world country until you see a hotel with about 30 MB G500s in their fleet?

The 'community service' there is just cleaning.. ONE's school, so they really are just helping themselves.

Again this is a HUGE generalization and i don't necessarily agree with it, but it does explain why asian drivers' mentality are more GTFO my way and don't care much about what or who goes on between A and B.

My mom is superb at driving and probably better than most in the US, but my dad SUCKS at driving even though he's never gotten into any accident. The reason why i don't necessarily agree with my mom's statement, is that my dad tends to get distracted while driving. ('Whoa, look at the pretty scenery!" sorta)

P.S. My uncle in Taiwan has one of the new Lexus RXs. I had no idea they cost that much.

RANT TIME!
Oh yeah IMHO, why can't people **** about asian drivers. Seriously all the asians here are decent-good drivers. It really sucks when someone at my school makes fun of my parents for sucking at driving even if they don't. Whatever, maybe because it's the adults and parents like you guys (not all of you) that condone this behaviour. But i could be wrong, maybe the asians where you guys live really do suck and drive at 5 mph. Where i live is 6.04% asian, so maybe i don't know the whole story.

See my location. It might as well be named Asia-town. I can't honestly say that Asian women are the worst drivers. However, they're definently in the top 3. I'd say most people in jacked up pickup tracks with Calvin sticker pissing on a Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Import logo are the worst as they actively tailgate and cut people off in inclement weather.

I, as an asian female, am not offended by this stereotype as I know it is true to some respect.

But, I think I know enough about cars to safely say I would never do something so...silly.
